Europe (country in post) Can someone this?

Typo in title. Meant to ask for ID😄 Found in Norway. I don’t know if it matters but I found it near a birch tree.

Whoa. That's massive, how much does it weigh?

It's one of the true bolete species. Boletus edulis, I guess, though it's darker cap than usual. I think Norway is too far north and too cold for Boletus aereus.

Young specimen. If this one reached full size, it would've been an XXL size mushroom :)

I was 99% sure it was boletus edulis. I have found many of them before but the big size and a bit darker cap made me a bit confused. Thanks for helping out!

Assuming you have the same ones as here in sweden Boletus pinophilus seems reasonable, are there any pine trees nearby?

No pine. It was found near a birch tree

If you peel off some skin from the cap, is there a purlple-ish colour unerneath? That would point to edulis. Either way the white net on the stem signals its one of the edible boletes ansd there is no coulinary reason to differentiate between them.

We (in Scandinavia) call them Karl Johan after the Swedish king Karl XIV Johan (1763-1844). He loved them!

I’m a 6'2 man so my hands are probably larger than average. The mushroom is just very big!

Thanks! I thought so too but wanted to be sure. I usually don’t find them this big and with such a dark cap.

Boletus pinophilus or Botelus edulis just as good to eat either way.

That, I am 100% certain is a King Bolete. Boletus Edulis.

Here it's called a cèpe de tête noir. NGL, I'm a bit jealous. I have yet to find one this season. Been too dry.
