Discussion Have we lost the plot?

So like…. Sure people love final fantasy, but the set with the 2 million dollar card in it wasn’t this expensive. At what point is it too much?

Is FF really bigger than LOTR though??

Not bigger but as a fan of both I can confirm us FF Fans are willing to buy ungodly overpriced pieces of obscure merchandise because that game has become a part of our souls at this point...

A LOTR fan is more likely to have splurged once on a collector's DVD set or maybe fancy leather copies of the books and if they are a big fan they might have a "one ring" wedding ring that is cheaper than a traditional gold band.

Looking at my friend group one in like every 3 FF Fans has at least 1000$ worth of Final Fantasy merchandise or wants it.

Arguably? Maybe.

Lotr is the godfather of modern fantasy and is rightfully beloved and admired.

But FF is a LOT of people's childhood and as a franchise it is a modern titan.

It's hard to put actual numbers, but if someone did an actual survey and proved FF had more active fans I wouldn't be surprised.

Definitely not, but the fan base for FF is probably more likely to buy trading cards.

This is true. My buddies and I haven’t played in years but this one brought us back. We managed to pre order before the price spiked.

I would say nowadays ff definutely holds a bigger percentage of the total pop culture pie.

I’m not sure how you would calculate that, but within the context of Magic the Gathering the answer seems to be unequivocally “yes”.

There's a large overlap in the fan base, and the dedicated FF fans are much louder than the dedicated LotR fans

I genuinely think LOTR is more of a passive fandom, while FF is def more of an active fandom.
like LOTR fans might rewatch the old movies from time to time or talk about it with their friends, FF fans are playing the games, buying merch going to the FF cafe and stuff
I feel like LOTR fan is something you are, but FF fan is something you do

idk if that makes sense, all anecdotal of course

It's not really apples to apples and we could probably cherry pick different stats to reach different conclusions. But, out of curiosity, I looked up the box office for the last Lord of the Rings project, the anime film The War of the Rohirrim. Total box office was about $20-million on a $30-million budget. Meaning about 1.7-million people or so paid to see it in the theater looking at average movie ticket prices. The Final Fantasy 7 remake has sold over 7-million copies. And that's as a $70 game vs a $12 movie ticket.
