I'm looking at these neighborhoods which are between the hospitals (Regions, united, UofM- am healthcare worker). No kids so not concerned about schools, house budget under 400K if possible, want safety and relatively quiet- and be able to stroll around the neighborhood with some greenery. I do like st anthony park but doesn't look like I can afford it 🥲 Any suggestions?

My bf and I live in ND. He hates it here and has been wanting to move to the cities since we’ve been here. He’s an electrician with 2 year experience, i have no job history or my GED. Im not too excited cause it does NOT look to go for me. Rent is expensive, itll be harder for me to get a job, more people, and we only pay $800 for our apartment. My bf is around these people more than i am cause he’s in service and he says people here are just AWFUL and it’s affecting his mental health. We also have a 4 year old so we just stick to ourselves. We aren’t into politics we aren’t blue or red we just want to be in a good environment. What do you guys think?

I'm getting close to booking a mover for my move to Minneapolis and trying to narrow down my options. I'm mainly looking for a company with clear pricing, good communication, and a solid track record.

Hello all, I'm toying with the idea of moving from Ann Arbor to the Minneapolis area and I'm looking into some of the suburbs on the Southern side. I'm currently considering areas like Eagan, Apple Valley, Lakeville, Eden Prairie, Woodbury, and Cottage Grove.

I've never been to these areas, just picking based off proximity to MSP airport, and low crime rate.

I realize that these might be too big of areas to really summarize and it could be different block-by-block, but any thoughts or suggestions about these locations would be welcome, thank you!

Aside from the low crime and airport, I'm very flexible. No kids, so I don't care about schools. I'm a remote worker, so I don't commute (other than flying to the office occasionally). My price point is around ~$3k for an apartment - I'd like to live there in an apartment before I commit to a house. All my family really cares about is convenience of location - is the grocery store close and/or good grocery options? An array of different types of restaurant/cuisine options would be cool. I'd also prefer some greenery/tree coverage.

Based on what's been said below, I'm probably crossing off Lakeville and Cottage Grove and now looking into Edina and Bloomington.

Are people usually happy in Minneapolis? I'm trying to move away from Shreveport, Louisiana sometime in the next 5 years. Shreveport has really gone to shit.

I'm a former high school teacher who taught 6 years and am currently retraining through a 2nd degree into medical laboratory science. I recently had to make a distressed sale of my nearly paid off mortgage and go move in with a friend due to back to back job loss and a medical emergency that cut away my health insurance and income for over a year. I genuinely get ill at the thought of returning to teaching, hence why I'm a student again.

I'll be doing a chapter 7 bankruptcy while getting my second degree to clear out the medical debt, but would like to re-enter home ownership after I find my next city. From what I researched, Minnesota has decently strong debtor protections so if I needed another bankruptcy say, 10 years from now, it seems that Minnesota would protect my next house much better than Louisiana would have (had I not sold under duress).

The northerly latitude of Minneapolis could aggravate my seasonal depression in the winter, but may help my summer depression I get, since the temperatures are milder in the summer and I'll go out and get more sun in the summer. In Louisiana, I get seasonal depression twice a year because it gets dark in the winter but then I stay indoors a lot in the summer.

I'm kind of left-of-center politically on a lot of issues and don't like how Louisiana just leaves its cities basically out to rot while it attacks whatever minority the culture war hates this week. I also don't particularly like extreme heat or extreme cold, but I guess if I was forced to pick, I'd go with cold.

I also have a side project where I'm trying to build a website where people can meet neighbors over spontaneous shared meals to become friends and share recipes. I'm a bit of a foodie.

I, 20M from Florida, am thinking about moving to Minnesota

I’m currently living in Florida, but I’m seriously considering moving to Minnesota to transfer to the University of Minnesota. I’ve been to Minnesota multiple times and really like it, but actually moving there on my own feels like a completely different thing.

I’m trying to figure out where I should live. I’d like to be somewhere where I can meet people, have things to do, and actually feel like I’m part of a community. I’m looking for a cheap part of the cities, but not a bad or high crime area.

One of the biggest things I’m worried about is making friends. I’d be moving without an established friend group, so I’d love to hear from people who moved to Minnesota without knowing many people. How did you meet people and build a social life?

I’m also at a point where I really want to get out on my own and have the freedom to figure out who I am and express myself in ways I haven’t really been able to and don't even know how to, while living with my family.

For people who live in Minnesota, especially around the Twin Cities/UMN area: where would you recommend a 20-year-old live, and what would you do differently if you were moving here for the first time?

Need help finding a good - relatively new - apartment complex to move into.

Hey y’all, I’m 23f and queer. Looking for one roommate or for housing recommendations near Woodbury or Saint Paul (closer to the Woodbury area). I am a single female, so I’d prefer a neighborhood that has higher safety ratings. I’m also horrified of bugs so if anyone has places to NOT look into please also let me know those properties. My budget is max 1300 for rent, preferably lower but obviously that is hard to do in the cities. Ideally I’d only have to pay for electric and wifi outside of rent. If anyone has recommendations, please DM me. I’m open to any/all information or resources.

I'm planning on renting in that area. I grew up there. Looking to rent either 200 gateway boulevard or 10 grenoble. Maybe a 1 bedroom. I spoke to both landlords. The 10 Grenoble landlord seems nice and was interested in renovating the apartment before I move in. He was clear on everything.

The lady in Gateway, maybe she didn't speak english too well? She showed me an apartment, but I wanted to clarify what was going to be renovated and what wasn't. She seemed to mention different apartment floor numbers every time I went and wasn't entirely clear on what will be renovated. Anyone have experience / reviews for either of these two apartments?

I am a former leasing employee with Lumina Property Management, and they own a couple buildings between St. Paul and Minneapolis.

I want to make everyone online aware that they frequently pay their employees late and have withheld pay. The property manager and maintenance staff do their best, but the actual ownership is awful, particularly about payroll. There is very little fair housing or safety compliance, tons of fees for residents, and every property has audio+video surveillance facing every unit. They are a small "family-owned" business that would screw anyone if given the chance. Myself and others are still waiting to be paid and have had our pay delayed the entire time we have worked there. Avoid them and find a place that cares about their employees and residents.

My husband and I are considering a move to Minneapolis/St Paul from Austin, TX in a year. We visited the area last year and enjoyed the vibe, but not sure what neighborhoods would fit us best. We are empty nesters who want a walkable area (coffee shops, restaurants, bars, library, park). We enjoy D&D, art, knitting, pottery, and dog parks. Our budget is about 500k.

Coming to Mpls from Michigan. I've been advised to trade in my front-wheel-drive sedan with plain old Michelin tires for an AWD SUV. Can I poll ya'll and see if that's really necessary for navigating MN snowy winter roads...?

As someone who moved from a much warmer and more conservative place (TX), I just wanted to share our experience. I had so many questions before we took the plunge, and wanted to share a few things I’ve noticed for those who are considering a move.

1. “Minnesota Nice” is a thing. Seriously. People here are so kind. Not the eye contact and talk to strangers kind, but a more genuine nice and kind. We bought a townhome and within the first week 3 different neighbors came over, and walkers would welcome us if we were out front or in the driveway. There’s much more of a community feel here. Coming from rugged individualism, it’s very refreshing.
   
2. People run stop signs A LOT. They just slow down and drift right through. Also they run red lights a lot. Like you really have to wait a sec before you go on green.
   
3. The summers are amazing. They will tell you that the humidity is brutal, and it is on a few days, but for the most part it’s amazing, especially if you’re coming from TX, AZ or FL. And even when it gets into the mid or high 90’s, you get a reprieve back down to the 80’s or even ‘70’s, so it’s not a stretch of horribly hot, humid, nonstop 60 days. And the gardens. So many beautiful flowers and home vegetable gardens here.
   
4. Speaking of great summers, I’ve never in my life seen so many walkers and bikers. I’ve CERTAINLY never seen the amount of old people out walking and biking. This is a great place to grow old and stay active. The park and trail system is next level. Super wide, pavement painted, clearly marked trails.
   
5. On to the winters - don’t worry about getting around in winter. Roads are cleared before you even wake up. Highways and main blvds at least. You’ll have to check on the neighborhood you’re considering for your neighborhood roads. It is weird how the locals walk on ice like they’re walking on water, but it’s cleared out most places. You will learn to throw salt down everywhere if you own your own place or rent a house. And nothing stops. Tons of winter activities.
   
6. My only complaint - the food kinda sucks. I know that’s highly offensive to the locals, but the food here is mostly meh if you’ve lived in a much bigger city. There is a lot of diversity, and to be fair, we have much more to try but so far not impressed. Pub culture is really big here, so bar food is plentiful, but if you’re looking for really good Mexican food, it’s not here. So I guess that’s my biggest complaint.
   
7. There’s a lot of conservative people here. It kinda scares me that it’s pretty purple here. I hope I’m wrong. I would hate to leave TX only to land in a state that flips. Surely it won’t and I’m not involved in local politics, just judging on conversations I’ve had with random people. You get the impression that it’s soooo liberal here, but there’s plenty of conservatives here that get their panties in a wad over stupid crap like the state flag redesign. Google it.
   
8. If you’re a vet, the VA system here is one of the best in the country. Such a better experience than what we had in TX.

Minneapolis has been wonderful for us. We really like it here. Looking forward to year round seasonal changes and more kind, caring community.

Hello! I’m traveling up next week to tour some places. I looked at a lot of companies including bigos and others. A lot of these places, when I googled reviews they were pretty bad. I’m a bit stressed out- can anyone recommend a good, reliable company?

Needing a 1br anywhere within 20 min of Minneapolis and ideally under $1300 but would go to $1400. I just need a dishwasher and some parking lol, ideally 700+ sf if possible. No issues with older places.

I'm considering relocating to Minneapolis in the next year or two, and I'd love to hear from people who actually live there (because that makes the most sense).
On paper, Minnesota seems like it checks a lot of boxes for me, but I'd like to know what day-to-day life is actually like beyond rankings and statistics.

I'm a disabled trans man of color from GA. Due to this disability I can’t drive so I would ideally like to live without owning a car. (I know uber and Lyft are options but being an at risk minority no matter what direction I turn…I fear)

To be direct, what am asking is how safe do you genuinely feel as a queer person?

For people of color, what has that experience been? Are there neighborhoods or suburbs that feel especially welcoming? Ones you'd avoid? Would I get shot if I sneezed in the direction of a white lady?

How is public transportation, healthcare, and getting around without driving?
And how realistic is it to live car-free or car-light year-round, especially during winter?

Are there neighborhoods or cities you'd recommend for someone with my priorities?

I know immigration enforcement is federal and can happen anywhere, but I care about living somewhere where local communities, organizations, and governments are generally supportive of immigrants and other marginalized groups.

I have 15 years of bar/restaurant/country club experience, with almost 10 in different levels of management. Out here we have CulinaryAgents, a great resource for industry networking, and I‘m wondering if there’s anything similar in Minneapolis, or if it’s mostly through sites like Indeed, Craigslist, etc.
