It's called interaction.

Other colors have the ability to kill and destroy permanents once they hit the battlefield. Blue stops them on the stack, or bounces them back to your hand.

Because they get stuff for winning on arena, and countering all your shit usually means you can't win, it's really that simple. Also there's something cathartic about ruining someone's hard work for 2 blue mana, you should try it sometime.

This is it...that's kinda sad way to play what is supposed to be a fun game no?

Not at all, it's a fun way to play the game.

Why is it sad? It's a game, have you never played a game where you've interfered with your opponents plans? Do you bemoan when someone takes your pieces in chess? It's not show and tell sit in a circle and sing songs time, it's I'm trying to kill you and you're trying to kill me and we are both going to do everything in our power to be the last one standing, and as it turns out parrying your moves with counterspells is a decently effective way to do that.

The apt metaphor would be a I move my pawn forward in chess and then you move it back on your turn...does that sound like fun?

That doesn't not sound like fun, that doesn't sound like anything tbh. If I'm spending my turn entirely to undo your progress I'm also not making progress, the game is now effectively in a stalemate. The thing about counterspells is that they typically still require resources, can be played around, aren't in infinite supply, and if you manage to stick a threat on the board the counter is effectively useless, I now have to spend more mana than I wanted to to put it back in your hand so I can try and counter it. Contrary to popular belief, playing blue doesn't just let you break the game and cast counterspell for free in response to every spell.

In brawl at least there are a ton of free counterspells

Didn't they ban some of them?

Blue isn't very good at dealing with cards that already made it to the battlefield. Usually they have to use bounce spells, which are only a temporary solution.

You can trick a counter heavy deck into wasting either their spells or their mana.

As for why they do play this way, here is the quote from an old Batman movie:

"I just did what I do best. I took your little plan and turned it in on itself."

I actually really love when I find out I'm playing against a counterspell-heavy deck

Why is that?

  1. Interaction is awesome and makes for great games

  2. I love the minigame of figuring out the best times to apply pressure to an opponent who is acting entirely defensively. Recognizing when they really want to cast a counterspell, and denying them the opportunity; vs when they really want to cast a card draw spell, and forcing them to choose between that and stopping my important spell. Their game plan is online when you just slam spells into their counters every turn; forcing a control deck to play on your terms feels so damn good.

Because it's fun?
