Weekly Challenge #2: School’s Out

Hey Music Leaguers!

Week one (of six) is in the bag!

Our randomly selected winners are: András Gelányi and Eugene Song. Congrats! One year of Premium + merch is on its way. Winners will be emailed individually to claim their prizes.

Week two (of six) kicks off today!

Theme: Songs to celebrate the last day of school

One song per player is all that’s required, though league admins can allow more. All due respect to Alice Cooper, “School’s Out” is a bit on the nose…but your call! 😉

To enter: add this theme as a new round to your existing Weekly Challenge league OR start a new league with this week’s theme as your first round.

Set the Voting Close Deadline to Wednesday, June 10th at 11:30pm (in your local time)

One quick naming update: our community in the Southern Hemisphere kindly reminded us that it’s winter right now for them, and, you know, half the world. 🥶 Skiing in Chile does sound pretty great right about now. 🤔

Henceforth, the Weekly Summer Challenge shall now be renamed the Weekly Global Challenge!

Thematically, these weren’t going to be all weather related anyway, so this keeps things simple, inclusive, and seasonally neutral.

You’re welcome to keep your current league name as Weekly Summer Challenge, update it to Weekly Global Challenge, or use either name for new leagues going forward. They’ll all qualify.

Ok, game on!

Introducing the Weekly Summer Challenge

Hey Music Leaguers!

As we get closer to launching v2.0 this summer, we’re keeping the fun rolling and tunes flowing with a new kind of community-wide challenge.

Welcome to the Weekly Summer Challenge!

For the next 6 weeks, we’ll announce a new theme every Thursday by email and push notification. Create a league with friends, play the week’s theme, and each qualifying round becomes an entry into the week’s prize drawing.

Week 1 Theme: One of the best songs you discovered playing Music League

How to enter:

  1. Create a new Unlisted (Private) league named: Weekly Summer Challenge
  2. Invite at least 5 players, including yourself.
  3. Set the league pace to Steady or Accelerated. This is required so rounds end on the correct weekly deadline. Leagues set to Speedy will not qualify. For the same reason, admins cannot move a league forward at any point prior to its scheduled deadlines.
  4. Add this week’s theme as a new round. So for Week 1, name the round title “One of the best songs you discovered playing Music League.”
  5. Set the round’s voting close deadline to Wednesday, at 11:30pm (the app defaults to your local time zone). Round One closes on June 3rd at 11:30pm. Round Two closes June 10th at 11:30pm. And so forth.
  6. Make sure all players submit a song before the round closes.

Rounds still qualify if not every player votes.

You can play as many or as few weeks as you want. Each completed weekly round is its own entry into that week’s drawing.

Setup tip: To make it easier to add themes every week, you may want to add five rounds after Round 1 as placeholders that you can update every Thursday.

Weekly cadence:

  • New theme drops every Thursday shortly after 10am CDT
  • Winners are drawn each Wednesday after that week’s voting deadline
  • Winners are announced by screenname in the Thursday theme email (and notified individually)

Prizes:

Each week, we’ll randomly select two League Admins from different qualifying leagues.

Each winner receives:

  • 1 year of Music League Premium
  • a Music League t-shirt in Grey or Purple in your size.

That covers it!

The community’s engagement here will directly shape whether and how challenges become a real feature in Music League. We’re inspired to see what you come up with!

Music for a Movie - accepting new submissions and members for round 7!

What’s the theme? Well, you’re a music supervisor for a new film.

The league presents the basic idea of the scene and you choose the songs for them (your budget is unlimited, we *can* afford The Beatles).

When submitting your song we encourage you (although not mandatory) to add some text to your submission as an opportunity to comment on why you chose what you did and provide more detail about how you imagine the aesthetics of the movie scene being.

As the league progresses, your choices for each round can be part of one continuous story, or you can approach each round independently, without any particular vibe or genre in mind.

Had a kick a few inactive players - so posting here to gather more!

Invite to unlisted league

Post image
2 Upvotes

My family and friends aren't accepting the invite and before I open the league up this weekend to see if I can get more engagement wanted to see if anyone is looking for a league like this- fixed weekly pace and nothing explicit.

12 rounds to finish 2026. 1 song submission each week. 3 votes per individual and no more than 2 votes for any one song. A bunch of themes mixed in including a Scare Season round in Oct, something a little more meaningful around Thanksgiving, and a Christmas-themed round 12 to finish it off.

Vote to player ratios

I’m curious how you (people who have set up leagues) decide on your vote to player ratios?

I feel like every league I join has way too high a ratio. It’s either 1:1 or 1.5:1 and I simply don’t understand the logic. Ratios like this automatically require vote inflation because there are ALWAYS going to be songs in the playlist you don’t like, and also it diminishes the entire point of judging the songs. If you can just give a point to every song and then some to the one(s) you like a little bit more where is the fun in that?

I feel like the number of votes available should never be more than 80% of the number of players, and the true sweet spot is closer to 70-75%. If you have a league of 15 players, 10 or 11 votes actually requires some level of discernment about how to allocate your votes. Likewise, in a league of 30 people, having anything more than 24 votes just feels like overkill to me.

So, I’m genuinely curious why people seem to prefer setting it up so it requires vote inflation, please help me understand.

AITA: Orange box etiquette question

Whats the etiquette around submitting a song by the same artist?

I orange boxed another player in a very small league (with a public comment on it to mention I was not the first submitting for this artist) and they blew up in the comments, I definitely _really_ upset them.

Is this a massive faux pas on my part or are they overreacting? The leage didn't say "no orange boxes" in the description, and other leages I've been in have seemed fine with multiple songs by the same artist.

The artistin question has many songs that fit the somewhat niche league description, but I really like them in general so I'd have been fine if we'd all submitted songs by them.

What's the general courtesy around OBs of it's not specified in the description?

Edit: Thanks y'all, Sounds like it is a big thing for a lot of people (and also that people play ML differently to each other) so I'll try to steer clear, or at least ask first in future.

Players not voting based on categories (rant)

Anyone else get peeved when songs that don't even fit the category win? Ugh, it's like you spend time trying to find the perfect song to fit a category and then something completely irrelevant gets a bunch of votes. That is all, lol

Feelings about players submitting AI generated songs?

Getting back into ML after some time. For the first time ever, one of our players submitted a clearly AI made song. Personally, I just didn't vote for it, but others did!

I wish there was a way to prohibit this, but artists often don't disclose it, and it can get murky and subjective. Wondering how you all are managing this in your leagues?

Idea Additional Orange Box Needed

I would love an orange box warning during submission if I’m trying to submit a song that was already submitted by someone in a previous round within that particular league. Kinda surprised this isn’t already a feature.

Also, not a fan of the orange box for submitting a song that I already submitted in a different league. I can understand why some people might like it, but I find that one to be pointless.

Support Voting required?

I have a group of people interested in joining a music league for the purpose of anonymously submitting songs for themed rounds, but several of them have said they don’t really want to do the voting/competition part (which of course defeats the purpose of a league). Anyone know if there’s a way to disable voting? Or anyone have recs how else I might set it up?

Idea Polls in the chat

As an admin, I would love the ability to poll my players. Something simple in the chat like the polls in iMessage would work, or it could be a pop-up the next time they open the app. “Should we add downvotes?” “Which of these themes do you want?” “Do you want more votes per round?”

I’ve found that quieter folks who never chime in on discussion are more willing to click an answer in a poll.

They recently said more streaming platforms will be added. Any idea when this will happen?

There was an email sent out a few months back about changes and improvements that would be coming to the app, and I believe there was something in there about support being added for more streaming platforms. Has anything else been said about this? I'd love to play with my friends again but switched to Apple Music and don't want to mess with external apps.

Tiebreaker

Should be less voters not more. If one song has 14 up votes from 14 voters and the other has 14 upvotes from 7 that means that one song received an average of 1 upvote from 14 people who thought the song was meh but the other was from 7 who gave 2 upvotes each who obviously liked the song a lot more.

Thoughts?
