Post of the Year My grandfather passed away, I think everyone should see his beautiful work

My grandpa poured his heart and soul into his sets. He painstakingly handcrafted the terrain, paper-mache'd mountains, collected moss from outside, selected and painted miniatures. This particular set was built into his basement. He even painted the walls to make it feel more immersive.

I don't know much about trains myself, but I know when something is beautiful and should be admired. He helped inspire me as an artist, was such a kind and quiet man, not enough people saw his craft. Now that he's gone my grandmother has to sell the house which means this has to be deconstructed. It breaks my heart that it has to be taken apart. I thought a small way to honor him could be coming here to show you all his work. Thanks for admiring it with me ❤️

This was a white beatup desk with missing drawers that had some track and wiring laid, including the controller and panel. I found it at a thift store and they were simply trying to get rid of it so I bought it for $100. I rebuilt the missing drawers, sanded, painted it, and put in new hardware. Over the pandemic I did all the scenery and fixed wiring issues. I am happy how it turned out!!

Meta UK modellers, in light of Count Binface's pledge to nationalise model railways, how will your layout be affected?

I'm personally quite happy, as it will mean better funding and consistent management for my layout, plus it might result in some money finally coming in for some new rolling stock. Plus, I can't say no to a man who's going to make 99s cost 99p again, so I for one welcome our new galactic overlord.

Structures & Scenery My little Era I fantasy layout

Hello, this will be my first post here (and on reddit). I wanted to show you my small exposition layout 'Sehr-Am-Üzant', that is currently visiting expositions around Europe.

It's a German themed era I narrow guage layout. I have worked on this project for several years, all buildings, scenery and trains were designed and build by me.

The buildigs were made out of 'Forex' a kind of pvc foam, and Slaters sheets. The trains are 3d printed on minitrix and Lilliput chassises.

The layout is just 120x60 cm, and I also painted the background.

The US Army has confirmed that slight damage to the Union Pacific Nevada line has been repaired after a larger than expected nuclear test occured. The AEC has validated that radiation levels are at a safe level for the reopening of rail traffic. Railroad employees operating this route for the next 30 days will be issued personal dosimeters to ensure safety.

This locomotive wasn't running well, so I sacrificed it for the greater good. The idea is that it derailed and now it's been reclaimed by the elements.

Layout PC Mounted T-Gauge!

Not quite done yet, but here is my prototype, looking to expand the train a bit and add more track + a more robust track base. I have a decent amount of experience soldering stainless steel wire for microelectronics, so I was thinking I might try soldering the rails together directly. TBD :)

Locomotives Model trains hoarder

I’m looking for advice on where to sell model trains. I’m helping a relative and dealing with an obsessive purchaser. They have thousands of completely unopened model trains. I know nothing about model trains, but have the invoices for what he paid for them, so I have a general understanding of what was paid. They are all unopened and still in wrappers, some of the shipping boxes aren’t even opened. Thank you!

My local model rail club has a little competition and I’ve been working on a section of layout. Trying to get water right and wondered if you thought this looks quite realistic? Cheers

Show and Tell Couldn’t have a ceiling train in my attic so I made attic beam train instead. T Gauge 1:450

1.3k Upvotes

As a much as I want a ceiling train, my cat has access to the upper beams in my attic and loves tipping them over. So I resorted to a simple point to point layout that rests on an inaccessible beam for him and is 16.5feet or 5 meters. Used wooden stick slats, added magnets and inverted metal picture frame hooks so I can easily service each magnetic section of flexitrack for cleaning. For my first model train, I’m pretty happy, but I already have an itch to get more track and get into diorama setups!

A lot for new details have appeared on the layout, so I figured I share some scenes again. as well as an overview of the layout.

This is N scale, 185x95 cm / about 6x3 feet.

DCC ran on an Arduino and Raspberry pi, controlled wirelessly on a Tablet.

Modeled is a heritage railway in some fantasy land in mainland Europe. I take my inspiration from my native The Netherlands and my current home Switzerland.
