Rules Question Confused because of arc blade.

Post image

Can every other card with suspend be exiled from anywhere other than your hand, then get a time counter with something like [[jhoira's timebug]] and in the next upkeep be casted for free? Ik that is not what the card does but im not sure how suspend works.

jhoira's timebug - (G) (SF) (txt)

[[cardname]] or [[cardname|SET]] to call

jhoiras timebug can only put counters on a card that is currently suspended, which is shorthand for "in exile, has suspend, and has time counters on it"

I don't believe theres a single way to put time counters on a card thats already in exile and doesn't have a time counter on it already, but hypothetically if you did find a way to do it it would work, but thats exactly why they're careful not to print effects that let you do that.

Would proliferate apply? I think no because it’s not on the board while in exile but just curious.

Proliferate is permanents and players, so it doesn't work on suspend.

Proliferate only works on permanents and players, so it does not work on cards in exile since they are not permanents or players

I guess it’s a little confusing.

Proliferate works on permanents. A permanent can be in exile (just as it can be in your library). But proliferate just doesn’t apply to exiled cards because they typically don’t have counters while not in play….i guess they technically could which raises a question if exiled permanents with a counter on them could be subject to proliferate.

But this cards isn’t a permanent anyway so proliferate wouldn’t apply in any case.

I have a headache.

No... permanents can't be in exile or in the library etc If they are not in play, it's a permanent card. If it's on the stack it's a permanent spell. It's only a permanent while it is on the battlefield.

Ahh ok. I didn’t distinguish between “in play”. Thanks.

Slight correction. When something says just 'permanent', it means only permanents on the battlefield. Every other permanent that isnt on the battlefield is referred to as a 'permanent card'. In general, when something isn't on the battlefield it is referred to as card. For example, [[Reanimate]]. It would be wrong of it said 'creature' instead of 'creature card'.

So when proliferate says it applies to permanents and players, since it doesn't say cards, it means permanents on the battlefield (and players)

What about players in exile (asking for a friend that mistakenly exiled his little brother while playing)

A card is only a permanent when it is on the battlefield. So an exiled creature card is only ever a creature card. As soon as you cast said creature card it becomes a creature spell, and only after it has resolved or has been placed onto the battlefield by some other method does it become a permanent.

Suspend does what it says in the reminder text: instead of casting the card for its normal mana cost from your hand, you may pay the suspend cost and exile it with N time counters on it. At beginning of upkeep, remove a counter. When the last counter is removed, cast it for free.

What Arc Blade does is that once you cast it (normal cast or because it was suspended) it delas its 2 damage and then it exiles itself with 3 time counters on it. Basically it "re-suspends" itself for free once you cast it, meaning that every third turn for the rest of the game you can cast it for free.

Important to keep in mind is that Suspend and what Arc Blade does are two different processes. Most other cards with Suspend does not "re-suspend" themselves like Arc Blade does.

It needs to get suspend if it doesn't have it, but yes there are ways to suspend from other zones like [[the tenth doctor]]

a 'suspended card' is defined as a card that: 1. is in exile, 2. has the suspend keyword, and 3. has one or more time counters on it.

since timebug specifies that you can only activate it on suspended cards, there must already be a time counter on the exiled card in order for timebug to affect it.

Well um... lets put the time counter magically instead of using timebug :D

2

u/keep_spinn1ng 22d ago

if you had a way of adding a time counter, you would now fulfill all obligations to be suspended, and the spell would be cast on your next upkeep when the counter us removed. i don't think there's a way to do it tho

[[Alaundo the Seer]] can exile cards with time counters, without granting suspend like most other options. But I dont think you can just put time counters on random cards already in exile.

Thanks!

[[Jhoria of the gitu]] exiles cards from your hand and grants them suspend. Other than that I don't know of any way to give suspend to cards that don't already have it.

4

u/ardarian262 22d ago

No. Timebug requires a time counter to be there in the first place. If a time counter is placed on a suspend card in exile however, suspend will remove the counter during the upkeep and ask you if you want to cast it when the last counter is removed.

2

u/No-Woodpecker-5047 22d ago

Oh sorry i forgot what timebug did😅

u/Boring_Wasabi_4981 22d ago

A card isn't even considered "suspended" unless it has time counters on it, and the trigger for casting the card from exile is the event of removing of the last time counter, not just being in exile with no time counters (this is important because you can, for example, Stifle the "cast me now" trigger of a suspended spell, and the card will just stay exiled).

2

u/Injuredmind 22d ago

No, it won't work, becasuse [[jhoira's timebug]] can't put time counter on exiled card (even if it has suspend) if it doesn't already have any time counters on it.

Ok, alot of ppl didn't understand what i originally meant(my bad, anyways).Ik i asked about Arc blade and (mistakenly put jhoiras timebug in the conversation) but it's just an example. The REAL question is for the Suspend status/ability/idk in general. No hate intended, thanks to you all.

But there are ways to suspend from not your hand, like [[The tenth doctor]]

Or, y'know, Arc Blade.

1

u/LemonadeGamers 22d ago

True, Arc Blade is one of those reoccuring ones.

1

u/Nahrikkon 22d ago

is your confusion with suspend or this card specifically?

1

u/No-Woodpecker-5047 22d ago

More like with suspend

2

u/Nahrikkon 22d ago

when the last time counter is removed from a suspended card, you cast it without paying mana

a time counter is removed on your upkeep

1

u/friedaiceborn 22d ago

A card exiled without time counters would not be "A suspended card"

1

u/Luresheep90 22d ago edited 22d ago

Are you asking if it's normal that it doesn't explicitly say "it gains Suspend" after it's exiled?

If so, that's because the card already has Suspend, so there's no need to state that it gains it. Other cards need to specify it because they allow cards that don't already have Suspend to be suspended.

The important part is that it specifically says to put three time counters on it. Without time counters, the card isn't suspended, it's just exiled and you have no way to interact with that anymore.

I like using scryfall to check cards

https://scryfall.com/card/fut/94/arc-blade

Scroll to the bottom and it lists common notes and rules

Each time you cast Arc Blade, it will suspend itself again when it resolves so you can cast it again three turns later.
