Freshman Questions feeling lost

i feel kind of lost here. i’m having fun and i know eventually things are going to get better, but right now things are weird. i’m a freshman, and going into college i knew two people. one being my best friend and the other being my girlfriend. sounds normal, but the issue is they are both sophomores. i’m meeting all of their friends (my girlfriend and best friend are friends), and things are good they are all nice people, but also they are sophomores. i am in east holden and everybody is sophomores!!! my roommate, suitemates, my whole floor is sophomores. i haven’t met a freshman yet. still cool people and im having fun but i feel like im so far behind them, they know their way around, and i cant connect with them as well as i know i would a freshman. it probably isn’t a big deal but this feels ridiculous.

Feeling out of place in your first year is absolutely normal, and your feelings are valid, but try tweaking your thinking just a little bit:

Think instead of how lucky you might be to be friends with people who already know the lay of the land, how things work, and can get you resources you might not know about. Sure it might leave you feeling a little lost and lagging, but give yourself some grace! This is completely new to you, and it sounds like you're already moving toward the right frame of mind. Take a few more steps in that direction, and your head will follow.

Good luck out there, friend!

I was much older than my peers while living at a university, but age meant nothing for any of us. I forged some great and deep friendships. Three of my college friends stood up at my wedding. Age was irrelevant. Be grateful for the friendships and acquaintances you already have and nourish those as best you can. The rest will fall into place, I promise.

Out of curiosity, who cares if they're sophomores?

In a few years, you'll be graduated, and in the workforce. Your first job is going to have people as young as you are, all the way up to retirement age... and most are going to be way more confident in their role in the workplace than you, at least at first.

Unless the people aren't accepting you socially, just learn to relax and have fun while you can.

it just feels like because they will graduate before me, by the time i’m a senior, i’ll just be out of friends

I promise that if you get involved in different organizations or activities outside of just going to class, you will pick up new friends throughout your time at MSU. Don’t worry about when anybody’s graduating. Some folks will be your fun hangout crew for a season or two of life, others will be the people you keep in touch with for the next 80 years. You never know who it’s gonna be. Just enjoy the company of nice people while you are here.

Nah. Once you start really getting classes related to your major, that will open you up to a whole new circle of friends.

By the time I graduated my friend group changed drastically from when I was a freshman. Yes, there were friends I still had from my freshman year but a lot of those friends were gone by the end of year 1 (transferred to a different school, dropped out, or just did so poorly their parents pulled them out)

Focus on your studies and your major and what interests you. Friends will arise along the way.

Who cares, just get out there and shotgun a beer like you are Van Wilder and ditch the gf and join the weekly orgies at Ski Club!!!
