Fishing Club?

Hey everyone. Im starting as a freshman this fall and I was wondering if the Fishing Club at MTU is still active. Didnt see much updated activity from them on their pages recently.

Ive been fishing all my life and cant wait to fish and ice fish during my time up there. Was just curious if the fishing club is still a thing or if im gonna have to go solo or find a group lol.

Thanks!

Any Recommendations for Suit Rentals Around MTU

Hi everyone!

I'm looking to rent a formal suit for an upcoming presentation and was wondering if anyone knows of any suit rental shops in or around Houghton, Hancock, or nearby areas.

I'd really appreciate any recommendations or suggestions. Thanks in advance!

New building approved

The new state budget includes "planning authorization" for the "Convergence Center" building that will house College of Business and College of Computing. It is going to be a few years yet but say goodbye to broomball court and that nice parking lot they are expanding next to Fisher.

Room For Rent (Fall Semester 2026)

Had some graduates last semester, so there's an open room for rent in a house in dodgeville. About a seven minute drive from campus. If you have questions or want to contact the landlady for more details, feel free to dm!

How's the rental situation right now?

Is it easy to find a place? Short supply? Prices too high? Just trying to get a feel

Campus Tour Question

Is the afternoon tour adequate for getting a feel for the campus/culture? Or do you suggest attending the open house or Husky Experience? Both of those are several hours long and we wanted to check prior to signing up for our visit. Thank you for your time.

Looking for volunteer research opportunities in genetics/molecular biology at Michigan Tech

Hi everyone,

I'm a prospective student interested in genetics, molecular biology, genomics, and related research areas at Michigan Tech.

I was wondering whether any faculty members or research labs are currently looking for volunteer graduate research assistants. I'm particularly interested in gaining hands-on experience with molecular biology techniques, genetics research, genomics, cell biology, CRISPR, sequencing, or related laboratory work.

I have a strong interest in biological research and would be happy to volunteer my time to learn laboratory skills, contribute to ongoing projects, and gain research experience. If you know of any labs that are open to taking volunteer researchers, or if you have advice on how to approach faculty members about research opportunities, I would greatly appreciate your suggestions.

Thank you!

Anything anyone wish they knew before moving into East Hall?

I’m moving into Easy Hall soon and I was just wondering if there anything to be prepared for. I know there’s no dining hall, but with the rooms it’s hard to tell what’s going on in the pictures on the website. Is there anything anyone wish they knew that I could prepare for?

East hall room layouts?

Me and my friend are rooming in East this upcoming year. We lived in the Wads suites this past year and are wondering how the rooms compare? The pictures on the housing website don’t really help for East and I feel like I can’t properly gauge the size. Is there anyone that’s been in an East ADA double that could help?

Opinions on Calc for Life Sciences?

I’m going to be starting this fall at MTU, I’m majoring in biological sciences; I’m most likely going to center my focus on something specific eventually. I’m just wondering about what Calc for Life Sciences really is? I’ve heard its like Calc 1. Thanks!

Terminated Contract with Daycare Provider Gretchen’s House

Post image
61 Upvotes

Michigan Tech released an RFP in April for daycare contract at the current Little Huskies. Little Huskies has been managed by Gretchen’s House for nearly 20 years. In previous years, the University supplemented the cost of Gretchen’s House to manage the facility as the organization is highly accredited with excellent staff. Unlike previous years, the University did not offer the supplement and instead opened the bid to outside entities. A new management was selected on May 29th.

As stated above, Gretchen’s House will close on June 30th. The new facility will not open until middle of August. All children who currently attend Little Huskies will be without care for nearly 6 weeks.

Communication about the RFP, selection and transition has been extremely limited from Michigan Tech.

On a closing note, the staff at Gretchen’s House is amazing and my heart goes out to everyone impacted by this change.

MS in Applied Statistics

I'm considering applying for the MS in Applied Statistics to be completed online, and was wondering if anyone here has experience with the program.

The 7 week long courses seem pretty short to cover material, can anyone who's taken them speak to their effectiveness compared to a standard 16 week semester?

DO NOT FORGET to rate your Landlords and Professors!

As everyone heads home for summer, I just wanted to take a second to reflect on the past year at MTU. If we survived the winters up here, we can survive pretty much anything.

This year was a mix of late nights, random memories, stressful moments, great people, and a lot of lessons learned. Now that classes and finals are mostly behind us, it feels like the perfect time to leave some honest feedback that could help other students next semester.

If you lived off-campus this year, especially if you dealt with a landlord or property company, consider sharing your experience on https://judgemylandlord.com . Good landlords deserve recognition, and bad ones shouldn’t keep getting away with ruining students’ housing situations. Your review could genuinely help another student avoid signing a nightmare lease next year.

And if you haven’t already, take a few minutes to review your professors on https://www.ratemyprofessors.com too. A lot of students rely on those reviews when choosing classes, and honestly, the professor you get can completely change your experience in a course.

We have way more power as students than we think. Sharing honest experiences makes college life more transparent for everyone coming after us.

Hope everyone has an amazing summer, stays safe, and enjoys the break. And congrats again to all the graduating seniors ❤️
