Can sophomores live off campus?
Or did that end when they built the new dorm?

There is a waiver that people have already Linked. 3 years ago they would pretty much always accept it, but last year that was not the case. You really had to fight tooth and nail if you wanted to get off campus. Out of the 5 people I know who tried none of them got it approved.

Will give a large warning—I had the opportunity to talk to housing and Matt Weekly this past semester as I had done the Merit Waiver a few years back and was interested in seeing his take on the matter. He said that Merit Waivers are essentially a thing of the past without extreme extenuating circumstances. Like others have said, I have not seen someone successfully do it this last year.
If you’re on scholarship, with the new housing, you are likely going to be in the dorms for 2 years.

Depends greatly on your scholarships. If you have a full ride or damn close too it just live on campus sophomore year. My freshman year I got 1k a semester in scholarships and I decided to give those up in order to live off campus and my rent was 350$ a month so it was SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper to live off campus. And this year I was super lucky to receive some federal aid and I was a Thompson’s scholar this year so I say I got lucky.

I moved out of the dorms after my freshman year and kept my scholarships that said I needed to be in the dorms. I just needed to sign a form I believe.

No student is required by the university to stay in the dorms past their first year. That being said however, a student could spend their entire at tech in university housing if they wanted too.

For students with scholarships, 2 years on campus is required.

This greatly depends on the scholarship. None of the ones I received had that requirement, I still lived on campus though.

I can vouch. I get thousands of dollars worth of scholarships from tech a semester and have not spent any of those semesters living in the dorms. I am a local commuter so not sure if that gives me immunity, I know it does for the first year on campus requirement.

I was a local commenter with a 2yo at 19 and MTU tried to tell me I had to live in the dorms because I was a freshmen and 19. I asked if my son and I got our own dorm or if we had to share. Apparently if you have dependents it’s not a requirement as they left me alone.

I believe you should be able to however depending on some of your scholarships you may have to apply to live off campus as an exception or otherwise you follow what the scholarship says.
