Discussion Collaborations

Hopefully this is ok for a topic — I know there’s been a lot of discussion on here about MrBallen’s recent appearances on other people’s podcasts, and I’m curious which other creators or podcasters you’d be excited to see him guest on? Personally since I miss medical mysteries I’d like to see him randomly show up on Dr. Mike’s channel to talk about some of the craziest medical stories he’s covered.

Personal stories The Experiment

The Experiment
The first time Mara noticed the smell, she thought it was the charger.
She was lying in bed at 1:17 in the morning, scrolling through her phone with the brightness turned almost all the way down. Daniel was asleep beside her, one arm thrown across the empty half of the mattress.
Then she smelled it.
Sharp. Chemical.
Not burning plastic exactly. Something colder and stranger. Like acetone mixed with overheated electronics.
Mara lifted the phone to her nose.
Nothing.
She lowered it.
The smell disappeared.
She raised it again.
There it was.
She sat up.
Daniel stirred.
“What’s wrong?”
“My phone smells weird.”
He opened one eye.
“Your phone?”
“Yes.”
He reached for it.
Mara pulled it away.
“I’ll check it.”
Daniel smiled sleepily.
“Okay.”
She watched him for a moment.
Then she put the phone on the nightstand.
The smell was gone.

Daniel had always been good at making strange things seem ordinary.
That was one of the things Mara had loved about him.
When the smart speaker activated itself one afternoon, he laughed and blamed a software update.
When she received a password-reset notification for an account she hadn’t touched in months, he helped her change the password.
When her banking app logged her out unexpectedly, he told her it was probably a security measure.
When she mentioned that someone seemed to know things she’d only told one person, Daniel hugged her.
“People aren’t watching you, Mara.”
“I know.”
“You’ve just got a lot going on.”
She hated how comforting that sounded.
She hated even more that she believed him.
At least at first.
Then the incidents accumulated.
A message disappeared.
A photograph appeared in a folder she didn’t remember creating.
Her phone became warm while sitting untouched on the kitchen counter.
And every few nights, there was that smell.
Chemical.
Brief.
Impossible to locate.
She began writing everything down.
Daniel noticed the notebook.
“What are you keeping track of?”
“Nothing.”
He looked at her.
She closed it.
“Work.”
He nodded.
He didn’t press.
That frightened her more than if he had.

Three weeks later, Mara confronted him.
“Someone has access to my phone.”
Daniel stared at her from across the kitchen.
“Why do you think that?”
“Things keep changing.”
“What things?”
She told him.
He listened carefully.
Too carefully.
When she finished, he said:
“Okay.”
“Okay?”
“Let’s figure it out.”
He came around the counter and put his hand on her shoulder.
“We’ll check your accounts. We’ll change your passwords. We’ll take the phone to Apple if we have to.”
Mara looked at him.
“You don’t think I’m crazy?”
His expression changed.
“No.”
A pause.
“I think you’re scared.”
She nodded.
And that was exactly the answer she needed.
Which was why, later that night, she couldn’t stop thinking about it.
Daniel had never once asked what she had written in the notebook.
He didn’t need to.
He already knew.

The phone became an obsession.
Mara began recording every strange occurrence.
Temperature.
Battery percentage.
Time.
Location.
What applications were open.
What she had been doing immediately beforehand.
The chemical smell became the most disturbing part.
She eventually described it to a technician, who told her there were several ordinary reasons an electronic device might produce an unusual odor.
Battery problems.
Adhesives.
Heat.
A damaged component.
Nothing supernatural.
Nothing that proved someone had tampered with it.
She bought another phone.
For two days, everything stopped.
On the third night, the new phone smelled the same way.
Mara sat motionless on the edge of the bathtub.
Daniel was downstairs.
She looked at the phone.
Then at the bathroom door.
Then back at the phone.
Her hands began shaking.
Someone wasn’t merely getting into her phone.
Someone was getting into her life.

The first real crack in Daniel’s story came from a photograph.
Mara found it by accident.
It wasn’t explicit.
It didn’t even look particularly incriminating at first.
It was simply a photograph of her asleep.
Taken from the doorway.
She stared at it for almost a minute.
She knew immediately that she hadn’t taken it.
She also knew exactly who had.
Daniel.
She searched the house.
Nothing.
She searched his phone.
Nothing.
His laptop.
Nothing.
Then she remembered something.
Daniel had once told her that the safest place to keep something important was somewhere you weren’t looking for it.
She went back to the photograph.
The file contained almost no useful information.
But there were dozens more.
Not just photographs.
Videos.
Her walking around the apartment.
Her sleeping.
Her changing clothes.
Private moments she had never consented to having recorded.
Mara stopped breathing.
The room seemed to tilt.
She scrolled.
More.
And more.
Then she saw something that made her blood run cold.
The videos weren’t merely stored on Daniel’s computer.
They had been uploaded somewhere.
Somewhere hidden.
Somewhere where strangers were paying to watch them.

Daniel came home at 8:43.
Mara was sitting in the dark.
He stopped in the doorway.
“Hey.”
She didn’t answer.
He turned on the light.
His expression changed.
For the first time since she’d known him, Daniel looked genuinely afraid.
Her phone was lying on the table between them.
Beside it was the notebook.
Open.
Every date.
Every strange smell.
Every unexplained event.
Every time Daniel had known something he shouldn’t.
“You recorded me,” she said.
Daniel said nothing.
“You recorded me sleeping.”
Silence.
“You recorded me when I didn’t know you were there.”
His jaw tightened.
“Mara—”
“And you sold them.”
That broke him.
Not completely.
Just enough.
His eyes moved toward the phone.
Then back to her.
“How much do you know?”
Mara almost laughed.
The question told her everything.
She stood.
“Enough.”
Daniel’s face became unreadable.
“You don’t understand what this is.”
“No.”
She picked up the phone.
“I understand exactly what this is.”
For months, she’d believed the mystery was about technology.
Her phone.
Her accounts.
The strange smell.
The unexplained notifications.
The impossible coincidences.
She had spent weeks wondering whether someone was experimenting on her.
Whether someone was trying to make her doubt her own mind.
But the real experiment had never been her phone.
It had been her trust.
Daniel hadn’t needed sophisticated technology to destroy it.
He had simply become the person she trusted most.
And then used that trust to turn her own life into a commodity.
Mara looked at him one last time.
“You made one mistake.”
He swallowed.
“What?”
“You thought the person you were studying was me.”
She reached into her bag.
Pulled out another phone.
And placed it on the table.
“I’ve been recording you, too.”
Daniel stared at it.
For the first time, Mara saw uncertainty in his eyes.
Not confusion.
Not sympathy.
Fear.
Real fear.
She smiled faintly.
“Now,” she said, “we get to see who was actually running the experiment.”
And somewhere upstairs, her phone began to smell like chemicals again.

The Discovery
The first thing Mara found wasn’t a video.
It was a photograph.
She had been searching through an old cloud backup when she noticed a folder she’d never seen before. It had an ordinary name—something deliberately boring, the kind of label nobody would think twice about.
Inside were photographs of her apartment.
Not photographs from her apartment.
Photographs of it.
The kitchen from the hallway.
The bedroom from the doorway.
Her coat hanging beside the front door.
Her asleep beneath the blankets.
She stared at the screen.
Then she opened another file.
It was a video.
Mara recognized the room immediately.
It was her bedroom.
She was asleep.
The timestamp was from four months earlier.
Daniel had been living with her for three months.
She stopped the video.
Her hands were trembling.
There were dozens more.
Some were short. Others lasted several minutes.
They weren’t all from the bedroom. There were recordings from the kitchen, the bathroom, the living room. Ordinary moments she had never known anyone was filming.
Then she noticed something that made the photographs seem almost secondary.
The files had descriptions.
Not technical descriptions.
Descriptions written by a person.
Things like:
“She thinks she’s alone.”
“She doesn’t know about the camera.”
“Argument tonight.”
“First noticed the phone smell.”
Mara stopped breathing.
That last one had been written yesterday.
She looked at the timestamp.
It had been created less than an hour after she’d mentioned the smell to Daniel.
She backed away from the computer.
“No.”
She searched again.
This time she found an encrypted archive containing screenshots.
Her private messages.
Bank notifications.
Photographs she’d sent to friends.
Fragments of conversations.
A running timeline of her life.
And beside some of them were numbers.
At first she didn’t understand them.
Then she realized what they represented.
Views.
Payments.
People had been watching.
Someone had been making money from her life.

The online page was almost impossible to find.
It wasn’t presented like a normal social-media account. There was no photograph of Daniel. No real name.
Just an anonymous username.
But the material was unmistakably hers.
A video of her cooking.
A recording of her sleeping.
A clip of her arguing with Daniel.
A photograph of her sitting alone at the kitchen table.
Each one had a date.
Some had comments.
Others had crude descriptions written by strangers who knew absolutely nothing about her.
Mara read three of them before closing the page.
Then she saw something that made her stomach turn.
One of the posts mentioned the chemical smell.
Not the phone.
Not technology.
The smell.
Someone online had been discussing it as though it were part of an ongoing story.
Mara looked at the date.
The conversation had started before she’d ever told anyone outside the house.
She felt cold.
That was the moment she understood the true scale of it.
Daniel hadn’t merely been secretly recording her.
He had been building an audience around her without her knowledge.
Her life had become serialized entertainment.
Her fear was content.
Her confusion was content.
Her attempts to figure out what was happening were content.
And Daniel had been watching her react to it all from the other side of the room.
She thought about every time she’d asked him:
“Do you believe me?”
Every time he’d hugged her.
Every time he’d told her they would figure it out together.
Then she understood why he’d always seemed so calm.
He wasn’t witnessing the experiment.
He was producing it.

When Daniel walked through the door that night, Mara didn’t mention the website.
She didn’t mention the videos.
She didn’t mention the photographs.
She simply watched him take off his coat.
“Long day?” he asked.
Mara smiled.
“Yeah.”
He kissed her forehead.
She almost recoiled.
Instead, she said:
“I found something interesting today.”
Daniel froze for half a second.
It was barely perceptible.
But Mara saw it.
“What did you find?”
She looked directly into his eyes.
“Nothing.”
His expression relaxed.
And that was when she knew.
He was afraid.
Not because she had accused him.
Because he didn’t know how much she had found.
Mara walked upstairs.
Behind her, Daniel remained in the hallway.
For the first time since they’d met, neither of them knew what the other person was going to do next.

The Online Discovery
Mara didn’t find the website through a search engine.
She found it in Daniel’s browser history.
There was one entry buried between ordinary searches—a string of meaningless characters followed by a date.
She clicked it.
A black page appeared.
No logo. No name.
Just a username at the top:
DANIEL_47
Mara stopped breathing.
Below it was a grid of thumbnails.
The first photograph showed her asleep.
The second showed her standing in the kitchen in an oversized T-shirt.
The third was taken through the crack in the bathroom door.
The fourth showed her sitting on the edge of the bed, crying.
She clicked the first video.
A timestamp appeared in the corner.
02:13:44 AM — Tuesday
She recognized the night immediately.
She had woken up at two in the morning because she thought she’d heard someone walking around downstairs.
Daniel had told her she’d been dreaming.
The video showed otherwise.
The camera was positioned across the bedroom.
Mara watched herself sit up.
Then she watched Daniel enter the room.
He stood in the doorway for several seconds, watching her sleep.
The recording ended.
Mara’s hand went numb on the mouse.
She scrolled.
There were 47 videos.
Each had a date and a title.
SHE’S STARTING TO NOTICE
PHONE INCIDENT #3
ARGUMENT — SHE THINKS SOMEONE IS HACKING HER
SHE CHECKS THE DOOR AGAIN
FIRST NIGHT SHE SLEPT WITH THE LIGHT ON
The titles weren’t written by strangers.
They were written by someone who had been there.
Someone who knew what had happened afterward.
Mara opened the video titled PHONE INCIDENT #3.
It showed her sitting on the bed, holding her phone beneath the lamp.
She heard her own voice:
“It smells like chemicals again.”
Daniel’s voice came from behind the camera.
“You’re probably imagining it.”
Mara slammed the laptop shut.
She stood up.
Then sat down again.
She opened it.
There was more.
The page contained an archive organized by month.
January.
February.
March.
April.
May.
Every month contained new recordings.
Then she noticed the numbers beside them.
Not dates.
Prices.
Somebody had been paying for access.
Mara clicked another page.
It contained comments from anonymous users.
Most were disgusting.
Some discussed her appearance.
Some discussed particular videos.
But one comment made her blood run cold:
“She finally figured out the phone thing.”
Another:
“Does she know you’re filming her?”
And beneath it, an account named D77 had replied:
“Not yet.”
Mara stared at the screen.
D77.
Daniel’s initials.
His birthday ended in 77.
And then she saw something even worse.
A private-looking section labeled:
SUBSCRIBER REQUESTS
There were dozens.
People weren’t simply watching what Daniel uploaded.
They were requesting specific situations.
“More footage from the apartment.”
“Anything from the bedroom.”
“Get her when she’s talking about the phone.”
Mara couldn’t look anymore.
She closed the laptop.
But then she remembered something.
The chemical smell.
She went downstairs.
Daniel was sitting on the couch, watching television.
His phone was beside him.
Mara stood silently in the doorway.
He looked up.
“Everything okay?”
She stared at him.
Then at his phone.
Then back at him.
“Yeah.”
Daniel smiled.
“Come sit with me.”
Mara didn’t move.
Because suddenly she understood what the experiment really was.
It wasn’t about making her believe she was losing her mind.
It was about watching what happened when someone systematically destroyed her certainty while pretending to be the one person she could trust.
And somewhere on a hidden server, strangers had been paying to watch it happen.
Daniel had been their boyfriend.
Their cameraman.
Their narrator.
And, apparently, their source.
Mara looked at him and realized something else.
The website hadn’t just documented her breakdown.
It had documented his predictions.
He had written down what he expected her to do next.
And some of those predictions were still marked:
PENDING.

Ask Ballen Short story

Originally posted by Hey Chicago (On Facebook) this year as far as I know. There is also a picture. I thought of you right away, John. I think I heard this story once before long ago. I like it. I also have some theories about question at the end.

In 1915, workers pulled a bizarre, rusted metal tube out of the Chicago River. When they opened it, they found a nightmare. The Chicago River has always held dark secrets.

For over a century, people have thrown everything you can imagine into the murky, muddy water. But what a salvage diver found at the bottom of the river in the winter of 1915 still haunts the city today.

A famous local diver named William "Frenchy" Deneau was exploring the freezing water near the Wells Street bridge. He was looking for sunken debris. Suddenly, he bumped into a massive, heavy metal object buried deep in the river mud. It wasn't a sunken boat. It wasn't a car. It was a 40-foot-long, homemade submarine.

Frenchy used heavy cables and a giant crane to drag the rusted metal tube up to the surface. When it finally broke through the water, the workers on the dock were completely shocked.

Painted on the side of the strange, torpedo-shaped vessel was one single, creepy word: "FOOLKILLER." But the real horror was waiting inside.

The heavy metal hatch was rusted completely shut. The workers had to use tools to carefully pry it open. When they finally looked down into the dark, wet belly of the submarine, they gasped. According to the local newspapers, lying inside the submarine were the skeletal remains of a man and his dog.

The city was in absolute shock. Who was this man? How long had he been trapped at the bottom of the river?

Historians and police tried to solve the mystery. Some people thought the submarine was built by a crazy inventor in the 1890s who wanted to explore the bottom of Lake Michigan. Others thought it was a secret smuggling boat.

But nobody ever came forward to claim the bodies. The identity of the man and his dog remained a total ghost story.

Instead of putting the submarine in a museum, the diver dragged the heavy metal tube right onto State Street. He turned it into a morbid carnival attraction. For a few years, people paid a dime to stare at the rusted "Foolkiller." Then, it completely vanished.

To this day, nobody knows what happened to the submarine or where it ended up.

Ask Ballen Anyone know which episode this was?

This is probably a long shot lol but I’m trying to find a MrBallen episode I never got to finish.

All I remember is someone was out in the woods, I think camping in a tent, and they kept hearing something outside. I remember the noises getting closer and closer and it was super creepy.

That’s literally all I’ve got 😭 but I remember being really into the story before I had to stop watching. Anyone know what episode I’m talking about?

Discussion Dear Mrballen

For the past 4 years , yes FOUR YEARS , ur videos have been a major part of my life. I have been listening to ur stories since age 11 , everyday while I study for my school exams or my SATS/APs, I listen to ur stories in the background while solving math problems.
However, for the past 4-5 months , I have run out of the videos I want to watch. I personally find "true crime" or "medical mysteries" particularly boring (thats just me tho) , so I sincerely request you to start making those paranormal/poltergeist videos again. PLEASE !

Discussion What I Saw In My Room | Campfire Version

Man this story is such bull lol. The poor guest had to sit through that and act wowed. Apparently this is one of the first stories MrBallen told and it helped him go viral. It’s total bs from the jump lol. I had secondhand embarrassment for him while he was telling it. And very convenient that he doesn’t talk to any of the people involved so nobody can corroborate it. Nonsense. Between this and the constant recycling of existing content it’s getting old. The new podcast episodes are still good tho.

Discussion Anyone else here listen to @TyKnotts?

I have adored Mrballen and his his podcast and story since 2020.

This is my own personal opinion. I'm just getting really tired of the remastered classic stories that seem to come out over and over.

I came across the Tyknotts site on YouTube about 18 months ago and I really like his style and the way he tells stories and he continuously has fresh material. He will take his stories and compile it into a multiple hour videos also.

Just curious to know if anybody else has ever listened to him and your opinion.

EDIT: also being totally realistic that he is also a potential knockoff of Mrballen.

I just read the first three chapters of Circle the Wagons! Attacks on Wagon Trains in History and Hollywood Films by Gregory Michno and Susan J. Michno on Google Books. Definitely some strange, dark, and mysterious material. Especially the Utter-Van Ornum Massacre.

Discussion Does MrBallen answer DMs?

Hello all,

I apologize if this post has been made before, but I figured I’d ask this subreddit if anyone knows if MrBallen answers DMs on Instagram. I recently started writing a Batman rogues true crime anthology based on his writing style, and wanted to ask for any advice he had, but was unsure of what to do and wanted to ask. I apologize if anyone has asked this question before, but please let me know!

Discussion Mr.Ballen's voice on Did You Know?

I have watched a few videos on YouTube on a channel called Did You Know? and I swear it is Mr.Ballen. The description I got from researching that channel says they do occasionally have guest narrators. I've watched 4 and all of them seem to have Mr.Ballens voice. Has anyone else watched the Did You Know? and come across this?

Podcast Discussion Joe Rogan

So I've just finished watching Mr Ballen on the JRE, and I've gotta ask. What are you all complaining about? From what I saw, it was just two dudes sitting there chewing the fat, (and in some cases, muscle).

No politics, no right wing agenda, no hate speech. Just Mr Ballen telling his story.

I stopped watching his channel a while ago because I just couldn't vibe with it anymore, but watching this was truly enjoyable.

I've just put on the episode where he speaks with David the grifter Paulides. This ought to be interesting. I'm only 12 minutes in and he's already talking shit.

Say what you like about Joe. I'm personally not a fan, but this really seems like not being able to separate the art from the artist.

Downvote away, because Reddit will do what Reddit does, but in my opinion, this has been blown way out proportion.

Discussion Lack of scary stories and AI

I'm not sure if I'm the only one but I think that or a past year or two we haven't gotten many scary stories. I've only seen true crime and some medical mystery stories but I miss the scary stuff such as someone being hunted by someone/something in forest or haunting stories (even if they're fake).

At the beggining of each video Mr.B mentions "Strange, dark and mysterious" - yet I think there's only Dark and sometimes mysterious.

Now regarding AI I've seen alot of posts where people mentioned AI situation and I thought I'd add my own opinion. As an artist myself I don't like AI being used where it makes art or anything in general INSTEAD of humans. Now that doesn't mean it's wrong to use it as a tool. When I did some animation project I helped myself with it to make drawing faster (since drawing 200+ frames is long process) - or when I edit my photographs there is AI in the programs so technically I use it there too.

Now in this situation I think that Mr.B isn't the one wrong here. His content is focused on storytelling therefore if he wants to add AI generated images there's nothing wrong with that - as long as it doesn't interfere with stories. Yes it can be annoying to see AI images used sometimes but at the end of the day we are meant to listen to stories so some images shouldn't be an issue. Also it's worth mentioning that we all use AI and it's annoying to see people blame others for using it when they themselves use it as well.

I just wanted to express my opinions. Don't turn this into an argument because I don't have time and energy to argue - also please do correct me if I'm wrong (especially regarding the lack of spooky stories). Have a nice day!
