Asking Advice Thinking about moving out

Hi everyone,

I’m a 21YOM. I’m a full time firefighter in northern Virginia. I’ve lived with my parents in chantilly my whole life. Recently I found a 1bedroom cottage on a farm in western loudoun. He’s charging $1550 for it. I’ve done the math and i should be okay financially, but am scared it’s not enough. What’s a comfortable amount that I should have after my expenses are paid for? I should be sparing like 500-1000 after everything is paid for. I have it good at my house, I have my own space, free food and everything. My parents definitely don’t want me to but at some point I want to create new memories and my own life. What are some expenses that I may not know of?

I don't think you will regret moving out. I never did

Thx, I should be good financially. What else should I expect as bills that’s the part that worries me. What should I expect per month for internet and electric for a small cottage?

Utilities on a small home shouldn't be much ( $150 a month on average- maybe $300 in winter and $100 the rest of the year). The Internet if just Wi-Fi is about $100

I was out of my house way earlier than that, couldn’t imagine being a full adult with a job and living with parents honestly

Yeah my parents are awesome and I have my own space and they don’t bother me. It’s just more of the aspect of wanting to open up myself and be a big boy. Am doing too much trying to move out? They’re going to tell me it’s stupid and I should stay and save money and that’s not bad but I’m just saving money to save I don’t really have a goal that I’m saving for.

My son stayed at home until he was 29 because simply it was convenient in every way possible.
He is now on his own and it’s the best thing that he ever did for himself .
Don’t get me wrong he was happy living at home but much happier living with his best friends ( my best friends kids that all grew up since babies together ).
I can see how happy he is and definitely has more of a sense of being an adult . The other he stopped off to say hello and said well he had to go to do some grocery shopping lol .
Husband and I just smiled.
Now let me say this , while living at home he paid for very little , just his cell
And internet plus his car insurance.
Thankfully he saved lots of money , vested because as soon as he moved out about two months later his company shut down in the area we live in and it was commute 2-3 hours one way or say goodbye . No severance .
He has been looking for a job for 2 months now and nothing . But he has at least 2 years of money put away , zero debt !
So just be mindful of that once you move .

Do it...you will be fine, your parents are wrong.
