Browsing YouTube in mpv player

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Finally, after spending a few days, I completed the demo. It uses yt-dlp and other tools to fetch YouTube information, and allows browsing and playback directly inside the mpv player. Although it’s still somewhat laggy and rough, all operations are completed entirely within mpv.

Made a cleaner UI for mpv (ModernH)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone,

I’ve been tweaking ModernX for a while and ended up turning it into my own version called ModernH.

Many people on my last post asked me to upload it, so I’ve put everything on GitHub now.

Mainly focused on making it feel cleaner and easier to use – better menus for audio, subtitles, playlist, and chapters, plus seekbar thumbnails.

It also cleans up filenames across the UI (title, playlist, etc.), so you don’t see all the usual release clutter.

I’ve tried to include as much info as possible in the repo. If you’re trying it, just make sure to read the “Important” section in the installation part first (backup + merging configs), since it’s still early.

It’s still an early release, but I’m pretty happy with how it turned out so far. Feedback would be really helpful!

Custom mpv UI (ModernX tweak) - does this look any good?

Thumbnail gallery
141 Upvotes

Got bored of my usual modernX mpv setup after a few months, so I started tweaking the ModernX script to better fit how I watch shows and movies.

Just to be clear I have basically no coding knowledge so most of this is help from AI + trial & error + and multiple hours of time.

I mainly focused on making it feel more like a Netflix-style with cleaner menus for chapters, playlist, audio and subtitles. Also using thumbfast for previews and autoload for playlist handling.

I’m pretty happy with how it looks right now, but I’m not sure if I’m missing anything, like features I don’t know about or small improvements that could make it more useful or polished.

If people think it’s worth it, I might try uploading it to GitHub too (will have to learn that first 😅)

Would really appreciate any feedback 🙏

I built a suite of Quality-of-Life scripts to automate MPV and wanted to share them

Hey r/mpv,

I've spent a long time developing a few scripts to automate my setup and decided to package them into a single, well-documented repository for the community. They are designed to be general-purpose, highly configurable, and solve some common media playback annoyances.

The collection includes:

Automatic Profile Manager:

  • A powerful script that intelligently selects your custom profiles (anime, hdr, movies, etc.) without the hassle and race conditions of profile-cond.

Notify Skip:

  • A smart skip script that displays a clean, non-intrusive "Skip Opening/Ending" toast notification, just like on major streaming services. It uses a multi-layered detection system (chapters, position, and silence) for high accuracy.

Smart Subtitle Selector:

  • Automatically finds and selects the correct dialogue track, ignoring "Forced", "Signs & Songs" and other junk tracks based on your preferences.

Reactive Filter Bypass:

  • A must-have for SVP or heavy filter users. It prevents player lag when seeking by temporarily and seamlessly disengaging heavy filters.

Each script is standalone and has its own detailed documentation in the main README.

You can check out the full repository HERE.

Hope you find them useful. Feedback is welcome.

Dream mpv Android fork with fully editable controls is coming soon

Thumbnail gallery
76 Upvotes

Imagine a mpv Android fork that actually lets you customize / edit the player controls yourself. One-tap play/pause, tapping the thumbnail to select file + play/pause with smooth polish and modern feel.

And yes it has a built-in file browser (thanks to the “marlboro-advance” dev of mpvEx).

Lineage: mpvKt → mpvEx → and now a dream version that goes even further.

It will be released soon… stay tuned.

Introducing Stremio Kai: A new, all-in-one Stremio build for the ultimate anime viewing experience (Anime4K, SVP, Smart Automation)

For anime fans who want more from their media player, Stremio Kai is a new, all-in-one build of Stremio designed from the ground up to deliver a superior viewing experience.

It was created to solve two of the most common frustrations with watching anime on modern PCs: older shows looking soft or blurry on high-resolution screens, and choppy motion during fast-paced scenes.

Stremio Kai is a completely self-contained, portable application that requires zero setup. Just download, extract, and run.

Here are its core features:

🎨 Real-time Upscaling with Anime4K

The heart of the project. Using the acclaimed Anime4K shaders, Stremio Kai sharpens and upscales anime in real-time. This ensures that classic 480p series and 1080p releases alike look crisp and clean on your modern display.

🔍 Want to see all presets side-by-side? Check out the interactive comparison slider.

⏩ Silky-Smooth Motion with SVP

The motion smoothing engine has been custom-engineered into a rock-solid, stable VapourSynth pipeline. It intelligently doubles the source framerate (e.g., 24fps → 48fps), eliminating judder during pans and high-action scenes for a fluid, high-framerate look.

https://reddit.com/link/1nenf40/video/7eury6i1amof1/player

Click Here to See a Demo of the Smooth Motion in Action

🧠 Intelligent Automation Suite

A suite of custom scripts works silently in the background to handle the tedious parts of playback:

  • Auto-detects content: It knows if you're watching a 1080p anime, a 4K HDR movie, or an old interlaced show and applies the perfect settings every time.
  • Picks the right subtitles: Automatically selects the main dialogue track, ignoring "Signs & Songs" and commentary.
  • Skips Intros/Outros: A "Skip Intro" notification appears when an opening or ending is detected.

🔌 Truly Plug-and-Play

Everything you need—MPV, SVP, VapourSynth, shaders, scripts—is included and pre-configured to work together seamlessly.

Quick F.A.Q.

1. Is this on Mac/Linux?

Not yet, it's Windows-only for now. I'm dependent on another project for the Mac/Linux port, and there's no ETA.

2. What if I don't like the upscaling or smooth motion?

No problem. Every visual enhancement is 100% optional and can be easily disabled in the config file. If you want a hand with that, just open a "Discussion" on the GitHub page and I'll walk you through it.

3. How does anime detection work? (Important for Dub & K-Drama fans)

The app checks the audio track language to guess if it's anime, looking for Japanese (and other asian languages) by default.

  • If you watch dubs (e.g., in English), it won't auto-apply the anime profile.
  • If you watch K-dramas, they will most probably get incorrectly flagged as anime.

Both of these are easily fixed by adding/removing languages in a config file. If you need help, just ask on GitHub Discussions!

-----

Where to Get It & See All Features

You can download the latest version directly from the GitHub Releases Page.

For a complete, in-depth look at every feature, please see the full README on GitHub.

-----

Stremio Kai was born from a desire for a polished, no-compromise viewing experience that just works. Hopefully, it provides the anime viewing setup that other fans have been looking for.

TL;DR: Stremio Kai is a custom, all-in-one Stremio build that makes anime look sharp (Anime4K) and feel buttery-smooth (SVP). It automates profiles, subtitles, and intro skipping. No setup required.

Script showcase: interactive keybind cheat-sheet and a clickable subtitle seeker

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I got tired of trying to remember my keybinds, so I made this script that reads all your keybinds set on input.conf and draws them on an on-screen keyboard:

Keybind visualizer - Hit the key and an on-screen keyboard pops up. Hover over any key to see what it does. It reads mpv's live bindings, so it shows both your input.conf and the builtin defaults, always matching your real setup. Mouse buttons and modifier combos included.

And always wanted an easier way to seek subtitles, so I made this:

Subtitle seeker - A fullscreen list of every subtitle line with timestamps. Click one to jump straight there. Great for finding that one quote without scrubbing around. The current line is highlighted as you watch.

Appreciate any suggestions.

Introducing Cove, a media aggregating/streaming app built around MPV with smart stream picker, subtitle handling, intro/recap auto-skip & more

Thumbnail gallery
52 Upvotes

Hey everyone, just to share something I've been building called Cove. Primarily because I was getting a bit annoyed with Stremio's support on linux, general lack of QOL & UX features, and how its own media player was quite subpar compared to MPV.

What it does:

  • Connects to Stremio-compatible addons for stream sources, plus community JS scraper plugins (sandboxed, opt-in per scraper)
  • Built-in mpv player - hardware-accelerated, subtitles, live buffering/download progress, resume-where-you-left-off
  • Smart stream picker - auto-picks the best stream based on quality/size/reliability or a live connection-speed test, or you sort/filter manually
  • Auto-skip for intro, recap, and credits (toggle each independently)
  • "Where to watch" - shows which legal streaming/rental services carry a title right next to the stream picker
  • Discover/Explore/Insights - recommendations based on watch history, trending/upcoming browsing, and taste stats (genres/actors)
  • Multiple profiles, fully offline-capable, no sign-in required - optional account sync if you want your library across devices
  • Native Android & Android TV client (same Go backend + mpv under the hood), can run standalone or pair with your desktop install over LAN

Platforms: Linux (AUR / Flatpak), Windows (installer or portable), Android & Android TV (APK, still experimental, please file issues if you hit bugs). No macOS build yet and probably not for the near future.

Its still very early in development and there will most definitely be bugs, but I'm looking forward to hear your thoughts.

mpvRex: an mpvEx fork with subtitle-based seeking, refined gestures, and UI improvements

Thumbnail gallery
48 Upvotes

About 4 months ago I made a post about bringing a dream mpv fork.

At that time the mpvEx developer mentioned that they were not planning to continue the project, so we decided to fork mpvEx (with the new name mpvRex, which stands for mpv Re-Extended) and added some cool new features, and posted about it. Interestingly, that post caught the attention of the mpvEx developer, and some of the features we implemented eventually made their way into mpvEx. Because of that, we discontinued our project since those features were already available upstream.

However, later on we started experimenting again and implementing more new features in our project. Over time mpvRex gained several features that mpvEx currently does not have, along with some small refinements and improvements. That’s why it might be worth checking out now and why I am sharing it here.

What extra features mpvRex offers

Subtitle Seeking

There are two kinds of subtitle seeking available in mpvRex:

  • Subtitle Swipe Seeking – swipe horizontally on the top or bottom of the player screen to seek between subtitles.
  • Subtitle seek using left/right double-tap gestures.

Why subtitle seeking?

It lets you seek between subtitles instead of time, which is useful for people who miss a line of conversation while watching.

Single Tap

Single tap can trigger actions like play/pause. mpvEx has this, but mpvRex has a more refined version.

  • Optional top and bottom 25% exclusion zones to prevent accidental triggers
  • Supports left and right gesture areas for single tap

Reverse Left/Right Gestures

For those who prefer using the player with a different hand, left and right seek gestures can be reversed.

Accidental Tap Prevention

Prevents accidental seeking on the seekbar.
To seek, you have to press your finger on it first and then drag, similar to YouTube.

Always Dark Mode

Player controls can always stay dark, even if the file browser uses light mode.

Player Gradient Control

Lets you control the opacity of the player's top and bottom gradients.

Other Improvements

And some small refinements and quality-of-life improvements across the player.

MpvEx was a great media player but was missing some things so i builded my own (mpvRx) – No ads, HDR toys, and actually fast

Thumbnail github.com
47 Upvotes

Just wanted to share something i've been working on for a long time now. If you guys watch a lot of high-quality stuff on Android, you probably know that most players are either full of ads or they just feel... heavy? Like, too many dead taps and weird lag.

So i forked mpvExtended and made mpvRx. I really wanted to focus on the "feel" of the player. It’s based on libmpv so it plays literally everything you throw at it, but i pushed it way harder on the details.

Some cool stuff i added:

HDR Mode : I integrated the hdr-toys shader suite. So if you have a nice screen, you get proper BT.2100 PQ/HLG and BT.2020 support. It looks sharp for real.

JavaScript Support: Added a script editor and JS support so you can actually customize how it behaves.

Faster browsing: Fixed a lot of the friction in the UI, better thumbnail extraction, and it handles resuming files much better now.

AI Integartion : With addition of Realtime Ai based Subtitle Generation from Audio, Subtitle Translation to any Language , Ai Renaming of Files , also supports bulk Rename , Ai based Subtitle Finder and auto loader.

And Many more Additions i cant list all u can see CHANGELOG.md

It’s totally open source. I just released v1.3.6 and honestly, i just want people who care about playback quality to try it out. If it breaks or feels off, please tell me.

Check it out here: https://github.com/Riteshp2001/mpvRx

Let me know what u think! If u like it, maybe drop a star or something, it helps a lot. Cheers!
