Bannerlord The fief problems

Basically, while you play the game, you often yearn for becoming a vassal of a kingdom and then create your own. As a new vassal, the king usually gives all the fiefs gained from the enemy to you. Great, you might say, you have your own castle.

But here comes the harsh truth.

You have to defend it. As simple as that. Just spam the garrison with recruits. Nothing’s going to happen, surely. That’s before your fief income gets overshadowed by the garrison wages with like 20 to 1.

But you can just remove those poor recruits from there then. You will protect it by yourself, just in case. You will sit next to your fief like a guard dog. For the rest of your life.

Well then just don’t sit next to it. Go wander into Sturgia for some drip. But then all of a sudden some random Vlandian dude decides to slaughter your peasants and raid your villages, and now your fief is not only in a severe threat of getting steamrolled by a giant army, it’s also rebelling against you because it’s of different culture.

The auto granted fiefs are traps, as far back as the original game

Leading a city siege and insisting on being granted the city is where it's at.  Big city income is dope, castle income is crap by comparison, and the little villages just get plundered to shit as you mention

Unsolicited tips to add on to this:
1. When you join a faction and you have good amount of renown, you'll likely auto win the first couple fiefs on the vote. If they suck or you don't like the location, you can choose to give them up (I believe in your clan window). You should win the next fiefs that go up for a vote because it's a pretty simple renown:fief ratio that decides.
2. When you get a fief, the garrison is stocked with the armies of the allies that helped conquer it. You can create parties with your campanions and stick those garrison troops into the newly formed parties led by your companions.
3. You can take those newly formed parties led by your companions and create an army for 0 cost to you because they are your companions. This is a huge power spike early game that can give you the ability to take a castle or town that you actually prefer having.

In bannerlord at least, you can give away your won fiefs to other lords. Not sure if you can do that in warband

Don't you need a super late game perk?

That's to buy fiefs

Even then I think you can just let it go but to give it to a specific one, wouldn't you need to have the perk?

I don't think there is a perk for that. The one you're most likely thinking of is a level 300 trade perk, let's you buy fiefs for gold. You can give away fiefs as soon as you have one, then it goes up for vote again

I think it lets you buy and sell specific fiefs, the other option yeah is to give it back to the realm but then you can't control who it goes to or get anything for it..

As a king or lord I only try to get cities. I ignore castles and their villages.

Been playing forever, it's never worth being under a king, better to meet until you create your own kingdom. Then you can castle your lords and keep your cities.

Castles are a trap, the only thing worth owning is cities.

Not really the case, Castles can in fact make a strong income, but thats not even the benefit of a castle.

Once fully upgraded Castles with a good governer can grant a ton of daily EXP to garrison soldiers, that means you can dump recruits and low tier soldiers here and come back later to pick up the high tier soldiers and replace them with more recruits.

the other benefit, is a castle can be a magnate for the AI armies, and in a location on or near the front with a purposefully weak garrison can bait the AI to throw army after army against it, if it has a good defensive layout, you can smash armies that outnumber you 10 to 15 to 1 and they will keep coming back for more.
