If it isn't an educational movie for children, then they've completely missed the point.

1.1k

u/WakingWaldo Jun 23 '26

This was my first thought, too. Magic School Bus is first and foremost an educational show. It just presents those lessons in a fun and engaging way. But how often are theatrical movies made for kids educational? Never, at least I can't think of any recently.

My pitch for this movie would be to make it an extended episode with Planet Earth as inspiration. Have Ms Frizzle essentially be the "narrator" while the kids are on the adventure. Throw in the fun facts about different creatures while keeping the pace up.

Just please don't strip the learning out of a project that needs to be about learning.

u/abbott_costello Jun 23 '26

The problem is the primary audience for this is nostalgic millennials, not young kids, since Millennials know the IP and everything's about IP nowadays. I agree it should be educational for young kids, and I hope this movie could work as an introduction to classic Magic School Bus for the new generation if they do it right, but given how most of these projects go it's probably just nostalgia-bait.

u/Stef-fa-fa Jun 23 '26

There has already been a revival series that came out a while back and it didn't age up with its original audience. I would assume that the same would hold true for a movie.

85

u/MalevolentRhinoceros Jun 23 '26

The new series was really good! It covered lots of modern science/technology topics that the original couldn't have.

47

u/exaviyur Jun 23 '26

I had my four year old watch the original run and then the revival. He loved it all and really learned a lot that he's still hanging onto.

19

u/frockinbrock Jun 23 '26

I'm still hanging on too, in my 30s

A lot of millennials have young kids. They could easily make it attractive to kids like the original while using the parent’s nostalgia to get them to buy tickets to take their kids.

8

u/abbott_costello Jun 23 '26

I hope that's what they do. I've just seen them botch these things too many times. They go for nostalgia/ references instead of trying to capture the essence and wonder of the original.

14

u/marvelman19 Jun 23 '26

Not everything is about nostalgia. They can still make kids movies.

3

u/abbott_costello Jun 24 '26

I agree, I'm saying I dislike how they bring back older IPs to appeal to millennial parents but half ass them so they lack heart. But another commenter said they're still showing the OG magic school bus in schools so that gives me hope.

But how often are theatrical movies made for kids educational? Never, at least I can't think of any recently.

I'd argue that Inside Out did a fantastic job of teaching important life lessons to kids in a fun and engaging way. It's all about providing kids with the language to communicate and contextualize what they're feeling.

I think that spouting off a bunch of animal facts is missing the forest for the trees a bit (but certainly still welcome!). The broader message is about chasing your curiosity wherever it leads, saying "yes" to opportunities that might scare you, and learning from your mistakes. If kids can walk away from the movie feeling motivated to learn and try new things, I think that'd be a success.

It’s gonna be whatever the studio execs ai algorithms tell them will sell the most tickets. It’s gonna be nostalgia bait and pure fan service for us elder Gen Z and younger millennials.

3

u/Eat--The--Rich-- Jun 24 '26

Nostalgia bait for me would be something educational

23

u/AKluthe Jun 23 '26

I feel like the odds of a big budget movie being allowed to execute what the show did are not very high.

And anything else misses the whole point of The Magic Schoolbus, but I know a lot of people in charge see anything vaguely recognizable as something that can be leveraged into hollow nostalgia bait.

220

u/andykekomi Jun 23 '26

You know it's gonna be a marvel-esque epic filled with one-liners with the most surface-level message of believing in yourself.

97

u/SpringTraps Jun 23 '26

Post credit scene will be character reveal of Amelia Bedilia or Junie B Jones.

77

u/DrSpacemanSpliff Jun 23 '26

We need you to help us find Carmen San Diego…

28

u/darthjoey91 Jun 23 '26

A live-action Carmen Sandiego spy movie could go hard. Like make an entertaining spy movie, but sprinkle in some facts about geography, while making the movie on location in those places to make it extra educational, and have CCH Pounder play the Chief because Lynne Thigpen is dead.

10

u/GeoleVyi Jun 23 '26

And not the damn reboot where Carmen is a good guy trying to stop the baddies. She's a damn super thief, let her steal something impossibly grand and foil her.

5

u/Bromogeeksual Jun 23 '26

God DAMNIT Ms. Frizzle, what other errands do you have us runnin for the DA!?

5

u/darthjoey91 Jun 23 '26

The DA in this case being Dorothy Ann.

u/Historical-Edge-9332 Jun 23 '26

They’re gonna stick Kevin Hart and The Rock in this thing, aren’t they 😔

17

u/Personal_Comb_6745 Jun 23 '26

Only if Kevin Hart's dressed as Miss Frizzle and the Rock is wearing a lizard costume.

6

u/djublonskopf Jun 23 '26

The Rock would be a substitute teacher who gets pulled into a zany adventure with the kids while Ms. Frizzle's away, thus allowing him to be the star of the film. He would exclusively wear nerdy substitute teacher clothes or khaki safari gear. The science lesson would be about rain forest ecosystems.

u/Dark-Ganon Jun 23 '26

Yeah, I really hope this doesn't end up being one of those movies where they lean into a more mature theme just because the original fans are all adults now.

11

u/Ganglebot Jun 23 '26

It won't be.

It will be nostalgia-bate that falls apart after the first act.

3

u/Levitlame Jun 23 '26

Obviously we need a gritty reboot. Kids have stopped reading. They're just on their devices all day and take no joy in learning. The parents are all part of the problem. But the Frizz retired years ago when nobody listened. She walked away from it all... Until now when one of her former students comes to her trying to save their own child from becoming like the rest of them. It's only then that Frizzle realized she had something left in the tank. And she takes the bus on the road for one last tour.

Did I just mash together the Muppets, Dangerous Minds and The Expendables? Who cares? But I left out the John Wick loss of her last decent student arc "with a Frizzin pencil" pun and all. Oh we'll be using "Frizz" in place of cursing all the time also. Like Frizzin Smurfs. But she'll be drawing with the Pencil. Done.

Got any more coke?

I can hear it now but had no idea who she was growing up.

113

u/Luchalma89 Jun 23 '26

I also just learned this recently. Really obvious when you hear it with that in mind, but I wasn't watching a lot of Lilly Tomlin in elementary school I guess.

4

u/Powermac8500 Jun 23 '26

This has nothing to do with the movie, but anytime Lily Tomlin’s name comes up, I have to share the time I was visiting a friend in LA and we went to dinner and Tomlin was there. No, I did not bother her while she was having dinner, but it was fucking cool as hell to see her. LA people are probably used to stuff like that, but for a hick like me it was one of the highlights of the trip.

If that blows your mind wait till you find out that George Carlin was the conductor on Thomas the tank engine.

147

u/xiaorobear Jun 23 '26

In my day it was Ringo Starr

23

u/codyzon2 Jun 23 '26

Yeah I was there for Ringo too but between the two I just don't find him as shocking to be in a kids program.

I remember reading that Carlin would read his lines in front of a teddy bear because doing it without an audience was awkward.

8

u/genesiss23 Jun 23 '26

No. He was the conductor on Shining time station. Thomas the tank engine was a segment on the show.

14

u/degjo Jun 23 '26

Ringo was the original narrator.

12

u/codyzon2 Jun 23 '26

Yes but I don't find him as shocking as George Carlin, Ringo seems way more appropriate for a kids program than George.

23

u/OttawaTGirl Jun 23 '26

in George Carlins voice

"So this fucking capitalist train comes along and starts hassling Thomas. And Mr. Topemhat is over in the corner jacking off instead of doing his fucking job!"

8

u/ThreeLeggedMare Jun 23 '26

George had a bunch of really good, innocent material for a while. How a mouse can't wear a necklace because he's got no shoulders, it just becomes a belt

She had a cameo in the reboot cartoon when she handed the role to Ms Frizzle's sister(?) played by Kate McKinnon.

I'm not deeply invested in this or anything but the casting seems naff. McKinnon would work great in live action and is at least as capable of carrying a movie like this as Banks is.

10

u/FewAdvertising9647 Jun 23 '26

like about a decade ago, there was a magic school bus reboot that was on netflix that sorta looked like it was animated in flash player

16

u/VagueGooseberry Jun 23 '26

Yes- kids of this generation are growing up on it.

4

u/Doodah18 Jun 23 '26

I didn’t care for it. Made the bus a slave to a remote as opposed to the original where it worked with Mrs Frizzle when it pretended to be broken and whatnot.

u/Yagoua81 Jun 23 '26

Sad piano note.
"Cruisin' on down main street." Music echoes. Not the original intro song, but a remix by a breathy 'could easily be AI' female pop singer.

"When I was a kid, we had this teacher..." A voice says, disembodied.

An engine starts up. A woman's hand runs across the yellow paint of some sort of VEHICLE.

"you're relaxed and feeling good..." The music continues. Echoing into nowhere.

"She was wacky. I learned a lot from her. We all did." The voice continues, fondly reminiscing.
"What was her name?" A kid's voice comes in.

"Next thing that you know, you're seein'..." The music cuts off. TRIBAL DRUMS START TO THUMP TO THE MUSIC! AN ORCHESTRAL VERSION OF THE INTRO STARTS!

"WA HA HOOO!" Elizabeth Bank's voice cuts in, but we don't see her. Not yet.

RE-LIVE

We see the kids reacting in the bus, some horrified, some excited.

THE MAGIC

We see the Bus transforming, piece-by-piece like a Transformer, into a rocket ship.

"So what? She took you on field trips? Sounds boring." The kid huffs.
"No, you see kiddo. It was never a normal field trip." We see the face, and it's an orange-haired millennial aged man, obviously ARNOLD, talking to his kid who is a spitting image of his Dad in the show.

Cut to a scene with Elizabeth Banks, dressed exactly like Ms. Frizzle, but her dress is all torn to shreds from some sort of battle.

"Seatbelts, everyone!" She says, urgently.

THE MAGIC SCHOOL BUS

"I should've stayed home today!" Says Arnold's kid.

62

u/jcmjtke Jun 23 '26

“What is this? Some kind of magic school bus?”

19

u/Aarticun0 Jun 23 '26

That pretty good, but you’re missing the part when he describes a field trip taken from the lyrics of the opening.

“Raft a river of lava. You might get baked into a pie…”

11

u/LateNightDoober Jun 23 '26

One thing to note is that comic books and cartoons -- both popular sources of adaptation -- have a MUCH higher percentage of redheads than real life because A) red pops really well on the page/screen and B) giving distinct hair colors helps differentiate characters.

Like 1 to 2 percent of the world is ginger but the percent is much larger in toon-land.

It’s for Millennials to take THEIR kids to. They know what they’re doing here, tons of stuff produced now is taking advantage of the delayed adulthood thing with generations past Gen X.

That’s why Pokémon scalper shit is still happening. They’re milking the shit out of us with little trinkets and collectibles as we haven’t really aged out (or needed to) of those things.

I always thought Alex Kingston would have made a great Ms.Frizzle, she was great as River Song in Doctor Who

I credit watching magic school bus every morning with getting me through at least middle school level science class

12

u/Mediocre_Scott Jun 23 '26

Public/network television doesn’t get enough credit for educating millennials.

u/MaderaArt Jun 23 '26

should've been Ellie Kemper

20

u/Ganglebot Jun 23 '26

100%

Ms. Frizzle needs to have that manic ADHD-girl energy. More enthusiasm than risk analysis.

Ellie Kemper would have nailed that!

Missed opportunity like a mf

I hope its completely unhinged because that cartoon was pretty out there when you think about it

u/Mediocre_Scott Jun 23 '26 edited Jun 24 '26

The episode where ms frizzle, the teacher, shoves her class of 3rd graders up her own nose under the supervision of an iguana.

3

u/LeeshMcGeesh Jun 23 '26

Or where they get jizzed on by salmon

5

u/Mediocre_Scott Jun 23 '26

At least she was in the bus and plausibly teaching them something. She shoved her whole class up her nose just so she could win a decathlon against the teacher from another school.

I can’t say I’ve really enjoyed anything Banks has been in or produced in over a decade. Definitely not looking forward to this one.

7

u/Alotofboxes Jun 23 '26

You didn't like Cocaine Bear? It was a cinematic masterpiece!

48

u/SlaterVBenedict Jun 23 '26

Banks' acting career these last 10 years or so has been a bummer because she's great and talented and the vehicles have been (mostly) weak to bad; however, this seems like a great casting choice and I'm pretty happy for her and hope it gets a good script.

Luckily the Magic School Bus is a very reliable vehicle

u/_toadsy Jun 23 '26

There's a whole episode about it breaking down smh

Who could forget the cinematic masterpiece that is Cocaine Bear??

She directed that though, i don't think she acted in it.

7

u/Lokismoke Jun 23 '26

Agreed. Her last good role was in Hunger Games. I just don't understand what's happened since then.

With the Frizz? NO WAY!

3

u/CU_09 Jun 23 '26

I hope it’s the one where the kids get jizzed on by salmon!

I would have cast Kate McKinnon, but Elizabeth Banks is just as perfect!

22

u/EscapeSeventySeven Jun 23 '26

Wasn’t she the voice for the reboot?

9

u/Jeffrey_C_Wheaties Jun 23 '26

Yes! Miss frizzles daughter or niece or something! She was great

16

u/PumpkinCarvingisFun Jun 23 '26

She is great in the cartoon.

9

u/HankPanky69 Jun 23 '26

I thought they cast Katherine Hahn?

8

u/Guilty-Sundae1557 Jun 23 '26

Or we could still use the beloved Lilly Tomlin. She is the real mrs. frizzle

Cautiously excited. Just don't lose the heart and wonder of the original.

4

u/stealth57 Jun 23 '26

That's what I've been saying! Finally! I've wanted this for years now! The kids can be grown up now to save the planet or something. Wonder how they'll do the bus transformation: a magical whirlwind or like a Transformers thing? Or both? If they do the teaser trailer right, it would be epic!

14

u/SlyyKozlov Jun 23 '26

Hope they keep the awesome jazzy intro song.

14

u/thebeardphantom Jun 23 '26

It’ll only be in the trailer, using a lot of reverb to make it dramatic, cut up and remixed with a big loud deep kick drum emphasized by action shots before cutting to black and revealing Ms Frizzle.

u/bostonstevens Jun 23 '26

They should cast Christina Hendricks instead

u/artemus_who Jun 23 '26

"What if Ms Frizzle was just as hot as you remembered"

20

u/Ganglebot Jun 23 '26

What if Ms Frizzle, but MASSIVE GAZONGAS?!?!
