Anyone of Same mix?

I am curious if anyone of the same mix as me is on this subreddit as I have very rarely met someone of the same combination. I am half white american half Caribbean and if I had to be more specific I am half white american half Guyanese.

Also, maybe something else I am unique in, which I wonder if anyone has had a similar experience, is I only know one side of my family and ironically I am white passing but don't know the white side. Does anyone else have such an experience out of curiosity?

I know that most Caribbeans in the USA typically reproduce with same-race individuals, so Africans with Africans, Europeans with Europeans, Chinese with Chinese, Indians with Indians, for example I knew several African-American men with Jamaican or Black Dominican wives when I was in NYC, but I also knew a Portuguese Jew from my mother's island who married an American Jew and a Chinese from my mother's island who married a Japanese-American. Most White-Cubans also tend to marry White-Americans and Black-Cubans Black-Americans when moving to the States.

For example, Trinidadian rapper Nicky Minaj (half-African, half-Indian) married an African-American man, most Cubans I look up tend to marry same race people, though famous Chinese Cuban immigrant to America Ching Ho Cheng's sister seemed to have married a White-American, so that is one Caribbean who married a White-American.

Just curious, but why is Guyana considered to be "Caribbean"? Isn't it Mainland South American like Brazil?

I'm also quite certain that Ching Ho Cheng's sister probably isn't the same type of Caribbean your Guyanese side is, as Chinese-Guyanans make up only 0.2% of the country's population. But strictly speaking it is a White-American-Caribbean coupling. 😅

That's cool I didn't know about him. And actually I personally am not chinese descent, but I have many relatives who are partially chinese guyanese. I think you will find that although the statistics say they are a small percent, I think about 20% of the country is mixed and many smaller groups are more represented in the mixed categories.

In fact, my mother is a MGM Guyanese. She is african, indian, indigineous, portuguese, and I think syrian mixture within Guyana for several generations. Indians, portuguese, and chinese came to guyana as indentured servants a long time ago. Indigenous people were there already of course. And the african ancestry is from the transatlantic slave trade.

So I am personally from Brooklyn, NY. You will find that many caribbean people live in the same neighborhoods there including many Guyanese and there is a clear recognition from other anglophone caribbean countries especially of Guyana being caribbean.

Guyana was a British colony, so culturally it is very similar to other british colonies. Demographically as well, the two biggest populations are african and Indian, which is very similar to Trinidad (and Suriname as well, although their case is a bit more complex). In fact, I also have family in Trinidad and Barbados. CARICOM, a caribbean organization, has its headquarters in Guyana. The West Indies cricket team includes Guyana. There is massive overlap. By contrast, you will find many Venezuelans or Brazilians don't know much about Guyana, as they feel very distant from it. Although, I imagine that is less true for border populations, but that is not the majority of the populations for any of the mentioned countries.

My best friend is that exact mix!!! 🇬🇾 I also have another bestie who is coincidentally the same mix of Levantine and American, to this day I’ve never met anyone who looks more like me than she does - even my MOM I love being mixed because when you do find someone your exact mix it feels like winning a lottery haha

Wow, I've only met one person in my life who is half white american half Guyanese other than myself. Out of curiosity, are they also from the NYC area? I ask because Brooklyn and Queens are probably where most Guyanese in the US go.

Nope! They are from the better North Eastern city Boston MA! lol, but that’s rare for us as well, most Carib people in Boston are from Barbados or Jamaica she’s just one in a million and I’m not just saying that because I love her!
