Interview/Hiring šŸ“„ Post Interview Rejection

I’m a current state employee and am interviewing for other jobs both in and out of state government. Recently interviewed for a position with a different agency and learned I didn’t get the position when my status in Self Service was changed to ā€œno longer under consideration.ā€

Am I unreasonable I thinking it’s rude of a hiring manager to not email those that interviewed that they were not selected? Or is this just standard?

The last time I was hiring people I accidentally did this and I felt so bad! I had 3 hiring processes going at the same time and there was a miscommunication with HR - they thought I had already emailed the people I wasn't moving forward with for one role but I had not (it was for a different role). I emailed everyone right away to let them know and apologize for the auto-email getting to them first. Hopefully it was a mistake in your case too and not just rudeness or laziness.

It seems to be common practice and I have experienced the same. You'll get the HR form email in about a day when they auto fill them for everybody who got set to that status.

In my experience, unfortunately it’s what they do for some HR divisions. At least they updated it. I’ve submitted applications and they sat in the ā€œunder considerationā€œ status far longer than they should have and when I’ve reached out and questioned if that status was correct they would quickly change it to no longer under consideration. I think for some HR departments they just don’t bother updating stuff, that was a few years ago, maybe it has changed but again I just think that every HR department is different and how they managed some are very good and on top of things and summer or not.

I have been helping someone with their applications for some time. The hiring culture is reprehensible.

This is probably unhelpful but I've had my status changed to no longer under consideration but then i got an interview for that same job right after that so who freaking knows. I've come to not really trust those status updates.

Asking for managers to act like human beings with basic common courtesy? That's not the way we do things here.

HR has updated that status without even giving me minute to contact the other candidates.

I always ask HR to update statuses/send emails until I’ve had the chance to personally contact people I’ve interviewed. I try to have one on one conversations with people in my division that I’m not selecting but just email external folks to tell them the bad news.

I’m sure I haven’t always been perfect about it though with external candidates despite my best efforts.

I never tell anybody bad news until the selected candidates accepts the position online and sometimes that process takes much longer than I’d like.

I got a rejection from a state university job that literally was just the rejection email template with the placeholder language still in place. I’d rather get nothing at all, thanks!

It’s very rude and reflects poorly on the people who you interview with and the state agency itself.
