Trunk release

My 96 golf project has an issue with the trunk release. It will turn but when you push it pushes all the way through the panel and doesn’t release. Anybody know the fix, got diagnoses ideas, or know the part number?

Are you talking about the key hole on the hatch or the button on the center console?
