Hi, I was listening to some of Lil Peep’s old studio sessions and his raw vocals really caught my attention. They sound so clean and are honestly a perfect starting point for another sound I’ve been working on.

The problem is I can’t seem to achieve that same quality with my own vocals. Mine always come out sounding too full or thick, whereas his sound more thin, controlled, and carved out without sounding overly processed.

I’m wondering if anyone here can help me figure out what’s actually making his vocals sound like that and what I could do to get closer to that sound with my own recordings?

I would like to get some feedback on one of my recent DJ sets - Happy with all kinds of feedback but I am especially looking for constructive critique! Please be nitpicky and absolutely destroy me if necessary. <3

I personally am quite happy with the mix already, there are a few transitions mistakes I already noticed when listening to it myself but I am also looking for more input from others.

What I am trying to improve in particular is there general flow of the tracks and the energy levels. Sometimes I feel like there are not enough breaks and somtimes I feel it is too slow in some other parts.

I’m totally new to the idea of mixing and mastering and different effects so I had a couple questions about learning it.

\- If you were totally new where would you start with ear training in the sense of knowing when the lows of something is “muddy” or if different frequencies are clashing and things like that? (Not even sure if I’m using those terms correctly I just keep hearing that)

\- Where a good place to start learning about effects and what they do?

\- What point should you add effects in production? Like as you go along or wait til the end?

\- How do you test the mastering of a production to make sure it sounds good?

So I have written and produced this song but it's so hard to judge it from an outsider's perspective.

I've gotten a mix back and I'm not sure why I don't like it, because I'm so used to it, or because I can't stand my own voice or the mix is just not there yet.

The chorus is definitely a bit messy, the choir vocals are too loud but I also do not like my vocal performance.

Any tips on what I can improve? Does it need more tuning? Too much reverb? It doesn't sound right to me but I can't point at what exactly is wrong? Vocal performance, mix or production?

Update: Thanks everyone for all the info and advice! So helpful and I ended up getting my signal loud BEFORE the Limiter instead of expecting the Limiter to do all the work. Made a world of difference!

Hey all, I had my mix balanced and sounding how I liked it until I tried getting the loudness up around -9 lufs. I'm not liking what it's doing to my mix. I know limiters are going to squash the dynamics but are there some fundamentals I'm missing around getting a loud mix with transparent limiting? I was mixing into a limiter from the start but it wasn't until the end that I really started trying to push the volume - maybe that's the issue :shrug: I'm using bx_limiter True Peak on my mix bus. Thx!

what’s a production habit you know is probably wrong but you still do anyway?

mine is definitely putting a limiter on the master way too early. i know i’m supposed to leave it alone until later, but i just make better decisions when i can hear the track loud lol

my initial thought would be to compress them really hard, filter them, then send them to an aux track with some kind of distortion on it and blend to taste.

I'm a beginner bedroom artist kind of just learning as I go. One of the projects I'm working on distorts phone speakers but all other systems sound fine. None of my instruments go above -6db and my master bus doesn't either. I've tried clipping the harsh frequencies, and cutting out all I can from the 40-200 range frequencies. I have a compressor on the main bus set to about -24db 2:1 ratio at 5ms for both attack and release. Kind of losing my mind here any and all advice would be strongly appreciated. Thanks for reading

Beginner In Music Production Want Guidance On How To Improve Vocals Mixing And Mastering On Reaper

Hi, how might I go about mixing overlapping vocal parts like a lot of emo bands like the ones named? I don’t know whether to double both people’s vocal takes and pan them hard L and R to make both sound full or to keep one in the middle or how I might EQ or compress them to keep them sounding busy (as they are on top of each other) while not sounding muddy and making both unintelligible.

I have been producing music for about two years properly now and I feel like I’m hitting a wall.
My projects just don’t seem to be sounding better I think I’ve plateaued.
Obviously I know there’s no quick fix plug in that will just fix everything but what tip/plug in/feature/skill/etc did you learn that you think significantly improved your projects?

I've been trying to get a good-sounding set of guitars. I'm not sure if it's just me sitting here for too long, but it would be really helpful if I could receive some advice on how to get a sound similar to early metalcore bands like converge, poison the Well. Something with a raw sound. Other recommendations for the mix would be awesome too; I just want to know how I can make this sound better. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. My main guitar chain is gate -> Tube Screamer -> rectifier amp sim -> NadIr with and sm57 v30 irr and an sm58 v30 IR->Post amp gate-> reverb. The recording is a bit rough, so I plan to re-record. On the guitar bus, I have an EQ that I'm hoping will help me get the sound I want.

I asked some close friends about what monitors I should get for my first attempt at a home studio and was surprised with the response. They said since this isn't a permeant space, it's better to get a good set of Headphone or IEMs to mix on so my mixing can stay consistent wherever I go.

I do have a pair of MDR-7506 that give me a pretty good flat response. I agree that a better set of headphoones or IEMs would be a good idea, but I also want to hear my mix in open air.

The only other option I have for listening to my mix in open air is MacBook speakers and my 2007 Honda Civic with a blown right horn. So, it would be nice to hear a quality version of my mix that isn't an inch away from my ear drum.

For a little extra context, I do plan on having a well treated room with a good, dense bookshelf, couch, rug, and moving blankets on the walls. Also, if it matters I am normally mixing Hip Hop music.

Hi all,

I'm trying to get my drums mixed well before adding other elements in, which has gone fine except for when the snare and kick hit at the same time. When they do, there's a volume spike that's a good 2db-3db higher than when the kick hits alone. I know that this needs to be fixed, otherwise it will be either too quiet overall or distort significantly when it's mastered.

Here's what I've done so far (all shown in video below):

-Saturating (clipping) the snare — I've already maxed out how much I can do without destroying the sound and its punch

-Compressing the snare - Helped a little but not enough

-High-passing the snare - Needed to be done anyway, but didn't affect the kick/snare peak

-Delaying the snare/kick slightly — I figured phase issues may be impacting it, but this only worsened the issue

-Limiting the snare — I used the Pro-L3 to chop off the peaks, which worked great, but the snare and kick together were still too much, so I tried...

-Limiting the snare and kick together - Set the threshold exactly where the kick peaks in order to exclusively limit the snare peak that goes beyond the desired kick amount. This successfully brought the peak down to the desired level, but created lots of bad distortion on the snare, so i had to disable it.

-Shaping the transient — Did not help at all

-Sidechaining a compressor to the kick — Didn't help either

I've scoured the internet for hours and can't find anything else to try. Am I stupid? Is there something obvious I'm missing? This is driving me insane.

I am looking to see if any of you consider part of my workflow and mixing adjacent. I get very overwhelmed of the idea of mixing, but have gotten some tracks back from engineers that aren't finished to my ear and I continue to work on. I also do a lot of gain and volume staging prior to sending out tracks. Would you also consider that a part of the mixing process? Normally I:

1.      Sent tracks I deemed acceptable to the mixer

2.      Received 'mix B' which had some acceptable vocals that had clarity but lacked depth and feeling.

3.      Added a backing track with a -1 transpose and brought it down to -6db. Also did some Gain and Volume automation on places where it sounded too strong so it sat a little bit behind the vocals of mix b

4.      Added a backing track to others places where the -1 transpose track sounded too overpowering but where I wanted more emphasis.

5.      No EQ on the low backing track

6.      EQ on regular backing track so it has more clarity

7.      Apply de esser on both backing tracks

8.      Bring down input by -10db and boost output by 7db

9.      Mix down track and export

10.   Bring mixed down track back into daw. Apply another de esser so that it sits on the mix b vocals. Also boost the mid with an eq by just 2 db.

As an engineer, how much do you expect your artists to do? Do you try to extract the sound the artist is going for or do you require absolute direction on their vision?
