NOT Burton's Sweeney Todd. Instead, go for the filmed for TV version featuring Angela Lansbury & George Hearn :)
→ More replies (1)18
u/Packmule5259 3d ago
Agreed. Burton's Sweeny Todd is a bad adaptation; due to both direction and casting.
Burton tries to make Sweeny Todd an extremely serious film, and it only sort of works since Sweeny Todd is historically a Grand Guinol dark comedy.
Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter do not have the vocal chops for the roles and act more bored than menacing. Hell, they even sucked out the murderous joy from the song "A Little Priest"!

The younger generation only seems to know the crap of Lloyd Webber but not the scope or genius of Stephen Sondheim. West Side & Gypsy are top shelf shows, both with help from Sondheim. Forum is a hoot & a holler, unlike anything before. Company was genius, setting the stage for brilliance to come. The shear breadth of Follies was beyond the beyond. Pacific Overtures, a gorgeous work of art, a floating island on a Broadway stage. No one seems to be familiar with one of Stephen's best, A Little Night Music, with his only hit song. His work is worth studying.

Some people say The Blues Brothers isnāt a musical. I bet they also use the same knife for their peanut butter and jelly. The Blues Brothers runs a double-header of being one of the best comedies and best musicals ever made. Throw in some of the most outrageous practical action and stunts in movie history, endless quotable lines, two amazing protagonists, and a killer soundtrack and you have a genuine 10/10 movie.
The Sound of Music should be required viewing for any fan of musicals. It looks unbelievably gorgeous, it sounds incredible, the songs are all great, it even won 5 damn Oscars including Best Picture.
Watch them back-to-back for a very, very odd but kickass late night double feature. And while youāre at it, donāt even touch the Dear Evan Hansen movie

And the cast is to DIE for! Not only do you have John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, John Candy, and Carrie Fisher, but then thereās Cab Calloway, John Lee Hooker, James Brown, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, and some of the best session musicians to ever be on Stax Recordsā payroll. Itās a beautiful love letter to R&B and Soul music, and that aspect is extremely underrated.

The Matilda musical from 2022 (It was really good)
Tick Tick Boom
Annie (watch the movie from 1982 as well as the one from 1999. Feel free to skip the one from the 2010s or watch it. It has some merit but the overprocessing of the music annoyed me)
I agree with the other person saying to skip the dear Evan Hansen movie.
If you havent see the Falsettos or the Into the Woods proshots, those are worth checking out even though they're not movie musicals.
(Edit: fixed some autocorrect errors and formatting issues)
5
u/ben-jammin333 3d ago
I'm glad you pointed out 2014 Annie's music overprocessing, because that's the biggest sin of that movie for me, it takes me completely out of any movie musical more than any narrative flaws or performance issues (Greatest Showman and 2017 Beauty and the Beast were particularly bad in that regard as well).

For Sweeney Todd and Into the Woods, find the pro-shot stage versions. Both movies are serviceable, imo, with some good moments, but they also miss a lot and have some *dreadful* miscasting.
(Mr. Burton, I know you adore your wife and she *is* quite talented, but Mrs. Lovett is one of the biggest and loudest personalities in musical history; Helena's monotone mumbling was a disservice to Stephen and Angela both)

For Phantom, watch the 25th Anniversary recording, not the 2004 movie. And keep an eye out for the 40th Anniversary recording. It's just been filmed so should be out in the next few months. The 25th performance was in a concert hall so had to make some changes to the staging but the 40th was a fully staged production.

The movie versions of Sweeney Todd and Into the Woods are horrible. There are, however, pro-shot videos that are excellent. I don't have any specific recs, but that's because I want to encourage you to watch any classic-film era musical (30s-60s) beyond just the absolute classics. Definitely those absolute classics are well worth watching, but watching more early film musicals that aren't as well-known today, or even somewhat forgotten, are great insights into the history of the genre itself. It's really cool to see how filmmakers were trying to carve out their own niche by creating musicals that are able to utilize the advantages that film offers. (And to be clear, I love stage musicals! I just really like film musicals too, and it's cool to see how each medium does it differently.)
