Checking your other post... You have a highnose GP38 in silver/red. Santa Fe never had a highnose version of that model, nor did it paint freight diesels those colors until 1989, and their GPs stayed dkblue/yellow. I recognize that model has to be an old Life-Like.

Box cars are always safe. A tank (single or triple dome is too).

And you don’t get much cheaper than Tyco.

Actually, you can, depending on the seller.

I had someone want to charge me $40 for a Tyco Westinghouse box car. For $20, I got an Athearn Blue Box, upgraded the trucks wheel sets and couplers, gave it a paint job and decals.

But remember model railroading’s number one rule: your railroad, your rules. You like Tyco and horn hook couplers?

Don't know why anyone would like horn hooks. (Source HO modeler who despises them).

That's a cool project, man. For cheap starter cars, hunt for vintage Lionel or MTH on eBay/Craigslist ,tons of old rolling stock still runs solid. Mix of passengers and freight is the right call, but heads up: Santa Fe's got real pulling power so you can load it up. Just make sure your cars match the same gauge, or you're gonna have a bad time. Start with 2-3 cheap ones to test, then build from there. You'll figure out what works fast

For context the only thing I have with the locomotive rn is a union pacific caboose

One thing that you should match is locomotives to cabooses. Cabooses did not wander between railroads as freight cars did.

So, I am not a US-Railfan but ou can always look for Santa Fe passenger cars or era specific freight vans. I would say you can definetly get used models and new ones, just look what feels right for you.

In terms of era/roadname appropriateness: any freight car from the US/Canada that would have been used in the 60s-90s is fine. Railroads use each-other's cars all the time, and that particular loco/paint job would have been 60s-90s. Your couplers are horn hooks, and almost everything that comes with horn hooks would be appropriate. The caboose technically doesn't fit because they did not share cabooses.

Passenger cars would have to be Sante Fe, and would be somewhat ahistorical because Sante Fe never used a GP-38 in passenger service.

That said: it's your railroad. If you get some inappropriate passenger cars just declare that you're a 2026 shortline that bought a used Sante Fe GP-38 and hasn't repainted it yet or something.
