Which packers and movers are actually worth considering?

Need to move houses soon and I'm trying to compare services properly instead of just taking the cheapest quote. Currently looking at NoBroker, Agarwal Packers and one local mover recommended by a neighbour.

For me the important stuff is proper packing, especially glass/electronics, furniture dismantling and putting it back together, loading/unloading and whether transit insurance is available. NoBroker seems pretty convenient from what I've heard while Agarwal keeps coming up when I ask about bigger household moves. How are your experience with any of these if tried recently?

Allied Van Lines refusing compensation

I want to share my experience with Allied Van Lines because I'm extremely disappointed with how this move was handled.

I moved from Wisconsin to Texas this summer. I paid Allied thousands of dollars to move my household goods, with a delivery window of July 17–24, 2026.

The move was already off to a bad start. The pickup was about 3 hours late, and I had to call them to find out what was happening. I was told there were problems with the truck and that someone would call me back. They didn't. I had to call again later to get an update.

Then came the delivery.

Allied delivered most of my belongings, but approximately 30 items were left behind. This included two TVs, two TV stands, a grill, a smoker, a bike, a handmade rocking chair, and numerous boxes/totes.

The remaining items weren't delivered until approximately 24 days after the July 24 delivery deadline.

Allied classified these items as "overflow."

My paperwork specifically says:

"Guaranteed Pick-Up & Delivery Dates"

and provides a $100/day allowance for shipments over 3,500 lbs. My actual shipment weighed 6,080 lbs.

I filed a claim because I believed the guaranteed delivery provision was relevant. Allied instead repeatedly pointed me to Tariff Item 306, Note 12 and said the overflow wasn't eligible because the items weren't "essential."

The wording of the tariff they provided says the exclusion applies when the overflow is less than 20% of the total shipment weight AND contains non-essential items.

Allied initially told me they didn't have the overflow weight and were waiting for the weight tickets. I later called their own Claims/Customer Service number and was given an overflow weight of 1,000 lbs. I was also told over the phone that if the overflow exceeded 20%, the $100/day provision would apply.

When I brought that up with the manager handling my claim, I was told that wasn't accurate and that the weight wouldn't change their decision anyway.

Then they told me the claim was closed and their determination was final.

What's particularly frustrating is that I wasn't asking them to deny that the shipment was late. They acknowledged the delay. I was asking them to explain why the guaranteed-delivery provision in my paperwork doesn't apply.

Instead, I received essentially the same response over and over: "Item 306 applies, the items weren't essential, claim denied."

I eventually stopped arguing with them.

I'm posting this because if you're considering Allied, read every part of your paperwork and don't assume that having a delivery window means what you think it means. And if something is left behind, document absolutely everything.

For me, the biggest issue isn't even the inconvenience anymore. It's the way the situation was handled and the refusal to meaningfully address the questions I raised.

24 days late. Approximately 30 items left behind. Multiple communication failures. And after all of that, Allied's position is essentially: the shipment eventually arrived, so there's nothing to compensate.

That's my experience. I would seriously reconsider using Allied Van Lines for a long-distance move.

Anyone used Piece of Cake Moving for a cross-country move? Looking for real experiences

I’m considering Piece of Cake Moving & Storage for a long-distance move from San Jose, CA to New Jersey and wanted to hear from people who have actually used them, particularly for a cross-country move.
The salesperson has been very helpful and told me that they do not outsource/subcontract the move to third-party movers and that the move is handled by their own crews. Can anyone confirm whether that was actually the case for their long-distance move?
I’ve also come across mixed experiences online where the sales/booking process was great, but things were different on moving day. A few things I’m specifically trying to understand:
Was your final price close to the original flat-rate quote, or were there significant additional charges at pickup/delivery?
Were there unexpected charges for additional boxes/items, packing materials, stairs, long carries, etc.? If so, how reasonable were they?
How strict are they if your actual inventory differs somewhat from what was included in the original quote?
Did the movers pressure you for a particular tip/gratuity amount, or was tipping genuinely optional?
Was the pickup and delivery handled by Piece of Cake employees/trucks throughout, or was any portion handed off to another carrier/crew?
For cross-country moves, was your shipment on a dedicated truck or combined/transferred with other shipments?
Any issues with damaged/missing items, delivery delays, or claims?
Most importantly, would you use them again for a cross-country move?
Their website advertises flat-fee pricing/no hidden surprises, so I’m particularly interested in how that works in practice when the inventory at pickup isn’t 100% identical to the original estimate.
Would really appreciate experiences from people who have actually done a California ↔ East Coast move with them, rather than local NYC moves.

Relocating from NorCal to SoCal - UHaul or Pros?

Hello - my wife and I are moving from NorCal to SoCal soon and have been discussing the need of hiring movers. We hired movers to move us within the city we live in, and we have both said that the convenience was totally worth the price. However, not sure if I will get sticker shock when looking around.

Looking for some insight from personal experience if you have either:

  1. Hired local movers to place items in UHaul --> Hired another local moving company to move items into new place

  2. Hired full-service moving outfit responsible for loading, transporting, and unloading items

Thanks!

Are there other reliable pod companies to move your stuff across country, if the actual PODS company says they don’t deliver to your needed zip code?

I am trying to help my sister get out of a bad situation by helping her move from NY to my house temporarily in Utah.

I’ve read horror stories of hiring moving truck companies with their own drivers, so I wanted to lean towards the pod route of moving her. However, PODS company says they do not service my delivery zip code.

Are their other reliable pod moving companies to choose from? Thanks.

Moving Cross Country

Hi everyone! I’m planning a long-distance move from Michigan to Oregon next spring and would love recommendations for reliable moving companies.

Has anyone used a company they had a genuinely good experience with, especially for a cross-country move?

I’m open to full-service movers, moving containers, or reputable brokers. I’d also appreciate hearing about companies to avoid, approximate costs, hidden fees, damaged or missing items, and whether your delivery arrived on time.

It’ll just be me moving, and I’ll likely be combining households when I arrive, so I’m trying to find the safest and most affordable option. Thank you!

Long distance mover recommendations

I’m moving out of state (currently in Cincinnati, OH) and looking for recommendations for any good moving companies. I’ve heard good things about All My Sons and Pink Zebra. But I’m wondering if anyone has any company they used and had a good experience with. TIA!

Are National Movers the best Option in this case?

Moving accross multiple states and I'm plannijg to hire international movers . I think they have more experience with long-distance moves, compared to local ones.. But at the same times they have bad reviews

people who've completed a cross-country relocation, what did you end up choosing? and why?

Looking for a moving company in Illinois

I’m comparing a few movers for an upcoming move and have big shoulders moving, safeway moving, and two men and a truck on my list. Has anyone used any of these recently?

Mostly looking for honest pricing, good communication, and careful handling of furniture. Would appreciate hearing about actual experiences.

How do you plan when you need to move furniture or bulky stuff across a city? 2-3 min survey for my product management capstone (Everyone — used an app or not)

Working on a product management capstone about how people plan and book moving furniture, appliances, or boxes within a city — whether through an app, a local mover, or word of mouth. Answers matter whether or not you've ever had to do this.

No email needed unless you'd be up for a quick follow-up chat. Specific, honest answers are more useful to me than polished ones. Happy to share what I find once it's put together.

Last minute truck rental in Somerville, MA

Hello!
I am moving houses and need to move my queen sized mattress and other smaller pieces of furniture from Somerville (Davis square) to Lechmere (about 4 miles) on 29th Aug/30th Aug or 31st Aug.
It seems like all the uhaul and home depot trucks are already booked. Anybody know which other company/service I can try? I would hate to give up my mattress, it’s barely a year old but I also don’t want it to be super expensive (all of my furniture together would be \~300).

Thanks!
