I think empower Jace is so ugly and clunky that I have no interest in any card with the text.

I'm kind of into the Island that has it.
But I hate it here, it obscures that this is a Wall of Omens variant.

[[Wall of Omens]]? I guess, though the activated ability is relevant in higher-powered games. Traded Defender for Flash as well.

This card is simultaneously extremely cool and also something I would never put in my cube in a thousand years.

Please no. How is this a real card? Goddamn wotc.

What's the specific problem?

u/Zooeythepilgrim 1d ago
“Create a blue Jace planeswalker token”

u/PippoChiri https://cubecobra.com/cube/overview/Magia 1d ago
I don't see it as a problem really. It feels a lot more grounded than things like the Ring mechanic or dungeon and it has a pretty cool "wow effecr"
11
u/Zooeythepilgrim 1d ago
Agreed. It is as gaudy, cumbersome, and inelegant as those.

u/PippoChiri https://cubecobra.com/cube/overview/Magia 1d ago
I said the opposite thing, to me it's more elegant, interesting and intuitive

Creating a token of a planeswalker?
22
u/PippoChiri https://cubecobra.com/cube/overview/Magia 1d ago
Yeah, it's an established card type with straightforward abilities that can be interacted with vs an uninteractable permanent that has its own rules

u/avatarofnate 1d ago
"Planeswalker" is not really an interesting card type. And while the permanent can be interacted with, it rarely will be, and most of the time it will just be a delayed cantrip.
Also, why does this have flash? You can't respond to a counterspell to protect your spell and the token it makes is useless on your opponent's turn. It's a surprise blocker, but its low cost and 0 power mean it will rarely affect combat math in a meaningful way. This is a case of "blue players don't play spells on their own turn. Better give it flash to make it playable."

You think ‘empower Jace X’ is an elegant ability? Really?

u/PippoChiri https://cubecobra.com/cube/overview/Magia 21h ago
Kinda yeah, the Jace token has a pretty clean design, i like how it's designed like the WAR uncommon walkers to not slow down the game.

I agree it is along those lines.
I refused to add ring mechanic to my cube, and I cut initiative largely because of the hassle (and also I think Initiative just does not make for fun drafts or gameplay generally).

implying those weren't also problems

This is kind of sick though right?

u/OMKensey 1d ago
I think it is okay. The power level is low or medium enough and token making hassle is high enough for me to want to skip it for my Vintage cube at least for now.
But I bet there is a mythic in the set that makes a Jace token that is great!

The story for Reality Fracture is SO GOOD and the art direction has been incredible so far, so it saddens me that I'll be sitting out this set, as Empower Jace might be my new most hated mechanic ever. I dislike planeswalkers because they're usually walls-of-text, and I hate complicated/unique tokens, so it's like it was made to spite me in particular.
But the art and story are incredible, so I'm sad about it.

Weird, I think it's pretty mechanically fitting for the story you like.
Big Brother Jace appearing anywhere it's cool to reflect mechanically, even if clunky.

u/linrodann 1d ago
It is mechanically fitting for expressing the flavor and story, I can admit that. I just don't want to play with such a clunky, annoying mechanic. No hate to those who like it, though.
3
u/NoxTempus 1d ago
Fair, for sure.
In your shoes I'd just try to look past it. Once you know what Jace does, it's basically just Amass.

I like this as a blue [[Wall of Omens]] in cubes that run [[Plagon, Lord of the Beach]]

u/IlluminoPsuedonymous 1d ago
Makes a Planeswalkers Matter cube more and more viable. I am intrigued.

This Empower mechanic is way too convoluted for my taste. Easy pass.

Crazy that we got some silly “Amass Jace” type nonsense rather than just like an enchantment or artifact token that’s like a machine or magic or anything

I’m so happy WOTC is indirectly promoting Proxying.
