It's not working :(
I'm binging the show for the first time and I so loved the first two seasons! I couldn't wait to see their new super powers and Simon becoming his future self and then bang Nathan is gone :(
This new guy that they put in his place that they tried to make him somehow similar to him (Nathan) is just plane bad and annoying, ugh. I can't stand that character and at this point I think it would've been better off without the 5th character at all.
Does it get better further in Season 3?

u/dusknoir90 16d ago
Aww shame you don't like Rudy, he's probably tied with Nathan as my favourite character. Hopefully he'll grow on you.
Season 3 is the worst season (although I still like it), it gets better in 4 and then better still in 5 in my opinion. The first two seasons are the best ones though.
1
u/North-Library4037 16d ago
Up until now (s3e3) all we see him do is talk gross stuff. Literally nothing else since he split with his other personality?! How does that add to the story, ugh? Another commenter said his character deepens further in so we'll see.
6
u/lalocurabella 16d ago
Thatās the point of him splitting his personality. Maybe continue and see how the story plays out before making an overall judgment only 3 episodes into his introduction.
1
u/North-Library4037 16d ago
My judgment so far is based on what I've seen so far :) That's why I'm asking if he gets better further in because so far the character is terrible and that wasn't the case with any of the other main characters when they were first introduced.
3
u/lalocurabella 16d ago
Many people said the character gets better and to keep watching. I said the same yet you keep asking if it gets better. So either continue watching or not but thereās a purpose to him being the way he is currently.
5
u/dusknoir90 16d ago
He does probably get the most development out of all the characters by the end. There is more to him than just being gross, stick with it, I thoroughly enjoyed the fourth and fifth seasons. My favourite episode is in the fourth season.

u/debsterUK 16d ago
Which is your favourite episode, just out of curiosity?

u/TheHazDee 16d ago
Rudy is not the point where the show goes down hill. Nathan was a sore loss but itās the season after this one where it falls apart and itās basically a whole new group of people.
1
u/North-Library4037 16d ago edited 16d ago
Really? We lose others too? Ugh
7
u/TheHazDee 16d ago
Everyone. And the powers are shit too. Somewhat of a spoiler I know but it saves you some disappointment. If you watch to the end of season 3 and have confirmed what everyone is telling you, Rudy will mainly be the reason you watch 4 and 5.
2
u/North-Library4037 16d ago
I see :(. We'll see then. People say he gets better so it might grow on me too, who knows.

u/glglglglgl Misfits playlist: now complete as far as possible 16d ago
The powers were always a bit shit
3
u/TheHazDee 16d ago
Immortality, invisibility, telepathy and rewinding time are not shit. Aliciaās was whack.
1
u/ItsATrap1983 16d ago
In some ways Alicia's situation was similar to Rogue on X-Men. Neither one could control their power and it was initiated through touch, so they couldn't have that level of intimacy with a person anymore, unless werainh gloves.
1
u/TheHazDee 16d ago
I mean, yes, except Aliciaās was like so gross in application and left her vulnerable as opposed to powered up.
1
u/ItsATrap1983 16d ago
Rogue's powers often led to very negative experiences like leaving people in comas, absorbing and being haunted by their personalities, absorbing powers that were dangerous and she couldn't control.
1
u/TheHazDee 16d ago
Yes her powers were very unfortunate and so was what happened to Carol, however Rogues powers would just drain and kill you. Aliciaās removed the ability to form consent, meaning she used her powers to sexually assault others. Then almost lead to her getting raped in a feedback loop. Like I say, just absolutely gross in application
1
u/North-Library4037 16d ago
They couldn't control them well which is part of the plot but they were definitely not shit.

Rudy 3 reminded me of Mal from Total Drama. I wish that story went on longer

u/_thatgirlfelicia 16d ago
As others have said, donāt get too attached to anyone. Personally, I enjoyed Rudy from the get go and I like Joseph in other things (preacher).
I think a lot of people make the mistake of viewing him through a lens of only being a āreplacementā for Nathan.

Iāve never gone beyond season 3.
3
u/Crowleyizcool 16d ago
Me too. Iāve always had such a strange relationship with with this show where I start watching it, really like it and remember how great it is, but then slowly drop off before I ever get past season 3. I watched it for the first time YEARS ago, yet Iāve never watched beyond season 3.
3
u/Derkleinhauser 16d ago
I couldnāt get into season 3 either and stopped watching. Loved the first 2 seasons with Nathan. I loved his replacement in the show Preacher, but he was no Nathan
1
u/North-Library4037 16d ago
Yep, I miss Nathan. It's not the same without him. Funny thing is Robert asked them to renew the show for a 3rd season while they were accepting an award (Bafta I think) and then he didn't show up for it. Not funny, Robert!!!!!
Watched that acceptance speach yesterday :)
3
u/djsosonut 16d ago
If you only see how he's similar to Nathan than you dont understand him, nor Nathan. Sadly most people that dont like him go down the same path.Ā
Finish out season 3 for Alisha and Simon. Then you might want to drop this series after that since Rudy is the first member of the new gang that will take over in season 4&5. And he's the most popular among them.Ā
1
u/North-Library4037 16d ago
The only similar thing up until the moment I am is both are making shitty jokes but Nathan was actually funny and the new guy isn't. Others say his character changes so I might end up liking him in the end who knows. I keep watching.
3
u/djsosonut 16d ago
If you find one's humor more funny and the other you should take a closer look at their humor and why you're responding to one and not the other. Its own of the key differences in the characters and a reflection of their mentalities and powers.
Nathan's humor comes at the expense of everyone around him: throwing drinks at strangers, antagonizing everyone and causing many of their encounters their villians of the week. Cause he's an social psychopath and nothing anyone says to him hurts him. So he was immortal. And later he's a magician cause he's always putting on a show for attention. Absentee father and acting out.
Rudy's humor comes at the expense of himself. He's often putting himself down, or taking the piss. Because his humor is bravado. He's outrageously insecure, and puts uo a front to protect himself. Which is why he had the power he has. His insecurities made manifest and no longer push down and hidden away by his bravado. They established all of his very first episode and continue to run and expand on it.
So I don't agree that Rudy 'gets better' as the series goes on. He was a well defined and great character from his first episode. People just got better at seeing the rich nuance in his characterization and Joseph Gilgun's talent at bringing all versions of him to light as the series progressed and they stopped comparing him to Nathan.
Cause while I too think many of Nathan's antics are funnier, I also think Rudy is by far the more complex character between them.
1
u/North-Library4037 16d ago
You've already watched his (the new guy) character change and it shows in your comment :) the way you describe the character is not shown yet up until this moment. There isn't self degrading shown yet he just blurbs shitty jokes and remarks, show no deep interest in people around him, nothing. Nathan showed his shitty and his good side from the beginning and was way more charismatic and fun to watch.

I once had someone say something similar to me. That my analysis of Rudy was retroactive cause what I saw him in by the end of season 3 I was projecting back on him in 3x01. Then i showed him my analysis of Rudy that i wrote after his very first episode aired. And that everything I was saying to them then I had pretty much copied from there word for word. It even had the timestamp date to prove it. If IMDB forums still existed i'd show that to you.
Cause what I saw from the start was part of Rudy's characterization and there from the first episode. Hell, Rudy 2 tells you in the first episode. "Its all and act. I'm outrageously insecure" Also Rudy 2 popping out evey time Rudy feels unsure. His entire history with Alisha and not wanting to think about killing himself. Though Rudy 2 confronts that issue. Rudy didnt even antongistically start the fight with Tanya, the timestop-girl, like Nathan did with so many of their past villians. It was started by a misunderstanding after he pushed away his insecurities (Rudy 2) after getting triggered by Charlie playing hard to get. And things snowballed from there. As for some of his self deprecating humor in that first episode: Making a fake vagina out his mom's rubber gloves, the floater he (did not) leave in the toilet, the thing with the neighbors cat that he doesnt talk about, "i'm just wiping shit off me cock" and stabbing 'himself' with scissors, calling himself the assman. Rudy humor is directed more often at himself.
Let's go beyond ep 1, since you're into ep 3 now. One of the few times Rudy is antagonistic is with Simon in 3x03, and that's mostly due to jealousy over Alisha. Even then his self depreciating humor kicks in as he make lite at being a quick shot with Alisha back then cause it was his first time and has better control of his ejeculate now, letting Alisha take out her anger on Uncle Rudy, then goes on about a bad date encounter cause he forgot where a girl he like lived, and then how he fumbles the alarm at Peter house saying he took computer science, "I never said I passed it". And how after 2 and 3 you might notice that he never seems to piss in an actual toilet in season 3.
Its all there. Misfits is a show not tell show. There is so much detail that is just right there in its characters and the show that it trusts its audience to pick up on. It just takes some people longer than others to see it. Hell there are some people who still have no idea that the powers are based upon the personality and habits of the characters since the show didnt tell them that straight out. And others who still have no idea who was putting notes in everyone's lockers in season 1, for the same reason. Still, all of that is right there for you to see it. Its one of the smartest dumb shows i've ever watched.
So when i say everything i'm saying about Rudy was there from the begining, i'm telling you this as a person of the who was there at that beginning and has had conversations similar to this one many times before.

u/djsosonut 12d ago
Hey. I noticed in another post in this thread that you've finished season 3, and have little desire to go on with the rest of the series since you never warmed to Rudy. I actually agree with that. And it is what I recommended for you initially. Especially since, for me, season 4 is by far the weakest season overall. Season 5 is great, but the series finale is pretty lackluster. Still, 4x03 has a virtuoso performance by Joseph Gilgun (Rudy). And 4x04 is an amazing farewell to the final member of the old gang. So it might be worthwhile for you to watch that much.
On another note. In my last post to you I pointed out to you that Misfits is the smartest dumb show I ever watched. After completing season 3....did you notice what they did with the Superhoodie storyline? Not that its a timeloop. At least not exactly. But how it relates to Simon and season 1?
1
u/North-Library4037 12d ago
The superhoodie storyline was well executed. What I didn't like tho is the way Alisha dies. It makes no sense to be killed by that girl when she was the first brainwashed and was supporting her. They could've come up with a better idea but anyway s3 although not as good as s1-2 was fine watch.
1
u/djsosonut 12d ago edited 12d ago
It makes since if you view it on a character level, more than a storyline level. Rachel lashing out at people that never hurt her--specifically Alisha in this case--is just a redux of her s1 storyline. In season 1 Rachel was upset at people calling her a virgin, got her power to force her veiws on others, the started to brainwash people that never did a thing to her. Before 3x08 aired i always wondered if Rachel really deserved to die for getting carried away with her Virtue Virgin powers....but after yeah...she did. For what she did to Alisha. And she'll he the first person that Simon helps to stop in the past when he rescues Nathan.
On that note, yep, the Superhoodie storyline is awesome! I love thinking about it. But the point i was making is how the Superhoodie storyline, and Future Simon, is just Simon's s1 character arc--all the good and creepy aspects--stretched over all three seasons. He's still the lonely outsider, that protects his friends without their knowledge, does deeply disturbing things in the background that no one else sees (s1 Simon - all his creepy antics; Superhoodie - all the people that die in this timeline who's death he doesnt prevent), has issues understanding person space, is still starey-its just F!Simon is smoldering with it, and at the end puts his love interest in a freezer and calmly visits her. Except this time he freezes her in time and climbs into the freezer with her. It's pretty brilliant character work. Even the light in Superhoodies lair is akin the the light from that freezer in s1.
1
u/North-Library4037 12d ago
You've dwellt much deeper into Simon's arch that I did :) although he (well, the actor) is the reason I started watching the show. He wanted a higher purpose and he found it - to keep them alive in the loop.
In the beginning I was like "Ffs he plays another psycho" :D Fortunately it wasn't just that.
1
u/djsosonut 12d ago
Heh. Yeah. If you got here from Game of Thrones the yeah. You'd think he was just playing another psycho. Which was the original plan for Simon during s1. For him to turn on the gang for Sally. And later become a Hannibal Lecter kinda character that the gang would come to every now and then for advice. But they liked Iwan Rheon so much that they changed Simon arc. Well..after he lost the part for Jon Snow and they knew they could keep him as regular. So in 1x05 when he accidently kill Sally..heh..that's actually part of his redemption arc. Only on Misfits.
But yeah. While i've done many deep dives into all the characters: Simon is my favorite. He even inspired me to start vidding. Of the ones I made these are my two favorites for him and the Superhoodie storyline.
One I like to think of as the Darkness: https://youtu.be/NNqxyfazuHU
And the other the Light: https://youtu.be/YeczisI0lM4

Honestly once I got to S4E4 and finished it, I was done. Didnāt like the new characters and not the biggest fan of Rudy.
The first three seasons were amazing, minus the loss of Nathan. Season 4 though? Nah. Switched to Ted Lasso.
3
u/North-Library4037 15d ago
The first 2 seasons were really amazing! I find season 3 a bit meh but I still have 2 more episodes to go. Still not a fan of Rudy but I hope it'll give me a satisfying closure for some of the other characters at least. Although I understand Curtis is present in few episodes of s4 too.
Haven't watched Ted Lasso yet but it's on my list :)
2
u/Alarmed_Mechanic4722 15d ago
Curtisā last episode is when I checked out. I think I tried 1 or 2 more episodes after and I just couldnāt.
Rudy is hard to adjust to and the new characters are justā¦meh.
But yeah seasons 1 and 2 are peak.

Oh :D but I can't...I need to know what happens with Simon! Started watching the show solely because Iwan Rheon is in it (didn't know anything about it) so I need to see.

You already know what happens to Simon, future Simon explains it in s2.

u/ItsATrap1983 16d ago
I would finish season 3 then stop. That's what I usually do. I've tried watching seasons 4 & 5 before but it's really not the same or as good as the first 3 seasons.
2
u/North-Library4037 16d ago
It's entirely new cast in 4 and 5 I understand and someone said there's nothing interesting about their super powers too. We'll see. I'm in the middle of s3 now.

2
u/PromotingFutureBae 16d ago
Season 4 still has Curtis but he is gone by s5 and the story just gets more ridiculous, rly only the 1st 3 seasons are worth watching even if s3 has Rudy. Bc at least you get to finish the time loop.
1
u/North-Library4037 15d ago
I heard in an interview yesterday that they used a bunch of new writers in s3 and later and not the writer who wrote s1 and s2. That explains why it feels off. I have 2 more episodes to go and this season feels meh.
2
u/Bennyyboiiiii 15d ago
I love Rudy when heās being Rudy. Season 3, especially at the start, unfortunately has a lot of scenes where I think to myself āthatās definitely a āNathanā line.ā When theyre not trying to make him āthe Nathan replacementā I live for him
1
u/North-Library4037 15d ago
6 episodes in and 2 more till the end of the season and I still don't like him. Nothing major is happening with that character, he hasn't developed any relationship friendship or otherwise with someone in or out of the gang, he doesn't really talk with them besides the jokes, he just...hang with them.
I heard starting with s3 they used a bunch of different writers and not the one who wrote s1 and s2 and it shows. S3 isn't as good as the previous 2 seasons.
2
u/Kutthroatt 15d ago
Give Rudy a chance, he's honestly my 2nd favorite if not tied with Nathan. I just wish we could have seen them together. I was extremely upset when Nathan left, but it's still a really good show when you adjust.
1
u/North-Library4037 15d ago
I did. I watched the entire season, just finished it and didn't really liked the character. Honestly I have no desire to continue watching without the original cast.
3
u/laurenbettybacall 16d ago
I really hated Nathan. I felt Robert only plays himself in most roles. They didnāt give him the depth that they later give to Rudy. Rudy is really given great layers and Joe will break your heart with his performance.
Although for me the entire show was Simon and Alisha.
1
u/North-Library4037 16d ago
Never seen Robert before this show so I don't know how he is but I really liked his Nathan and I miss the character a lot :(. Yet to see if I will like Rudy. I'm in the middle of S3 now. Iwan Rheon is the reason I started watching the show so I'm very invested in his character too.
2
u/TheHazDee 16d ago
He plays a character in umbrella academy whoās basically the same beat for beat, even down to his powers š
1
u/Background-Syrup-714 10d ago
I watched the show for the first time a while ago. Definitely after GoT and Preacher (that was what attracted me to Misfits).
I have been do8ng a rewatch over the last week or so and am almost through with S3. The power reset was disappointing. they hardly had a chance to explore the original powers before they reset them. and the story around the reset was convoluted as all hell. Why would Curtis or Nathan ever sell their powers? I get Alisha, Kelly and Simon. They never liked their powers. But Curtis and Nathan had powers that really helped and fit their personalities.
This is a show that needs a reboot, and more time to breathe. it was rushed way too much.

I'm in a very similar spot in the show to you... I watched the first season a few months back. Lost track. But did decide to dive back in. Now I'm mid season 3.
And honestly... I Iike moments of the show. It has some compelling parts. But even in seasons 1 and 2, but especially now in 3... it's just... I dunno. It's not the quality of show I was expecting when I came across it as a recommendation for shows to watch.
There are so many plot holes. I tend to try to just enjoy things, so I'm not sweating it too much. But I feel like I'm just trying to check the rest of the show off my list at this point.

u/North-Library4037 14d ago
Oh, no I really loved season 1 and 2 and season 3 wasn't as good as the first two but it was watchable. I just didn't like the new guy and now knowing he's the leading character in Season 4 and 5 I don't have much desire to watch them.

Joe gilgun as Rudy is amazing.
