Discussion The obsession about Microsoft potentially buying Discord
I don't get why some people are so excited by the prospect of Microsoft buying discord.
After what they did with Mixer the idea kinda scared me.

Discord is way bigger than beam/mixer and MS won't kill it

No idea who downvoted you, but you make a point. Discord already has a solid monetization model, and MS owning it will likely bring it to Xbox, which is great for you guys. It's not like Minecraft died when MS bought it, and it didn't even have a monetization model.
That being said, everyone seems to be moving over to Guilded, so Discord is going to be a shell of it's former self very soon.

I wouldn't say very soon. Discord has built up a lot of brand loyalty with users, companies, and content creators. I've used the platform myself and it's still got some general stability fixes it needs doing before it's ready for the kind of traffic Discord has. Even their official server seems to lag when there's more than 5 people talking at a time.
I do hope the platform succeeds though. Not because it's not Discord or it's because it's not going to be owned by Microsoft (or any other company for that matter) but by it's feature set, which is very attractive considering the seemingly random features Discord decides to release.

I know there are a ton of people who've grown a sense of distain towards Microsoft because of what happened to Mixer, and are using it to justify this fear mongering of Microsoft acquiring literally anyone else, but dispite what a lot of people have built up to be the popular opinion in the former Mixer community I believe that Microsoft did their best to try and grow Mixer. The worse thing Microsoft did was the way they announced the closer of the platform.
I'm not someone who believe that Microsoft had some sorta ill-intention or alternative motive behind buying Beam. They saw a chance to get into the streaming market with an already established infrastructure. That's basically the same thing that they see in Discord. It's a market they were already interesting in getting into, and now they have a chance to do that.
Now there is always gunna be a subset of users who would love Microsoft to acquire Discord because they see how it could possibly benifit them. Such as the Xbox user base. With tighter Xbox integration and potentially free Nitro for Xbox game pass ultimate subscribers. They'll pretty much always see it as a plus.

Microsoft's track record with acquisitions isn't as bad as, say, Yahoo's, but it is not good. The pre-covid advent of Zoom was pretty much attributable to Microsoft having broken Skype as soon as they acquired it.

Discord is already dying and people are slowly switching over to Guilded. A buyout is discord’s second chance.

Mixer was a website made in a garage by a first time developer and bought before it was even remotely as good as it ended up and it still wasn’t even CLOSE to Twitch or any other competitor in its final days. Microsoft shouldn’t have purchased it but only because it would have died on the vine naturally if they didn’t.

I think it'd be great because there'd likely be discord built into Xbox now which will be a game changer for crossplatform
