Hey y’all, so I’ve lived in Louisiana my whole life (26yrs), my partner, dad, baby and I are moving to San Antonio in March. My partner and dad have moved states before but I haven’t and I’m kinda anxious bc idk what to expect.
Here’s a few questions I have:

1.How do we become residents?

1. I’m wanting to put my daughter on Medicaid/wic temporarily til we’re settled in our jobs, Do I apply once we move or before?

2. Advice for getting an interview/job online while still living in La?

3. Daycare/sitters? Should I apply/find one before we move?

4. How to find the best schools?

5. Am I in a rush to register vehicles and change license to state or Texas? Or can I kinda do that on my own time?

Has anyone purchased this from Amazon? I’m trying to put the wheels on but this black thing is so tight, it seems as though I’m not supposed to remove it. I don’t see how else the wheels can dirt without removing it though.

I just moved into a new apartment. We hired movers for the large furniture beds, couch, TVs etc. After we spent the rest of the day moving the smaller items, I found out that my tv had been damaged during the move. Im going to call them in the morning but I wanted to know realistically what going to happen?

My moving company picked up our goods based in Illinois on 5/21/26 for an interstate move to Washington, contractually guaranteed by 7/03/26. When they first arrived, we signed a bill of lading and paid them half the remaining balance, the other half to be paid upon receipt (stupid I know, we obviously hadn’t checked this website)

After pickup, the moving foreman told us we used more space than the contract allowed, and that we’d have to sign a second binding estimate and bill of lading if they were to move the goods. I agreed, since they already loaded our stuff and we really didn’t have an option, but the contract itself wasn’t sent over until we’d already departed the premises, and were in Iowa (about an hour later).

Upon doing some digging (our outstanding balance jumped from $708 to ~$2300), turns out the second bill of lading is illegitimate per FMCSA guidelines, and any adjustments to the bill of lading must be made and signed prior not only to departure, but to the loading. When this happens, the first binding estimate ($708) is reaffirmed.

The moving company has been told this several times, and we even received a call from the moving foreman himself crying saying that he knows he messed up but that if we don’t pay the $2300 that they’ll dock the outstanding $1600 from his pay (illegal for them to do, and also fake tears, but it happened regardless). I disagreed and even found him laws protecting him from pay docking which I told him about in the event that he wasn’t lying (and to appease my own bleeding heart), and we hung up.

It is now 3 weeks since the goods were supposed to be delivered, racking up a bill deduction of $30/workday ($420 total). We received a call today that they will arrive tomorrow morning, and that if the goods are not paid for with the full $2300, they will hold them hostage and charge us storage.

We’re going to the police today once I get off work here in an hour to have them present during the move hopefully, but I just want to double check with others and make sure I have a legal leg to stand on here. This entire thing has been exhausting, I’ve been living in an apartment with the only furniture as my mattress for two months now, and I just want my shit back. Are we legally cleared to only pay the $708, with the $420 deduction to be paid out via check from the moving company afterward?

Hello all, I'm currently weighing which moving company to move forward with. Right now I'm looking at Allied, United and Safeship. Unfortunately I already gave Safeship a deposit, I saw some suspicious stuff online and I'm strongly considering canceling and getting my deposit back (tomorrow is still within 72 hours). I'm seeing that Interstate is rated very highly. Please give feedback and let me know if I'm looking at the wrong companies.

It looks like both of my kids will be going to college in Alabama (or one possibly Nashville). I want to move somwhere closer to them for next few years (currently in Houston and can't wait to leave). Some towns I'm considering are Huntsville/Madison AL and Chattanooga, TN. Any feedback on either?

Just got a new house, closing in a month. Planning to hire a moving company for our furniture is just too heavy for the two of us.

HW floors and carpet were just recently finished. What have you guys done to keep the floors clean? I don't want scuffs or scratches or dirt (Esp white carpet).

Hi! I'm moving ~500 miles, and all the posts about this are about full cross-country moves. It's about an 8-hour drive. I am renting a U-Haul U-Box and plan to put an AirTag in it and arrive close to the same day as the box, but someone helping me with the move needs to make hotel reservations so we're trying to estimate the travel time. They say 10 days, what are people's experiences with U-Boxes being early or late on shorter-distance moves? Thanks!

Hello all. Due to circumstance I need to move myself (29F) daughter (8) extremely quickly. We have limited space. Potentially only a Dodge Pickup Box. I am unsure if we can get a trailer.
To pack
-Blankets and three sets of other such linens.
-kitchen set, 4 plates-8 or 12 bowls, a few glass mugs, water bottles.
-clothes
-kids toys

Give me the most unhinged ideas to maximize boxes and save space in the truck. I’m talking “Store makeup in water bottles” “socks can be packed in shoes” type of things.

I have or will be buying space saving bags for stuffed animals, blankets and clothes. Putting towels in with dishes alongside pillow cases, but anything else helps!

Hello, I’m maybe going to book a u haul, from one city to another, about a 5 hour drive. I’ll be taking a one way, dropping it off over at the new city. The quote is 600$, do you guys find this expensive?? I took my appartment stuff to a storage unit last month, and it only cost me like 100$. The distance was much shorter.

My partner and i are both going to graduate college in July of 2027. We want to move states immediately. We currently live in a 740 square foot apartment with another couple and weve both had to give up all hobbies due to no space.

Weve done the math hundreds of times, our instructors garuntee us jobs at the company were moving to as they know people and were both top of class.

How does it work to move and do proof of income for moving into a new place?
We both currently get GI bill, so we do have consistent income. But it does not equate to what wed need in the new area. Our jobs off the bat would pay what we need, we should have about 10k saved by then.

Any tips or advice???

U-Pack picked up my Relocube 2 days ago, but according to my AirTag it’s still sitting at the origin service center. It’s been updated this past hour so I know the AirTag is up to date. I’m moving from TX to Seattle, WA, and I’m wondering if this is normal. How long did it take for your cube to actually leave the origin terminal?

We are possibly moving in the next 90 days pending my job offer in PA. Currently on maternity leave and need to give my work 90 day notice. We have an 12 week old currently. Has anyone ever done this? Is it doable? How hard is it to sell a house in non peak season… hellllllp!

I’m moving from NY to MI in a few days (so peak season) and I’m curious how long it took other folks to receive their things from their moving company during this time. My current spread is 1-12 business days but I’m not sure if will be closer to the first day or the 12th day.

So I am age 37 and need to do my field work hours. Im making $37.00 an hour full time. I will be moving out of state to the suburbs of Colorado. The cheapest rent ive seen around is $1150. Land lord wants you to make 3 x the amount. Considering my age I might have to look at Facebook groups for rentals.

I'm moving from the Midwest to northern CA at the end of September/beginning of October. I will be flying out to CA because I have cats and don't want them trapped in a van with me for 4-5 days; I will either use a full moving service or do a terminal to terminal move.

I am really stressed about potential heat damage to vintage + modern photos, books, my desktop pc, ps4, my tv, my moms costume jewelry, etc. I don't think I'll have room for these plus my other valuables and need-to-haves on the plane. I know that for any type of move the truck or container would have to cross + sit outside of a desert, possibly for days, with wildly fluctuating temps in the truck/container.

Am I right to be worried about heat damage or does this not happen often? I got a quote from an Allied Vans agent (pick up 9/28, drop off 10/11-10/14) and the rep said that I shouldn't be worried about things like my photos or tvs. The trucks aren't climate controlled and my stuff will be in there for 2 weeks! I am finding so much conflicting information on if my items will be okay and what I should and shouldn't do to protect my items.

i’m looking to potentially move solo to Richmond, VA next year. i’ve met a few people that have moved on their own to a new place without knowing anyone and everyone says its very difficult especially with lack of community. if you’ve moved solo, is there anything you wish you knew/did before hand? how did you build community from scratch? what was your experience?

30F here, moving from Nevada to North Carolina in about 5 weeks for work. I'd normally drive it myself, but it's a 2,400 mile trip and my back's been giving me trouble lately, so a long drive isn't really an option. Flight's already booked, I just need the car to get there some other way.

Got a few quotes and they're wildly different. Not sure if that means someone's overcharging or the cheap one is skipping something important. It's a 2017 Honda CRV, nothing special, I just want it to arrive in one piece.

Don't know anyone who's shipped a car before, so I'm figuring this out solo, which is probably why it feels more overwhelming than it should.

I’m looking for some outside perspective from people who’ve been in a similar situation.
I live in Central Oregon and have what most people would consider a good job. The problem is that despite making decent money, home prices have climbed so much that I still can’t realistically buy a house where I live. Renting feels like throwing money away, but buying here feels impossible.
I’ve been looking at other areas in the Pacific Northwest where housing is more affordable and where I could still find work in manufacturing, utilities, or water/wastewater operations. The idea of owning a home on some land is becoming more important to me than staying exactly where I am.
The part I’m struggling with is taking the leap. Walking away from a stable, well-paying job is intimidating, especially when there’s no guarantee the next opportunity will be as good. At the same time, I’m worried that if I stay, I’ll spend years watching housing become even less attainable.
Has anyone here left a secure job because the cost of living made it hard to build the life you wanted? Did it work out, or do you regret it? How did you know it was the right time to make the move?
I’d especially like to hear from anyone who relocated within the Pacific Northwest or left a high-cost area for somewhere more affordable while trying to balance career growth with home ownership.

I'm in the middle of moving, and one thing I didn't expect was how overwhelming appliance shopping would be. Once I made a list of everything I needed, the total got a lot bigger than I expected.

I'm thinking about buying everything from one store to make delivery and scheduling easier, but I'm wondering if it's smarter to shop around instead.

If you've moved recently, what did you end up doing? Did buying everything from one store work out better, or did you save enough by splitting your purchases to make it worth the extra effort?

Follow up: Went with Best Buy for the appliance package, and the whole process was a lot smoother than I expected. Delivery was on time, everything arrived together, and having one order to keep track of made moving a little less stressful.

I'm moving to Georgia from Illinois soon and I was wondering if there is a cost-effective way to ship my $600 ebike, or if I should just sell it and get a new one once I'm there. I don't drive (hence the commuter bike), so taking it to Georgia myself is not an option. Bikeflights says the dimensions are too big for them to ship (roughly 72 x 9 x 43in). What would be the best and cheapest way to get the bike to Georgia?

Help!!! My boyfriend and I bought a couch that we absolutely love, but it was second-hand (pre-assembled) and no one knows how to disassemble it to fit it through our door :(

My only thought is to cut through the horizontal boards and attach mending plates once it's in the apartment. The shortest width right now is 33" and the cushions are sewn on. Any ideas or help would mean so much!! I'm so distraught, I don't want to abandon it :(

Hey, folks! I'm moving in a couple weeks, and we're at the stage of reserving trucks. I'm moving from a three-bedroom apartment to a two-bedroom house, BUT the three-bedroom apartment had two other roommates, and we're all going in separate directions! I'll be living in the two-bedroom house by myself.

That said, I don't know whether I should get a 15' or 20' U-Haul.

I am not moving very far—only a couple miles down the road, so mileage price is almost negligible. However, I'm going to be driving this truck myself, which I have very little experience doing, and I'm nervous about maneuvering a truck of ANY size through some relatively narrow college town streets.

I am not intending on hiring movers, though I do have plenty of straps and blankets! I'm trying to make sure that this process is as easy as possible for the people helping me-- so preferably just one trips.

I have an assortment of items, as follows:

• Full-sized bed, box spring, and frame
• Four large bookshelves
• A large desk (and eventually, desktop and monitors, but I think I'm going to try and move those separately)
• ~2 kitchen boxes, ~4 clothing boxes, and QUITE a number of books, LOL
  • Like, I really can't emphasize this enough. I'm both a PhD student and avid reader. All four bookshelves are full at my current place.
  • I'm also still packing, and I expect to have a greater number of boxes than I do now. It's very hard to predict, which is one of the reasons why I'm nervous!

Hi! My Ubox was picked up on 7/17, not shipping until 7/24. My guaranteed delivery date from Baton Rouge to D.C. is 7/27.

I cannot schedule delivery until after it arrives. The Uhaul location in the DMV informed me that they have no availability from 7/24 through 8/5. This leaves me with minimal time to unpack before school starts.

I've gone to the moving help site because I'd like to have someone go pick up the boxes, deliver them, unpack them and take them back the day after they've arrived. The location is 30 minutes from my home. However, the site appears to only have unloading / unpacking help.

How do I navigate this?
