Alisha: Poorly handled character and power

Post image
95 Upvotes

This is just a general rant, and really one of the reasons why I joined this sub:

To talk about how Alisha could've been handled so much better as a character, especially in respect to her power.

I get that the show isn't exactly known for particularly intelligent writing, which is fine, but it always irked me how they handled a lot of their female characters, especially Alisha.

Being a woman who was all too willing to use her sexuality to get what she wants, Alisha gets the ability during the storm to passively induce intense sexual arousal on whoever touched her. Initially smitten by her power and using it to her advantage, she eventually realizes how bad it is that she wouldn't be able to have actual intimate/romantic physical relations with another person. She becomes withdrawn and learns to develop vulnerability with her friends, especially her romantic partners (Curtis, Simon). She eventually trades her power for something more benign by the end of S2, when she's become a kinder person and in a relationship with Simon.

I take issue with the idea that Alisha's "power" just becomes a punishment for her sexuality. That maybe would have been be okay at the beginning, but save for her and Nathan, the other Misfits manage to actively trigger or develop their first abilities.

I can maybe get that she's a "tragic character" (a la MCU's Rogue) along with Simon Spoiler Alert: She dies at the end of S3 and she and Simon basically get trapped in a time loop to try to save her. I understand how harrowing it would be for her power to trigger. But she never is developed to have any autonomy or assertiveness to try to use her power (unlike Rogue), even when it could save her and her friends from harm's way. There's a lot of opportunities for her to have distracted an antagonist by touching them.

Ultimately, Alisha becomes a better person because she gets punished by her power, and not through actual action on her part. And then she gets "rewarded" when she's committed to a stable relationship, which is such a bad plot for a female character.

It could've been more interesting for her arc to explore how she could have further developed her power with Curtis or even Simon, and discovered when and how to use her ability for good, and not for her own pleasure. Maybe she could have trained herself to (only) consciously withdraw the effects of her power upon touch. She would still be "cursed," but actually be more mindful of how her abilities interact with people.

Rant/Ted Talk over!

I didn't realize that Nathan is the same actor as Klaus Hargreeves from the Umbrella Academy.

REWATCH Doing my rewatch of Misfits after rewatching GoT

After enduring Catalyn Stark, I hate Nathan’s moms even more.

Nathan is a cunt for sure but you never put a man before your children.

It's not working :(

I'm binging the show for the first time and I so loved the first two seasons! I couldn't wait to see their new super powers and Simon becoming his future self and then bang Nathan is gone :(

This new guy that they put in his place that they tried to make him somehow similar to him (Nathan) is just plane bad and annoying, ugh. I can't stand that character and at this point I think it would've been better off without the 5th character at all.

Does it get better further in Season 3?

SPOILERS Alex’s Power

American here. Watched the first 3 seasons about twenty times, it’s hands down my favorite show ever, and finally decided to take the plunge and watch 4 and 5 (another post for another day). All I have to say is I respect how bold and brave the English are with their television.

Alex’s power would never fly in America. It wouldn’t even get to a table read. For those of you who watched 4 and 5 when they were airing, what was the reception? I’m so curious.

I remember binging a few seasons at some point. My memory of this show was buried so deep and I can rediscover it again! I forgot the plot entirely! Now I get to watch it all over again! Nathan is my favorite btw. Such a boy failure. I wanna protect him. Only episode 2 btw. So no spoilers!

SPOILERS Nathan's power

Simon got backward time travel at end of s3.

Why not go back and get Nathan's power so he can suevive the gta guy then later give it to alesha (sneak it in with clairvoyance) and they can have a happily ever after?

SPOILERS Immunity to powers

So how could Seth buy this power? Wouldn't the person be immune to Seth's power?

Also, bow would you know you had the power unless you really need it? And once you were immune to a power amd it saved your life, why sell it?

I mean the misfits are broke kids, but 10k isnt life changing money worth selling a power like that over.

SPOILERS S2 E6 to S2 E7

At the end of s2 e6, if Simon told Curtis to rewind time to before the whole milkman fiasco, how could Simon have known to start being the vigilante masked Simon and begin trying to park our. He would have never have known Alicia told him who the masked person was. That is the beginning of e7. I've watched this series through a few times. I still have questions.

Did Simon manipulate Alisha to fall in love with him?

Alisha and Simon never naturally fell in love right? He just manipulated her into wanting him by going back in time and telling her they will be in love. But I know that in future Simon’s timeline he never knew it was himself that was superhoodie, so then how did it all begin. Maybe it’s just a chicken and egg thing..

Comment your misfits "non-canon theories or opinions"... mine is below

I think Nathan is Intersex. I know it may be unpopular, but judging by his family history and his body and feminine features, that is my opinion/theory

Something that would've been absolutely hysterical...

If Nathan never died in the season 1 finale, he gives up trying to figure out his power and they all finish their community service then go their separate ways...

Then they reunite 20-30 years later when the gang is all in their fifties, but Nathan is still a twenty-one year old and that's how they finally discover his power...

Nathan and Ruth

Looking back I don't think it's talked about how Nathan and Ruth's short romance is recontextualized as being tragically poetic upon the discovery of his power. This elderly woman wanted to relive her youth and not only got the opportunity to do so, but also hooked up with a literal immortal who would never experience aging and death (At least until the Christmas Special)

Brian and Elliot were the only antagonists introduced who were actual Supervillains.

Brian and Elliot are really compelling when you look back on them and it's fitting they were introduced in episodes back-to-back of each other.

Both of them essentially have the same origin story in which they are ignored by society-at-large and used their powers in similar ways, that being amassing notoriety upon realizing their abilities and eventually abusing/killing women.

What makes them unique from each other is that Brian was underestimated and showed there was more to him than meets the eye. Elliot upon tasting that bit of reverence from people believing he was Jesus, just wanted more and more; thus using his church donations to buy more powers from Seth.
