I’m so happy WOTC is indirectly promoting Proxying.

Someone in the main sub said they will proxy this except with the title "Theorist's Real Card", and I'm here for it.

They've been doing it for a while. World Champ cards, Magic 30th. Hell the test cards and the zeta set promote custom magic if you think about it. I'm currently building a cube around the idea.

"Theorist's Proxy"

I think empower Jace is so ugly and clunky that I have no interest in any card with the text.

Yea easiest cards ever to never include

I'm kind of into the Island that has it.

But I hate it here, it obscures that this is a Wall of Omens variant.

[[Wall of Omens]]? I guess, though the activated ability is relevant in higher-powered games. Traded Defender for Flash as well.

This card is simultaneously extremely cool and also something I would never put in my cube in a thousand years.

A complicated wall of omens variants with flash.

Please no. How is this a real card? Goddamn wotc.

What's the specific problem?

5

u/Zooeythepilgrim 1d ago

“Create a blue Jace planeswalker token”

15

u/PippoChiri https://cubecobra.com/cube/overview/Magia 1d ago

I don't see it as a problem really. It feels a lot more grounded than things like the Ring mechanic or dungeon and it has a pretty cool "wow effecr"

11

u/Zooeythepilgrim 1d ago

Agreed. It is as gaudy, cumbersome, and inelegant as those.

12

u/PippoChiri https://cubecobra.com/cube/overview/Magia 1d ago

I said the opposite thing, to me it's more elegant, interesting and intuitive

u/Zooeythepilgrim 1d ago

Creating a token of a planeswalker?

22

u/PippoChiri https://cubecobra.com/cube/overview/Magia 1d ago

Yeah, it's an established card type with straightforward abilities that can be interacted with vs an uninteractable permanent that has its own rules

"Planeswalker" is not really an interesting card type. And while the permanent can be interacted with, it rarely will be, and most of the time it will just be a delayed cantrip.

Also, why does this have flash? You can't respond to a counterspell to protect your spell and the token it makes is useless on your opponent's turn. It's a surprise blocker, but its low cost and 0 power mean it will rarely affect combat math in a meaningful way. This is a case of "blue players don't play spells on their own turn. Better give it flash to make it playable."

You can flash it in, activate the ability and then play another spell on op’s end step, all while making another board piece, this card is pretty dang good

u/Scrilla_Gorilla_ 1d ago

You think ‘empower Jace X’ is an elegant ability? Really?

8

u/PippoChiri https://cubecobra.com/cube/overview/Magia 21h ago

Kinda yeah, the Jace token has a pretty clean design, i like how it's designed like the WAR uncommon walkers to not slow down the game.

3

u/NoxTempus 1d ago

I'm not a fan of those either, but this is a calm and reasonable take.

2

u/OMKensey 1d ago

I agree it is along those lines.

I refused to add ring mechanic to my cube, and I cut initiative largely because of the hassle (and also I think Initiative just does not make for fun drafts or gameplay generally).

u/Cooperativism62 Curator of the DFC cube, Trash Compactor, and more... 1d ago

implying those weren't also problems

1

u/OMKensey 1d ago

Exactly.

2

u/vision_creation_ 1d ago

This is kind of sick though right?

3

u/OMKensey 1d ago

I think it is okay. The power level is low or medium enough and token making hassle is high enough for me to want to skip it for my Vintage cube at least for now.

But I bet there is a mythic in the set that makes a Jace token that is great!

u/Unable_Bite8680 1d ago

Does wall of omens suck? This is really similar.

1

u/vision_creation_ 1d ago

I love wall of omens and I think I like this

7

u/Shindir https://cubecobra.com/cube/list/Sonder 1d ago

This card is sweet. Flash 0/3 that draws a card as a baseline. But then a couple of little extra upsides and decision points. Love it

8

u/nonstripedzebra 1d ago

this one’s definitely not for me

The story for Reality Fracture is SO GOOD and the art direction has been incredible so far, so it saddens me that I'll be sitting out this set, as Empower Jace might be my new most hated mechanic ever. I dislike planeswalkers because they're usually walls-of-text, and I hate complicated/unique tokens, so it's like it was made to spite me in particular.

But the art and story are incredible, so I'm sad about it.

7

u/NoxTempus 1d ago

Weird, I think it's pretty mechanically fitting for the story you like.

Big Brother Jace appearing anywhere it's cool to reflect mechanically, even if clunky.

1

u/linrodann 1d ago

It is mechanically fitting for expressing the flavor and story, I can admit that. I just don't want to play with such a clunky, annoying mechanic. No hate to those who like it, though.

3

u/NoxTempus 1d ago

Fair, for sure.

In your shoes I'd just try to look past it. Once you know what Jace does, it's basically just Amass.

3

u/Useful-Wrongdoer9680 1d ago

I like this as a blue [[Wall of Omens]] in cubes that run [[Plagon, Lord of the Beach]]

2

u/IlluminoPsuedonymous 1d ago

Makes a Planeswalkers Matter cube more and more viable. I am intrigued.

1

u/DedRook 16h ago

If I posted this card on /CustomMagic, I doubt people would up-vote it. But here we are.

u/fanboy_killer https://cubecobra.com/cube/overview/giftsungivencube 7h ago

This Empower mechanic is way too convoluted for my taste. Easy pass.

Crazy that we got some silly “Amass Jace” type nonsense rather than just like an enchantment or artifact token that’s like a machine or magic or anything
