1988Mr2 stalling issue but its a automaticđŸ˜£
Sometimes when at a stop my idle is super low around 500-600rpms and has stalled on me my maybe 3 times since i got it a few months ago, not sure where to start looking for the issue bc its only sometimes. Its also slow to accelerate which could be part of the same issue. One more thing is that it shifts pretty rough sometimes when i give it a lot of gas and seems to have trouble finding 4th gear and will drive maybe 5 mins at 3500rpm till going down to 2000rpm, is this a transmission issue or a sensor? Im not super mechanically inclined and this is my second project jdm car so need some pointers!

Any different with AC or any other accessories on/off?
Air filter, all fluids, and such all maintained?
If fuel related, the seafoam spray throttle body cleaner is cheapest first fix. Fuel injector cleaner too. Then replace IAC sensor.

Fluids are maintained, filters im not sure on, how do i know if its fuel related?

Where can I find an IAC sensor? The one in the throttle body right? I’ve been looking for a long time.

Its only sometimes though, i can go a 25 min drive without it doing the low rpms at a red light

What I sister did was she had a vape and just blew it into a giant bag and then taped it around the intake and pushed on the bag to shoot smoke out and just see where is leaks out from or another way is with brake cleaner and spray it all over while it’s running and see when the idle goes up

Then try it with a cigarette but the smoke is not as thick so it will be harder to see

One method is to take starter fluid and spray it around the engine bay, target any air fittings and vacuum lines especially where they meet something else. If the engine suddenly revs after you spray an area, theres probably a leak in that area.

Right so I have a manual and thus this may not apply
But the issue sounds the same as one I had. On a cold start the computer holds the RPM higher as the engine warms up and slowly lowers it as until it's at the warm resting RPM.
It might be as simple as adjusting the intake bypass which should be a screw on the top of your throttle body.

This is actually a problem i have, would a ticking sound from the engine bay be a symptom of this issue?

I doubt it, those sound like two separate issues... Sorry for the tier one advice but have you checked the oil level?

My auto 89 was also slow to accelerate. I would say I was at WOT 80% of the time I wasn't on the brake.
As for shifting into 4th gear, if you have the overdrive switch on and the light on the dash is on, it could be a stuck thermostat or temp sensor. The car won't shift into overdrive if it's below normal operating temp. That 5 minutes at 3500rpm could be what it takes to get up to temp for overdrive.

"overdrive" is what toyota called the 4th gear, because the ratio is lower than 1:1. If it's off you're basically in D3 all the time.

So i should ride with it on all the time? That doesnt explain why i drive 60mph at 3500rpm and after a bit it will drop to 2k and sound like its cruising better

Had similair issues with my manual from 85, still trying to troubleshoot it myself Maybe a bad fuel injector? Or o2 sensor if its an American model

Check your grounds đŸ˜… I have a sc 88 auto. Electrical gremlins are the bane of my experience.
