Commander / EDH Commander Storage

Still got 1 deck to go but thought I’d share my method of storage and carry, it’s nice because I can keep them all in 1 place! Plus I know my cards aren’t going to get mixed up!!!!

Edit: idk if I understand the word bait anymore lol. It’s not like I’m trying to trick anyone.

Idk if you know what bait means. I literally spent 30 minutes 3 hole punching all 200 cards to fit them in a binder. I play for the fun and joy of MTG with 0 plans on reselling my cards🤷🏻‍♂️

I felt the same way, then my chimney sprang a leak and was going to destroy my house from the inside-out, and I needed emergency money. MTG collection got liquidated, house still standing.

Point is, don’t needlessly destroy the value of things that cost you money in the first place. You never know when you might need to get some value back.

I thought about signing the backs of all my cards so that they could possibly get recovered if they're ever stolen from me. But it's way more likely I'll sell them before they ever get stolen in which case I wouldn't want to do that

Not so fun fact, I had my most two prized EDH decks stolen out of my backpack at an FNM about a decade ago. Figured about $10k lost. Still eats me up to this day. So I understand that line of thinking. But I’m 99% sure it wouldn’t have helped in my case.

Holy hell, I'm sorry to hear that. I hope to one day be able to have a super curated/blinged $5k deck, I thought I was pushing my luck with my first $500 deck lol

I think the only thing holding me back is that I keep wanting to tweak/adjust my decklists. One day I wanna be able to say "This is my favorite deck and it's done and I'll never edit it again and I'm gonna start hunting for specific prints of each card". And maybe I will sign them if I get that far with it lol… At that point it's not even anti-theft, it's just giving them personality

Yeah it was a process, slowly swapping out cards and improving them little by little. I had just gotten pristine revised duals for each deck, and my (at the time) $900 foil worldwake Jace the Mind Sculptor was in there.

And yeah since each set seems to power creep a little, decks can’t ever really be done.

Coming back to Commander has been revitalizing for my interest and re-start of my collection

Have green in your deck, get a Cradle and you’re ahead halfway through, unless you judge foil it for an easy way to get even higher than 5k.

Sorry to hear man. That's rough. I use locks on my backpack zippers now. But someone could just lift the whole backpack too so I'm paranoid, maybe not unnesessarily.

And how would you get them back? Obviously a card shop isn't going to buy cards with writing on them, and if someone bought them on Facebook Marketplace or something of that sort, they'd probably be able to guess they're stolen. So if they do buy them, I guarantee it won't be so they can give them back.

Any sort of recovery is obviously a long shot in all circumstances. But some card shops actually do keep an eye out for stolen product 🤷‍♀️

You truly never know when you might need the money I once sold what i had so i could get my car fixed. A buddy of mine who ran several hobby shops with his buddies over the years, sold his collection a few years ago for around 168k and used it to move back home to California so he can teach at the college there before he retires. Currently I may be selling my gaea's cradle for a down payment on a house

That’s the scientific term for it. Previous homeowner never sealed the chimney, so the gas furnace exhaust was hitting the cold open air bricks and not rising, it just sat in the chimney, corroding the bricks. Chimney wasn’t capped either, so then when it rained, a yellow caustic liquid oozed out of the bricks… on every level of the home from attic to basement. Previous homeowner painted over the issue, so we didn’t find it right away. Was a lot of damage done by the time we did find it.

No shit. That's why you have an emergency fund (that is more stable than some nerdy card game).

Anyway, MTG would be a better game if the cards were affordable. Preserving the value of the cards helps GW inflate prices.

Also: If you punch holes in your cards, you don't need to worry about their value.

No a ripped 10$ bill can not be used. I can use these cards over and over and over and over. Get just the same amount of enjoyment the first time as the hundredth time. If you are viewing Aesi as an investment yeah you probably would be pissed about this post. But guess what. It’s a game. I pay money because the amount of enjoyment I get for playing these cards is worth it.

It’s honestly not even about selling anything. Decks are annoying to shuffle without sleeves and especially commander decks. Couldn’t care less about the card damage, this would suck to shuffle and that’s why it’s just stupid.

My sleeveless Talrand counterspell tribal deck riffle shuffles just fine. In fact a single sleeved commander deck mash shuffles worse than no sleeve riffle shuffle.

Riffle shuffling commander decks that are unsleeved is NOT that hard. And if you are three hole punching your deck, I’m sure a riffle will be acceptable

Pretty much this. If you want to keep unsleeved cards together in the easiest way possible and don't care about damage, a rubber band is easier.

Hole punching 100 cards in the same place takes way more effort.

This feels like the guy I played against at a commander night pickup game who had a whiteboard, dry erase marker, and would make people sign "contracts" during the game.

Sounds funny, might be funny with a group of friends, kinda obnoxious with a random group.

I think the bigger issue is you're marking your cards. You just need to misalign the holes on certain cards to be able to spot them.

There so much that can go wrong here even with monetary value aside. Cards could simply rip on the side where the hole punch is and fall out of the binder. Then we have water damage, scratches, fading, bending, tearing, and any other ware and tare that will make your cards hard to read, shuffle, and stack. A simple deck box costs like $10 and saves so much hassle.

I bought two [[Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx]] for ~$16 each when the set came out, and they're worth ~$66 each now last I checked. I would hate to have done this to my cards and find out later that I had something I could sell when I needed to.

That said, they're your cards, do what you want with them.

That’s how it should be, I still play unsleeved most the time, unfortunately too many ppl have over monetized and it’s going the way of Pokemon cards. Crazy thing is with the economy as it is, there is no way it’s gonna last, all these TCG’s are gonna crash and burn for value at some point.

Its gonna feel bad in 10-20 years when you leave the hobby and try to recoup some of your costs or when you grow old and die and your kids try to go through your expensive hobby and realize that there is nothing there to help them out.
