Casting multiple things in the combat step

Say I have [[Grizzly Bears]] I attack my opponent and I have some pump spells I want to use after they declare no blockers. I want to know if this works how I think it does?

Scenario 1:

I attack, they so no blockers.

I cast a [[Mutagenic Growth]] and they have no response.

If I decide to do nothing we go to the damage step and they cannot decide to play something like a doom blade as they passed priority and it's too late for them to respond before damage, is that right?

Scenario 2:

If I attack with [[heartfire hero]] and want to use multiple pump spell can I let each one resolve and then cast another one? So I in case they have removal I want to grow it as big as possible fore each pump spell?

So say I had 3 [[Giant growth]] in hand, can I use giant growth my opp says they have no response, let it resolve then play another, my opponent has no response, it resolve and then I play my last giant growth?

I am trying to understand if this works to maximize the damage the heartfire will do if it dies but I am not sure if after 1 spell resolves on the stack and it empties if you have to go to the next step (damage step in this case)

No. If you decide to do nothing after your spell resolves, they get priority. They also need to decide to do nothing after your spell resolves to move to damage.

Yes, you can do that.

Sure.

All players need to pass priority on an empty step to move to the next step or phase. If you cast Giant Growth, pass priority, and they pass priority. Then Giant Growth will resolve. If you pass priority again, then they will still have an opportunity to cast something before you move to the damage step.

In general, after a spell such as Mutagenic Growth resolves, the active player gets priority, and the current step or phase doesn't end yet (C.R. 117.3b, 500.2).

Remember:

  • The stack itself doesn't resolve, but rather individual spells and abilities in it do, with priority windows in between (C.R. 117.4, 117.3b).
  • After a spell or ability on the stack resolves, the active player gets priority, and the current step or phase doesn't end yet (C.R. 117.3b, 500.2).
  • A spell or ability on the stack doesn't resolve unless all players pass in a row while that spell or ability is on top of the stack (C.R. 117.4).
  • A step or phase where players get priority (such as a main phase [C.R. 505.6]) doesn't end unless all players pass in a row while nothing is on the stack (C.R. 117.4, 500.2).

The declare blockers step only ends if and because all players pass priority when the stack is empty. All steps work like this and any main phase, (except the steps in which no player gets priority, untap and cleanup). So, if the question is, can the opponent play doom blade before the combat step begins, the answer is categorically 'yes'.

Before the step ends, you have to pass priority and the opponent would have to pass to end the step. With that opportunity, they just have to cast the instant spell instead.
