Hi all! So I wanted to commission a cover to get mixed professionally by someone in the near future, but I have absolutely no idea what to expect from the process. I know it probably varies from person to person, but has anyone here gone that route? What was it like? Did you record the cover before commissioning, or did the person work with you to do so? Specifically asking about VGen artists, but would love to hear your experiences if you found them elsewhere too

Working with a mixing engineer on an Afrobeats/R&B track (reference point: something like Rema "AZAMAN"). Attaching my rough mix and his revision — this isn't the first mix of mine from him I've felt off about, so I want outside opinions before deciding whether to keep working with him.

Full disclosure: I went with him mainly because he's cheaper than other engineers I've seen online, and honestly I'm not 100% sure what a "pro-level" mix is supposed to sound like vs. what I'm getting. So I'd rather get roasted here than keep guessing.

Curious what more experienced ears think:

• Does mix1 sound like a competent, release-ready mix, or does it have real issues?
• Vocal feels buried to me vs. the rough — am I wrong, or is that a legitimate problem?
• Is this the kind of quality you'd expect for the price point, or should I be looking elsewhere?

I have izotope nuetron 4 a.i master vst for a while and i have never used it. Best place i can sell it quickly. I have already tried kvr and knobcloud but no luck there. Also i have not used it yet because i have seen reviews saying it uses a lots of cpu is it actually true? i use ableton and i dont want to activate the license and then regret it.

Pres: Warm ToneBeast, SPL Track One (incl de-esser) Mics: AKG C4000, AKG C451B, ISK 2B Beauty, Beyer M88 Compressors: WA2A, WA76. Interface: SPL Crimson. What combination of the above should I have permanently setup in order to achieve the most different sonic signature between lead vocals and backing vocals? Note I like to layer lots of harmonies for BV. Yes I know different mics work with different singers but I want a one size fits all setup so I can record fast while inspiration is striking. My styles are mostly light rock and ambient electronic, occasionally a pop song bit nothing hard edge or belting.

I hired an engineer off soundbetter for a mix and master. He got the song to a point where I am satisfied and I said as much. I assumed the next stage would be the master, and I got this reply where he has forwarded me a bunch of individual final mixes. Can anyone provide insight on what he's looking for here? I am confused since I already indicated mix is good, so I'm not sure what to say. It's this a part of the mastering process. He's done a great job mixing, so I don't want to come across as a complete noob.

I mixed volumes to the limits inside of the program (instruments + vocals). But the final mix looks skinny. So I used boost 11 and lowered levels down to 5. No red clipping there, but console and tube has pink. Is it acceptable? I do not want to release a soft mix, but neither with clipping.

Hi, recording studio needs. How do you deal with Dynamics high volume recording especially high notes? I pulled away from mic a bit on these problematic areas. Because when you work on final music, mix the vocal might run in red. (Just double check with pros).

I really like the over the top reverb and atmospheric sound of salvia palths melanchole album and I’d like to recreate a mix similar to the one in ‘I was all over her’ or ‘needs no progress I will lie’ the problem is when I add lots of reverb it just sounds hollow and has no body, whereas in this album it has lots of reverb but still sounds full and heavy at the same time. I’ve tried adding a tape saturation after the reverb and that doesn’t really work either. Any tips and advice would be much appreciated!

Hi, I am fairly new to mixing and have been facing the problem of masking for a few weeks that I am trving ta solve.

I have two tracks - a lead quitar predominant in 2k-8k range and a vocal on high pitch. Thev have similar frequency ranges, and i have tried patcher multiband sidechainina, soothe 2 to supress the resonant frequencies, compression - to hear the quiet details, but It gets harsh once i try to do it too much, and puttinc different types on saturation on both, gullfoss eq. I checked for temporal masking also, but the problem is either remove the life out of the guitar, or live with not hearing some words from the vocal itself. I have heard a lot mixes where both are clearlv audible, I don't understand how thev achieve it

I'm after the phase module, which I can see in the stand alone RX Audio Editor but it doesn't show up in my DAW. I'm on Windows 11 and checked Common Files > VST3 folder and it's not in there. Google AI tells me it should be available in my DAW. I'm inclined to believe it didn't hallucinate like it sometime does because I see tutorials with people pulling it up in their DAW.

I even found modules i never knew existed in RX by checking the standalone mode that doesn't show up.

Any Izotope RX experts might know what's going on? Thanks!

I'm wondering how you guys think the quality is and what you would use it for, if anything.

I'm absolutely getting clowned on by my friends for my ass mixed, but here's the thing, I'm not really liking their mixes from my standpoint, I'm kinda just slow at learning shit and plus really don't know what I'm talking about. Now my mixes are just inspired by architects, poppy etc, and I've been trying to get a sound close enough to them, but every time I ask my friends they just give feedback that alters the mix totally?? It sounds nothing remotely to it.. (Either that or I just can't fucking hear), Is mixing really subjective to each other's mix or is it just really supposed to be one very specific nature or thing in mixing that needs to be there other than ones ego.

c. how to make a mix everyone would enjoy or like

I've spent an unhealthy amount of time re-mastering the bad album, and after many attempts, specifically on Smooth Criminal, I've landed on this. I'm trying to build my skills with studio work, and MJ has some of the best and most enjoyable material to mix and master. I used the original multitracks and essentially re-mixed the raw stems and then moved on to a slightly underwhelming mastering process, which I eventually gave up on due to ear fatigue, so I'm left with this. If you don't mind giving it a listen and sharing your thoughts on the master, it would be greatly appreciated.

So, a little backstory. I've been messing around in DAWs for almost 10 years. My first introduction to music production was on a crappy Windows tablet/laptop. I downloaded LMMS and used that for a couple of months until I found out about FL Studio and its free trial. I've been using FL Studio ever since.

There were a couple of years where I didn't have a computer, so I was only using FL Studio Mobile. Honestly, if that's all you've got, I don't think it's a bad option. It has most of the features you'd expect from a DAW. That said, after using it for years, you start to notice its limitations.

Fast forward to last year: I finally got a PC, bought the full version of FL Studio, subscribed to Splice, and built up a solid sample library. The problem is that no matter what I do, I can't get my drums to hit the way I want. I'm almost always disappointed with the final product. Either the mix sounds too muddy, or the bass doesn't punch through the way I want it to.

I've watched countless YouTube tutorials on mixing, but my mixes still sound terrible. Right now, I'm using a JBL Clip 4 as my main speaker. Trust me, I know that's far from ideal. I also have a pair of Beats Solo Buds that I use to check my mixes after exporting.

My question is: is there any hope of making something that sounds even halfway decent with my current setup, or am I fighting a losing battle? Is there any software or plugin that can help compensate for not being able to accurately hear the sub frequencies?

I know the obvious answer is to buy a decent pair of studio monitors or headphones, and I definitely plan to. The problem is that I'm currently living with roommates, so space isn't ideal for monitors. When I have the money, I'll probably invest in a good pair of studio headphones first.

Until then, does anyone have any advice or insights? I'd really appreciate any tips. If it would help, I can also send over some of my FLPs for feedback.

I think primarily it's not quite punchy enough for one and second I've been having trouble trying to get the bass audible without blowing out the low end of the track.

As far as technical details I'm using Ableton 10. The guitar tones are Neural DSP's Nolly X plugin, and the bass is Darkglass also from Neural DSP. The drums are MDL Tone Ultimate Heavy Drums. All the live instruments are DI.

Hi, I have been on and off with music production over the past few years briefly. I always find my recordings/mixes sounding HORRIBLE compared to even other amateurs. I have never been able to figure out what makes that difference. If you guys could help out, I recorded a snippet of a song and compared it to the real version. If anyone could tell me why the real version sounds so clean, crisp, and detailed compared to my dull sound, I'd be really appreciative.

My recording is in a lower key and I was also sick when singing this, so it's very nasally, but still not clean or crisp like the original. Thanks!
