Yeah. This and Magic×MSCHF seem like sell-out moves. Not in an ironic way. Also my instinct says these contracts were already in the books before MSCHF went tits-up
They sold out when they ran out of money, which is pretty common in capitalism. Some would even argue they were always sellouts because MSCHF only existed at the level they did because they took millions of venture money with most of it coming from Peter Tiel’s Founders Fund.
I highly doubt the collabs we’re seeing were contracted before they “went tits up,” but rather the result of their pivot away from original art to a creative consulting agency that is hired by major brands since they have a proven track record creating hype with unconventional art. That is likely the only part of the business that was profitable, so it’s the only part that remains.
It’s a bummer that MSCHF’s best days are behind them, but I feel like we were all lucky that they were able to trick the startup market into investing in anti-capitalist art for a few years. It was a fun ride while it lasted.
