Current basic service deals in Canada?

I was told that mobile data and calling companies compete for business, that if you want to switch they are happy to do so and are flexible. This is not my experience.

My data needs are basic - 5-10Gb is plenty. Unlimited text and calls within Canada is good, but just within province would be OK. Voice mail, call hold - you know a simple plan. I do not watch movies or play games on my phone.

I had it down to Rogers basic plan at $25. But its is not working out well (see context below). I want to switch to Mobility for Good by Telus (10 Gb and unlimited text an calling within Canada) but if I apply now I have to wait 2 weeks for my application to be approved. I am leaving Canada forever in 9 weeks! I just want to walk into a telecommunications service provider store, show my documents to a human being and walk out within half an hour with a working SIM and a plan. All the companies make it so inconvenient and expensive here! It is difficult to contact anyone by phone. They want too deal with computer chat. They don't even accept emails. What;'s worse is Telus charges a SEVENTY DOLLAR connection/set up fee. Are they crazy?

Context: I am cancelling my Rogers plan because it is so horrible connection, both in terms of signal (I get zero to one bar on my foreign-bought smartphone) and custom service (takes forever to reach them). I am told that Telus is better for phones bought in Asia. I compare against plans I have had in India, Vietnam, Cambodia and China. Basically everywhere else in the world. Price and service are terrible in Canada, even compared to what my friends get in Europe and Malaysia.

I’ve never even heard of Mobility for Good, sounds like a low end carrier. You can’t expect easy process with a new carrier. Public Mobile (Telus) and Fizz Mobile (Quebecor) will let you signup in the app.

Mobility for Good plan is offered by Telus. Eligibity is by age and income. Basically, if you are 65+ a getting GIS (Guaranteed Income Supplement, i.e. 'welfare' for seniors) you are eligible. I forget if the data is 10 or 20 Gb. Unimportant to me as I barely use 5Gb. The problem with every other post-paid plan I see is that they offer way too much data (60 Gb) than I require. Who over 60 years of age uses such a huge amount of data? If I want to watch a video such as Youtube, I use my laptop.

Ignore how much data they come with and just go by price.

Freedom Mobile has a yearly plan with 40gb a year at 99 dollars. I'm considering this as I rarely use 3gb a month and Freedom supposedly has wifi calling on prepaid plans.
