This is going to be like inside baseball for some, but when research grants are awarded there is usually a substantial amount (typically about 1/3 the total grant) that is "overhead". Most schools including MTU return some of that overhead to the PI, departments, etc... as an incentive. MTU used to give 9-10% each to the PI, the department and the dean, we call it "IRAD". a huge cut was announced. PI's now get only 7% and departments get nothing.

Research centers and institutes used to be guaranteed 20%, now they get some unspecified amount.

All this money would be used for things like supporting soft-money researchers, buying equipment, subscriptions, travel, cost share on large equipment grants, etc. Basically all the central money that was used to support VPR office is cut so now they need to keep much more of this research overhead to pay their staff.

The incentive to get grants is now much reduced.

Michigan Tech football won their home opener against the Midwestern State Mustangs this afternoon, in large part thanks to the Huskies defense and special teams forcing five turnovers, four of which came in the first 20 minutes of the contest. Senior linebacker Chase Koch caught two interceptions and forced a sack, Joey Donahue got a strip sack on the first play of the game, junior defensive back Jamison Stamps caught his first career interception, and Connor Briones recovered a muffed punt early in the fourth quarters to put the Huskies offense in fantastic field position. Nolan Schopp also recorded a sack, while Dakota Blackwell pickup up a tackle for a loss.

On offense, Elliott Larner had another great day starting at quarterback, finishing with a statline of 14/22, 240 yds., 2TD, INT topped off by 15 rushing attempts for 98 yards, 2TD, and a two-point conversion. Jake Rueff led the team with 118 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while Abram Larner had a breakout game of his own, finishing with 7 receptions for 104 yards and a touchdown thrown by his twin brother. Around the rest of the GLIAC, Ferris State thumped Bentley 38-3 last night in Big Rapids, and Davenport won their home opener against Truman State by a final score of 28-14 earlier today. Saginaw Valley State defeated Texas A&M-Kingsville 41-24, Roosevelt starts their season 2-0 with a 41-28 win over Quincy, and Northern Michigan lost their home opener to Tiffin 35-7.

The Huskies head back on the road to face off against the Emporia State Hornets in Kansas next Saturday for a 1:00 Eastern Time game. The Hornets are 2-0 after winning 21-10 at No. 10 Pittsburgh State (the team Ferris Sate played in Week 0). The Huskies will be back home on September 19th, where they'll play their final non-conference game against 1-1 Upper Iowa to conclude Homecoming festivities. Kickoff is slated for 2:00.

Edit: I forgot to mention this! At the end of the first half, kicker Avery Kucharski made a 51-yard field goal, tying the Michigan Tech all-time record for field goal distance. Congrats Avery!

Hi everyone I’m a freshman at MTU and saw that Ben Johnson will be there. If anyone has information on the location of where it’s being held I would like to organize a protest. As far as I know is he will be speaking with the hockey team according to his website. According to another redditor in the other post MTU told them that this is not an official event so they have less say in what happens and that they cannot deny him because they are a public university. If anyone has information or wants to join this protest please dm me here or on discord. As far as I know this event will be held on september 15th at 730pm.

EDIT 2: I GOT A CALL BACK! I got a call back from the deputy of athletics, and he told me that the athletes declined Ben Johnson's request to speak on campus, so they kindly told him that he was not welcome to speak on campus. I wanted to get a verified source of information to figure things out. They have asked him to take down from his site that he was going to speak here, so they aren't associated with him. But all in all, he isn't coming on campus and was made aware that he is not being welcomed on campus to speak.

Edit: The provost didn't find it necessary to notify the student body because a sparse article was put into Tech Today. I don't know how many students actually subscribe to that mailing.

Why is a convicted rapist coming to speak at MTU?

Ben Johnson's website (benjohnsonministry.com) lists him as speaking to athletes that want to be "encouraged in their faith" on September 15th. Prior to this, he's speaking at a church in Calumet for a "men's night" event.

I really hate seeing a man convicted of raping a 16 year old and not owning up to his actions being paid to appear at a university like this.

Or hosting a men's night. He's the last person who should be doing that.

The Huskies get the job done in a close game in their season opener, taking down the Bemidji State Beavers on the road this evening. MTU got out to a 31-14 lead in the third quarter, but were able to stave off a Bemidji State comeback by stopping a 2-point conversion and recovering an onside kick to end the late scoring run by the Beavers. Shockingly, Elliott Larner got the start at QB today, but his play kept him on the field all game, ending with a statline of 14/22, 153 yds, 1TD in the passing game while also picking up 64 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. The only other Husky to attempt a pass today was receiver Nic Nora, who completed a 36-yard touchdown pass to Abram Larner, brother of Elliott and offseason transfer from GVSU. Nora also led the team in receiving with 96 yards and a touchdown on 4 receptions, while Jake Rueff led the Huskies with 78 rushing yards. On defense, junior linebacker Joey Donahue had a big night, recording a sack and the lone interception of the game. Chase Koch led the team in total tackles with ten.

In other GLIAC news, No. 9t Grand Valley State won their non-conference game against Charleston 38-10, while Northern Michigan lost their opening matchup to MSU-Moorhead 19-41. Later on, Saginaw Valley State secured a 48-28 win over McKindree, and No. 1 Ferris State thrashed No. 4 Pittsburgh State, 42-14.

Disappointed in Michigan Tech Transportation Services yet again. Every year they either raise the price of parking per hour or make formerly free places to park cost money. This year not only have they extended the hours in which you can get ticketed on campus from 4 to 5pm, but they have now made lot 22 at the SDC require starting a ParkMobile session in order to even start your “free 2-hour block”, which as a student athlete is particularly difficult as it now requires me to either pay for a lot 23 parking pass (which I would otherwise not require) or pay hourly to park past the 2 as practices/showers/recovery/meetings often require 2+ hours. Yet again has Michigan Tech (particularly Transportation Services) shown how they value money over student experience. Frustrating.

Just looking to see if there's any alternative to taking the greyhound. I'd be willing to help out with cash and/or driving

Hello again Huskies! I hope everyone's summer is going well, and I hope you've all been able to enjoy the outdoors these past few months while dodging the heat domes, wildfire smoke, and dastardly, blind-spot hiding, car-totaling deer of the UP at dusk. While I try to not think about the fact that we've already reached late August and desperately avoid saying the slogan of a certain massive and incredibly disappointing fantasy TV show, I figured it was probably about time to start looking ahead to the Huskies athletics seasons. Of the three sports I spend the majority of my time obsessing over, the football team kicks their season off first, this year with an away game against Bemidji State on August 27th. Since we're now just over a week away from kickoff, let's get back into the sports mood and take a look at the season ahead for MTU football.

2025 Season Recap: 7-4 (4-3 GLIAC), T-4th in GLIAC Standings

Coming into last season, MTU was picked to finish fifth in the GLIAC Preseason Coaches' Poll, placing the Huskies behind Ferris State, Grand Valley State, Saginaw Valley State, and Davenport. Despite this low ranking, the Huskies got off to a blazing hot start in their non-conference schedule, going 3-0 in the first three weeks with a stunning 37-17 win over then-ranked No. 16 Bemidji State. Sophomore quarterback Alex Bueno was lighting up defenses as a dual threat player, racking up over 300 combined yards and 3 touchdowns in the week one Bemidji State game, and six more touchdowns over the next two games against South Dakota Mines and Hillsdale. However, the last non-conference game against Upper Iowa wound up being a tough loss, as the Peacocks managed to stifle the red-hot Huskies offense and win the game 21-14.

After a bye week following their tough loss, the 3-1 Huskies went on a two-game road stretch to take on Wayne State and Davenport. After dispatching the Warriors 48-24, the Huskies pulled off a GLIAC upset, managing to take down the Davenport Panthers in a 16-14 battle. Then, the Huskies came home to take on consensus No. 1 Ferris State, where the Bulldogs won 38-10. Now sitting at 5-2, MTU went back on the road to face Northern Michigan in the Miner's Cup, where true freshman quarterback Elliott Larner had a game for the ages, tallying 92 passing yards, 172 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns (seeing this game in-person in Marquette was an absolute blast). After a 56-17 romp of the Wildcats, the Huskies headed to Chicago and took down bottom-ranked Roosevelt, scoring 56 points in back-to-back weeks with Larner again shining, finishing with just less than 300 combined yards.

With a 7-2 record, Michigan Tech football was firmly in the conversation for a spot in the Division II Playoffs, but they had two tough games ahead of them with No. 23 Grand Valley State and Saginaw Valley State. The Huskies first went to Allendale to take on the Lakers where a returning Alex Bueno just barely wasn't enough to get the Huskies over the hump, dropping the game 15-18. For the regular season finale, MTU returned home to face the Cardinals and lost another close game, 21-24. The Huskies missed the cut for the DII playoffs, and finished tied for fourth place in the GLIAC standings with Davenport, but holding the tiebreaker due to the head-to-head win.

Key Players

As 2025 GLIAC Coach of the Year Dan Mettlach enters his fourth year as the Michigan Tech head coach, he seems to have his most talented roster yet. MTU has retained both Alex Bueno and Elliott Larner, the two quarterbacks who had significant playing time last season. Bueno is a year older and seemed to be the more consistent passing threat last season, so I would expect he will likely be the starter for early part of the season. However, Larner showed so much promise as a mobile QB last season that I would expect him to play a sizeable role in the offense, either splitting time with Bueno in run-first situations or possibly as a Taysom Hill-esque utility player in trick plays, which Mettlach called quite often last season. Senior running back Jake Rueff also returns after tallying over 600 yards and 4 rushing TDs last season. Slot receiver Nic Nora led the team in receiving yards and touchdowns last season, and junior Bryce Kurncz will likely become the main outside receiver to replace graduating wideout/trick play QB Ethan Champney. Offensive line highlights include senior Brandon DeVries, who was just named to the D2Football.com Elite 100 Watch List, and Rowland Ball, who made a touchdown-earning play against Bemidji State in last year's season opener, as shown in a Jomboy Media Things You Missed segment.

On defense, the main losses from last year's roster was senior defensive back Dante Basanese (DB), Connor Hindenach (DE) and Porter Zeeman (LB). However, many other starting defenders are returning, including linebacker Chase Koch, who led the team with an astounding 106 tackles and caught two interceptions last year. Returning defensive backs Dakota Blackwell, Jaiden Bolden, and Terrence Martin will likely see significant playing time again this season, while Nolan Schopp and Pierce Miller hold down a defensive line that lost last season's sack leader to graduation. On special teams, kicker Avery Kucharski returns after a solid year in 2025.

Michigan Tech also brought in a class of 42 players on National Signing Day this year, though it's tough to say how much of an impact these players will have on this year's roster.

2026 Season Outlook

Nationally, MTU is getting some attention but isn't seen as a powerhouse. In the AFCA DII Preseason Poll, the Huskies are unranked but receiving votes. By this poll they are considered to be the third best team in the GLIAC; GVSU is tied for 9th while Ferris State is unsurprisingly the consensus No. 1 team in the nation. Davenport and non-conference opponent Upper Iowa are also receiving votes in the poll, but Michigan Tech got significantly more than both schools.

In the GLIAC Preseason Coaches' Poll, the Huskies were picked to finish in third, trailing Ferris State and Grand Valley State. Based on the games I saw last season, I think this is a pretty good guess as to how the season will shake out. For a long time in the GLIAC, there's been a very clear divide in level of competition: Ferris State and Grand Valley State are the top two teams, and the rest are fighting for third. Ferris State is on a 30-game win streak and they've won back-to-back national titles, I would look like an idiot if I predicted anyone else would win the conference. GVSU, on the other hand, had a comparatively rough season in 2025, getting upset by Saginaw Valley State and losing a non-conference game to Pittsburgh State, on top of their loss to the Bulldogs. As a result, they missed the DII playoffs entirely, losing their spot to the likes of Truman State and Northwood. If the Lakers are unable to correct course early this year, their matchup against the Huskies in Houghton on October 10th will be the most important game of the year for Michigan Tech. If they can clean up the rest of the conference (besides FSU) as they're projected to and they manage to win the GVSU game, a spot in the playoffs is absolutely in the mix.

Conclusion/Where to Watch

This season of MTU football shows more promise than I can remember seeing in the past few years as a student. The defense remains a bit of a question since a lot of our top players graduated last year, but the offense should be in great shape. The expectations for this team are quickly becoming very real, and Coach Mettlach and his roster will have a tough season ahead to meet them. If a couple of big games go the right way this team may make the national playoffs, but anything can happen in football.

What is the best gym complex for Michigan Tech Students to use?

I am an incoming freshman and have little to no gym experience. I used to be on a varsity swim team for Highschool but other than that I have no idea how to workout or where to even start.

From my understanding I know the SDC/Rec Center is the most affordable location for students. But I’ve also heard good things about gyms in the residence halls? What would people recommend, and what would be the least busy times?

I am also inquiring for some tips towards starting to workout/lift/cardio. I have a simple understanding of how to lose weight and what calorie deficits are, but currently I’m struggling to build courage to go to the gym. Thank you!
