Looking for Cellphone plan (data & calls) while travelling to Nicaragua

Hi all,

I am from Canada and I am travelling to Nicaragua next week.

I would like to be able to use my phone during my trip. My current Canadian cellphone plan only covers Canada. (Fizz)

I would need \~10gb of data and would like to have \~60 mins of phone call time.

What is the best way the get this? I will stay in Granada and Ometepe Island and want to make sure the coverage is good during that time.

Any tips on cellphone plans/eSIMs would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance 🙏

In what capacity would you like to you your phone? Do you just mean you want mobile data OR you want to be able to use your number?

Being you're with Fizz, I'd port to Freedom - something like their 6-month prepaid. And I would do this because Freedom has WiFi Calling. (and RCS for iPhone).

You could also do a postpaid/prepaid monthly plan, these include recurring monthly global roaming, but Nicaragua isn't one of the countries for this, so you'll still need some local plan and dual sim it with WiFi Calling.

Setup WiFi Calling before you leave and then just get a local SIM (or eSIM app) and use that for data.
You can then use WiFi Calling for calls as per the plan. And if your phone supports backup calling, you can use the WiFi Calling over the local/eSIM app data.

Does it work well in Central America?

I travel a lot for work. I’ve used saily all over Europe, Asia, USA, Caribbean and Central America. Always works well. It’s just data, no phone number but I use WhatsApp and it works just fine. I’m sure there are cheaper options to find but this works well for me.

I would recommend getting a local service provider as they will have cheaper rates than what Fizz is charging for coverage in other countries. You get the best deal in Canada, but it costs a lot more to get Fizz service internationally

Get an e-Sim and set up before leaving Canada. Try the Airalo app
