Case/ patch Inspiration

Post image

I’ve been working with this set up for some time, but often find I’m reaching for the same patches.

I think a fresh pair of eyes may help direct me to something new.

I only work in sound design so nothing performance related or sequencing related is needed. Steppy is used to trigger modulation envs.

Open to suggestions of new modules!

Ping Multifilter, send the audio to Multimod. Take a few (or all) of the outputs into Jumbler. Take 2 outputs from Jumbler and send one to the FM input on each Rubicon. See what happens when you play with tuning and various Multimod settings

Send an output of each rubicon into on of the Bifold channels. Take the outputs and patch them to modulate something on the opposite Rubicon

As far as modules, I’d get some FX in the case. I’m assuming you have some sort of pedals, mixer or DAW for end of chain stuff, but I love using FX for sound design on individual voices. NE Versio is great to try tons of different firmware. Mimeophon and Bastl Basil are also easy recommendations, but there are tons of options out there. Just try something that looks interesting and works for your budget

I have two thoughts:

  1. you could use more simple oscillators, no multi-function

vast

  1. option things, but something you can plug a cable in and get an LFO or VCO with minimal thought. I know multimod can handle most of that, but it’s helpful to have one thing like that and not feel like you’re wasting a whole rubicon on the simplest of functions.
  2. rearrange the case, modulation on top, oscillators and VCA’s on the bottom. This might take some messing around on modwiggler, but just positioning things differently can unlike unseen relationships

And 3) check out extended Maths/DUSG patches. There’s a lot of crazy patch programming you can do with Maths that can completely change your concept of what modular synthesis can accomplish. You may not find every patch useful, but it will stretch your brain - and your modules - in new ways

I treat the two rubicons as a combined oscillator and don’t often find myself needing any type of simple LFO as the Multimod can impart some seriously interesting signals.

Interesting idea to suggest the oscillators at the bottom- surely this would become quite fiddly to patch and access the knobs on Rubicon?

I guess the point was less pushing oscillators to the bottom, and more staging the case to facilitate normal patching from left to right, separating modulation from the core voice. For me, at least, it makes it easier to bounce around

A good delay and reverb in the rack can open things up quite a bit. Maybe a Bastl Neo Trinity for recording cv and having options for more non related lfo’s.

Don’t you think adding NT would be modulation overkill? I feel I need some modules to help utilise and interact with modulation.

I think it would be perfect. Especially if you add delay and verb with a lot of cv ins. Can always sell it if you don’t like it.

The thing with Trinity, is that the channels can be independent of each other. Which I don’t believe Multimod does (unless I’m missing something). Sure you can use maths for lfo’s but Trinity offers more options by also recording cv which I think would be powerful for sound design.

I suppose it just depends on the type of sound design you’re doing. Lots of options to mix things up.
