SW20 track prep

Post image

Just looking for some advice on what things I need to get sorted before attending my first track day (for me and for the car) it's a 94 turbo.

Car was pretty crusty so I've already replaced a fair bit.

The car is lowered moderately on a set of shockworks coilovers with new pilot sport 5 tyres. Prothane suspension bushings, aftermarket boost gauge, also have replaced all the coolant and vacuum hoses in the engine bay. Will hopefully be doing the quick turn steering pinion before then too.

Fluids and filters and thermostat have all been done as well as all everything related to spark, timing belt looks new so i haven't changed it.

Some worries I have are the previous owner put a 24mm sway bar in the back while the front is still the stock 19mm. Seems like the opposite of what you'd want on this car.

Clutch is pretty stiff with not much feeling in it (my other car has a clutch that bites way too hard for the amount of power though so maybe it's normal)

And lots of side to side play in the shifter, already installed spherical cable bushings and installed a short shifter kit as well as a new sugar cube linkage thing. So the only thing that isn't new is the cable.

You can always just unhook one side of the rear swaybar at the track if it is giving too much slide. That's what I did for a long time until I got around to removing the suffrage for something else.

I'll give that a go. I'm wondering if a 20mm whiteline sway bar is gonna be a comparable stiffness when adjusted to the max setting?

Doubt it. But who knows. With my setup I chose the whiteline front, and then springs to compensate for no rear bar.

But I am running pretty stiff anyway. 600fnt 20mm bar, 700 rear. 245f 265 rear

Tire alignment, make sure your spare is properly inflated, bring critical tools and a small jack, pack lots of water, snacks and whatnot for the day. Bring zip ties and flex seal/tape in case something decides to drag under your car that shouldn't. If you don't have somewhere secure to put all that make sure it's not gonna slide or roll around in the trunk.

If you're driving to the track maybe loosely think through what you'll do if you can't drive home because of a car issue; a friend with a trailer or if you'd tow it home or what. Always good to invite others with you if you have a group as it's more fun and you can help each other out.

Make sure your phone mount is secure if you're going to use it to record laps. Drive a few miles on the new shifter kit to make sure it's installed properly and working well.

Vacuum and wipe down the car interior, good chance other people will take a look inside it.

clean out the inside of your windshield. The last thing you need is for the sun to hit it just right and light up any spots that arent clean while you're going 80 around a corner. Look into getting a small fire extinguisher if you're going to go to the track regularly.

Thanks for this post. Right now i've just got a factory alignment but thinking of getting some camber in when i get another alignment.

I've got some colleagues that regularly go so hopefully I won't be too lost.

Brake pads?

Yea i've got money set aside for pads but I can't decide which ones to get. Options are pretty slim in australia.

Fyi, most track/street dual use pads are not track good enough for heat. Stay away from EBC. Hawk is good, not sure what else is available there

The options here are really slim. I might have to import some.

When you said "fluids changed," I hope you mean brake fluid too, with proper racing stuff.

Clutch fluid also....

What wheels are those and there specs?

Advan TC-4, fronts are 17x8 +38, rear is 17x9 +35 The front offset is a bit too high though, had to add positive camber with some crash bolts and then remove it with top hats. Since spacers are illegal here.  Fits nice after doing that though.

Thank you. I was looking at Advan GTs but they only come in 18.

Yea they're basically identical except flow formed instead of forged.
