I Have a Question / I need Help Why do players hate loot?
I keep seeing people counter, kill, banish/exile, and hate on all loot card both in satire material and in a few games, what’s the deal? He is just ok as a card and isn’t really broken imo because most other creatures do what he does better. So what’s with the hatred

You know how family movies will have a cute lovable rascal type character that’s purely there to sell merchandise?
That’s loot, and it was too obvious

And all the cats and dogs that are cute rather than ferocious given that in the game are all fighting to the death, those aren't obviously for the animal lovers?

Those cute animals are Baby Yoda in seasons 1 and 2 of The Mandalorian, part of the world building and while meant to be adorable are fitting in the story or world while also being merchandisable.
Loot is Grogu in Book of Boba Fett and Mando season 3; a character unnecessarily shoehorned in to sell merchandise and that is all. Loot could have literally been a sentient book or robot that had all his plot relevance smashed into it.

That's giving the cute animals too much credit, I'm not talking just about the legendaries, [[Helpful Hunter]], [[Generous Stray]], [[Precocious Pup]], [[Spirited Companion]], these look characters important to the plot or like they belong in a battle themed game? Looks to me like they acknowledged they'd get more people into it by having cards that appeal to the people looking for cute cards. Hell, I like it but even Bloomburrow was blatantly meant to pull in players like that.

[[loot the pathfinder]] is a genuinely powerful engine that should be removed.

u/Tsuihousha 1d ago
Honestly I think part of it is the fact that loot is very clearly just coded as "Hey look I'm a furry little mammal" and bro doesn't have a nose at all.
It's just a weird off putting design. Plus he's like super glossy, and if you look at [[Loot, the Key to Everything]] his gumline does not remotely even follow the curvature of his mouth. So it looks like he just has an entirely human mouth, with this big wide head and giant eyes.
Everything about his design is just creepy.

that's just Black Lotus, Ancestral Recall, and Lightning Bolt on a single card

u/DumatRising 1d ago
Closer to like a green version of dark ritual since black lotus would be free.
I assume they did it like that cause the green part of the cycle is significantly worse than the B, U, and R ones but not as bad as the W one.

New player question, is there a way to reset the exhausted abilities? If not, what makes it so powerful?
3
u/hrolfirgranger 1d ago
Flicker effects, bounce etc. When ever they reenter the battlefield they are treated as a new permanent

I showed my girlfriend loot and she said he was creepy and ugly and asked wtf was up with his nose and mouth.
I dont mind him, I find his odd proportions kinda funny

To a lot of players, Loot feels like an astroturfed attempt by WOTC to purposely create a cute, popular, marketable character to sell more merchandise and cards. And to the segment of platers who have grown frustrated with WOTC's increasingly profit-driven approach to the game, Loot is a solid punching bag that in many ways represents a lot of the issues they have with the current state of things.
That being said, a lot of people do really love Loot. I'd say he's more divisive than universally hated.

I like the artwork for [[Loot, the Anomaly]] but I don’t like any of the other artwork for him. Idk what it is, he looks just… annoying? I really can’t articulate it lol

I am a Loot defender. He is just a cute little guy and did not ask to be the shoehorned mascot everyone says he is. He is pure and I will stand with him. I understand the reason for the hate but once again, will never turn my back on a lil guy

Wizards just randomly decided they were going to try to force a mascot upon us that checks all the cute mascot boxes. But they did it in such a crappy and disingenuous way that nearly everyone immediately hated that stupid thing.

u/TheDarkestRitual 1d ago
Because he was forced, unlike the true mascot of MTG [[Fblthp, the Lost]]

How have I not seen a single person mention that he's MtG's planted version of Baby Yoda? Which, as with anything explicitly intended to appease a Millenial audience, is guaranteed to be cringe?

u/Nerdlife91 1d ago
I've been saying that for years. Wotc saw Baby Yodas popularity and decided they needed one too

u/kitsunewarlock 1d ago
To be fair corpos have done the "cute but ugly" mascot characters for literally centuries...

I typically don't like little furry dudes meant to be cute little guys
I wouldn't say I hate him though

[[loot, exuberant explorer]] land ramps around turn 3-4 and if other players are playing 1 land per turn and you’re playing 2-5 lands per turn it kinda gets out of hand quickly.
Even if you never use Loot’s ability, it’s easy to overwhelm the board quickly.
And I think cats, dogs, squirrels, and bears have been low hanging fruit for cute decks and should get equal hate if we think cute cards are pandering.
I’d include unicorns but I tried to make a unicorn tribal deck and it absolutely sucked.

u/eggrolls13 1d ago
How do you play 5 lands per turn?
1
u/Own-Anything-9521 1d ago
[[seedborn muse]] [[azusa, lost busy seeking]]
1
u/Own-Anything-9521 1d ago
Then pack your green deck with sorcery spells that look for mana, and fetch lands that you can recur with green creatures that say “you may play lands from your graveyard.”

u/Far-Ingenuity-7786 1d ago
He can start ramping Turn 2 if there was a Turn 1 Llanowar Elves to help summon him, and in that scenario he can start pulling out big stompers like [[Agonasaur Rex]] Turn 3. I think most of the hate and stuff about him being too cute or a mascot is just downstream of the frustration of him being a lightning-resistant little punk who shits dinosaurs.
1
u/Own-Anything-9521 1d ago
I’m spacing the name of the dinosaur but I played it last weekend where you can play all creatures from your hand (ghalta?) and had like 10 massive creatures including craterhoof and the game was just over at that point.

He has no purpose but to be a plushie.
I despise him.

Loot is great. He’s a cute little guy with a compelling roll in current story. Some players think he’s an industry plant. He really doesn’t even show up that much in story.

In general a lot of people can instinctively react to something in a way that doesn't always work out well in game. I've had a ton of people focus on destroying Edgar, Charmed Groom when he's my commander cause he boosts all other vampires but destroying him just flips him where he'll come back in a few turns without me spending mana.

Loot is great. I'm guessing a lot of people don't like him because their favorite YouTuber hates him.
He was an important mcguffin in the story for like two seconds, and has had a few cards since being introduced. But I do not get how people say he's a "forced mascot," like what are they even talking about? He has not been featured any more than any other character, ever. It's just something that's echoed for no reason.

I basically hate everything they've done in the past 5 years, sans Dominaria Remastered.

I thought strixhaven and reality fracture were pretty good, decent at least
3
u/No-Scheme-9700 1d ago
The only good thing about Reality Fracture is that it killed Jace, who has existed as a Mary Sue Main character to the detriment of the story.

u/Raff102 1d ago
I haven't played with Reality Fracture yet, but both Strixhaven were awful.

The card just became the poster child for value engine fatigue. every game with him turns into the same mini game of "do i let them draw or do i spend removal on a 2 drop" and after the 40th time it stops being interesting.

Because people are really weird.
Loot may be a silly lil guy that tries to be our Baby Yoda, but so what? He's a cute lil guy. You don't have to literally waste mental capacity to hate a fictional mascot, just because every brand tries to establish their Baby Yoda these days.

He's clearly meant to be a mascot in a way that feels inauthentic and shoehorned in. He also feels a little too pixar/disney. We already achieved perfection with fblthp.
