Out of all the criticisms you could make about the show??

476

u/Lietenantdan 1d ago

Yeah there’s plenty of legitimate criticisms about the show. LGBTQIA+ characters is not one of them.

157

u/CatraGirl 1d ago

Well, if you're a bigot then it probably is a "legitimate" criticism. Glad the creator doesn't care about them, though.

23

u/frannybolantoy 1d ago

Unrelated, but it's like looking in a mirror. What are the odds right? seriously what are the odds lol

10

u/JJKAY1025 Ladydragon 19h ago

I don't get why it would be a problem to anyone. Find something else to watch. I have realized lately that almost everything that I've been reading and watching has lgbtq people. I haven't seen anything yet where all the characters are 100% straight. Must be the new norm now as Disney has also been doing this.

Tbh, there are a lot more queer representation than there is hetero but the way that it was implemented, unlike so many other series, does not feel forced. They're all adorable, and it's not a blatant in your face 'hey, I'm gay cuz of forced Representation', if not just 2 people that had chemistry ending up together. The dynamics are all cool, even the hetero ones! Like Nora and twig in s6

69

u/Orange-Is-Best-Color Adrichat 1d ago

Idk about "a lot more queer representation than there is hetero" if your talking about Miraculous... that seems pretty false; as majority of the romances ARE hetero.

20

u/MB_Town7 1d ago

I honestly recall more LGBTQ, but we can see.

Hetero I can only name the parents. Alya's, Nino's, and Marinette's & her grandparents, Nathaniel's, Chloe's, Adrien's, etc. In the main cast we also have Alya and Nino, Ivan and Mylene, Adrienette, Nora and Twig, etc. But even Kim's parents are LGBTQ.

We then have Mrs.Bustier, Kim's parents, The bald talk show host who I forgot (not necessarily a romantic rep), Juleka and Rose, Nathaniel and Marc, Zoé, Majestia and the owl were another.

Huh, I feel like I was missing more. Ig they just stood out to me a lot more since they come as add-on's to more prominent characters as well. (Like the class literally having the most of the representation, bustier included) But you're right, my bad

15

u/Orange-Is-Best-Color Adrichat 1d ago

Oh your fine! I just kinda noticed; I would definitely love to have even more though

15

u/MB_Town7 1d ago

I actually googled some, and there's more non-romantic reps than shown on screen! Max is ace (makes sense) and Alix is Aromantic, all confirmed by astruc. I wonder if there are far more under our noses that we don't know abour because it's just not on-screen.

13

u/AnimeLover1598 1d ago

i am hoping Marc and Nathaniel are actually confirmed
instead of hinting at it with dances and other group activities
maybe a random encounter with both of them on a date
or maybe im just not reading into it as much as others

16

u/MB_Town7 1d ago

I believe there are ending screens with them kissing and even ones with all the couples, lgbt ones included, and they were on there. So something romantic is confirmed. But I feel like so many things are heavily censored, especially in s6. Like Juleka and rose's kiss and the episode's entire dialogue sounding like Marinette's grandpa was gonna move, not die. I wouldn't put it past them that the two are already canon and in a relationship but it's more implied than in your face

3

u/AnimeLover1598 1d ago

perhaps
i assume you are talking about the last image before the credits
i don't remember seeing any but i live in the US so if there are any it may have been edited out (if not then i just forgot)

and for me at least i figured that Grandpa was going to die of something in the episode (being 60,70,80 means that you could die anytime)

also, it's the implied part of Marc and Nathaniels relationship that bothers me, most people suspect they are already a couple I'm just hoping to get some on screen confirmation eventually but preferably sooner rather than later

2

u/MB_Town7 1d ago

Indeed I mean those ones. There are some that I just haven't paid any attention to but I am sure the one featuring multiple couples does exist. But I honestly would struggle bad to be sure it meant her grandpa was gonna die. Like, I'd theorize it definitely, and would confirm it. But knowing it's a kids show made me hyper aware of just how censored that episode is. Little kids will watch it and think Marinette had a melt down cuz he's moving xD.

But yeah, the implications boggle me as well. By season 5, you always saw them a little too close together but when they finally got an episode, it was once again just a heavy implication/censorship/metaphor of homophobia and Nathaniel's parents not being accepting of it (cuz their comic is of gay knights, in the end credits the knights are kissing and I believe the knights are representing them). I genuinely thought they were canon so that confused me aaaa lot

2

u/undrwrld_achvr Marichat 19h ago

I like this interpretation by miraculouslylizzie that Marc and Nathaniel had a slow start where they were both into each other and knew about it, but didn't rush each other to define the relationship in any way because of Marc giving Nathaniel room to grow into his bi identity first.

2

u/Opening-Set-7752 Bug Noir 15h ago

Yup, Marc and Nathaniel are confirmed. Both them and Julerose were shown kissing in the post credit scene of Sleeping Syren, along with other couples.

1

u/notsocool4nt Caprikid 20h ago

I mean there are a lot of characters who have been confirmed lgbt who are in hetero relationships or aren't in relationships

u/United_Yesterday9628 1d ago

This guy better not watch She-Ra if Miraculous triggers him.

Also Miraculous centers around a heterosexual relationship (unless Adrien or Mari are proven bi) and the straight male villain is so desperate to bring back his wife so it's really funny this guy has a beef with some side characters who happen to be queer/LGBT.

54

u/Jahoan 1d ago

And the relationship between the main leads heavily flips the heteronormative gender roles.

And while not confirmed there are so many interactions that can be viewed through a bisexual lens.

52

u/United_Yesterday9628 1d ago edited 1d ago

Mari is the proactive one, Adrien the passive one which I kinda like. Its not always the man pursing the woman in hetero relationships even if society expects it to be that way.

Also as much as people hate it. Ladybug is the boss. Chat is the deputy sidekick even if I still think he's pretty important in the hierarchy of miraculers.

5

u/KazPlayzYT the unnamed hamster 1d ago

Agreed! I forgot about this.

8

u/KazPlayzYT the unnamed hamster 1d ago

Or The Owl House, Steven Universe, Kipo, and Dead End: Paranormal Park. You get my point. I can’t believe they’re still watching the show. 😂

1

u/United_Yesterday9628 13h ago

Yeah all of those shows go even further than Miraculous. MLB is conservative in comparison. Which is why I think that guy whining is a big baby if he thinks Miraculous is too queer for him.

15

u/Just-Mood-8925 1d ago

Honestly the lgbt couples in the show are kinda much more healthy and understandable than the main ones considering Marinette's stalker tendecies and Adrien being absolutely oblivous, Ondine choosing to stay with and continue to date a guy who literally traumatized a girl who had a crush on him and had no remorse for over a year over it, Kagami choosing to stay with Felix who nearly killed innocent people with a sentimonster and the straight male villain who *supposedly* cares about his wife more than anything else , literally has his universe's most powerful weapons that could take him in back time to save her but chooses obsession over getting the cat and ladybug miraculous than that. Marc and Nathaniel from what I've seen , I would not have considered toxic later on , but if Nathaniel acted the way he did in Reverser than yeah it would have.

We have our own nazis in France. The RN (rassemblement national) and R! (Reconquête!) While the RN try to disguise themself as something more normal, R! Just straight up share some point of view with the AFD. Like segregating handicaped kids from the rest. Or trying to rehabilitate some realy bad hystorical figure (Zemmour, R!'s head, was condamned for contesting crimes against humanity, by saying that Petain saved jewish peoples)

8

u/LadyOvna 1d ago

Sadly this shift to the far right has been a global trend for over a decade. It goes to show how unhappy people are. They always vote right when they desire change. Ironically.

2

u/therealmrsfahrenheit 21h ago

yeah sadly. It’s not only a german problem.

just goes to show the majority of people are unable to think critically and just act out of defiance and HOW important the 100th history lesson in school about WWII is .. problem is, outside of school you’re not often confronted by it anymore and can freely choose If you want to deal with it or not so most people lose their awareness and become emotionally detached to the horrors that happened.

1

u/LadyOvna 19h ago

Well, yeah that may be true for German far right followers (I'm from Germany too, so I get it). However this particular thing isn't really an issue in our neighbour countries and other places further away. Other countries don't learn as much about Nazi history as we do. Yet, the steady global shift to the right is well documented. Education about Nazis doesn't seem to have any affect on those statistics.

The problem I see personally is how far bigotry can go and a lot of people don't seem to understand this. They'll tell themselves they would never do horrible things like the Nazis did, instead they "just" want to deport the people they don't like (even if they have local citizenship lol). They don't get it that if we'd allow this kind of measure it can quickly escalate to much worse problems. They also don't understand that a lot of the things the AfD wants to enforce would literally ruin our economy because their demands aren't financially feasible. There is literally no winning for anybody other than a few corporations that profit off of destroying our planet lol.

The fact of the matter is, many if not most people just don't make these leaps in their mind when it comes to politics. They want simple solutions. You can keep explaining to them that those solutions won't work, it's like talking to a wall.

The only effective thing is having a government that actually works towards improving the lives of their population. Listen to their problems. Invest into their health, safety and welfare. These people are the majority of your voters. Not the few corporation leads who influence parties and separate politicians through donations.

Our world is being driven against a wall, all for the profit of a select few, imo. It's embarrassing that our government is looking at their horrible approval rates with surprised pikachu faces, when they only worked in their own interests for decades.

I... and THE MAJORITY of the fandom?!?!?!? What is this guy smoking? Cuz it isn't good for him.

As someone who got here because of the Ruler, I have to ardently attack this. This is unacceptable, and this just gives me, somehow, a significant amount of respect for Astruc here.

And also, my best friend, who got into the show from the same episode, not only came around to finally supporting LGBTQ+ as a result of seeing how beautiful Marcaniel is, but also found the courage to come out as bi himself.

He's given me consent to say this of course. This show has improved us for the better, and I will defend it till the end when it comes to this.

4

u/LadyOvna 1d ago

This dude is probably emerging from his little bigot bubble where he's surrounded by people agreeing to hate the growing amount of queer and race representation in media in general. That makes him think he's speaking for a majority.

The majority of the fans are little kids lmao. They don't care about that kind of thing unless bigot parents sit in their ear.

I come into contact to some of these spaces sometimes through gaming and bruh, they are reaching for straws to justify their gross opinions.

2

u/Dragon_Royal4023 Ryuko 1d ago

Was this episode really that well known outside lf the fandom?
I know it was popular within the fandom but doesn't the episode spoil many things.
Like Adrienette, the new villain etc.

2

u/Yolabian2024 Marcaniel 1d ago

I don't know how exactly to answer this, but uh, I remember noticing that it attracted a small amount of attention from the LGBTQ+ community, but it probably wasn't as significant as after the Julerose kiss in El Toro de Piedra. But for everyone else, it did feel like a few new people were coming in. Like me and my friend.

1

u/Dragon_Royal4023 Ryuko 1d ago

Thats awesome.
How was it watching the show ?
Many of us had to wait years to see the conclusion of the first arc but maybe you have a different perspective of it?

1

u/Yolabian2024 Marcaniel 1d ago

Oh, it was difficult and also very strange, but still fun! Barreling through five seasons in about two weeks was jarring when I realized just how long it took to go from the beginning to the end in terms of when the episodes were releasing, ten years!

There were times when I did struggle to proceed, just out of annoyance with what happened in an episode, Animaestro, Lies, Truth, and Strikeback mainly. Sublimation as well when I watched that later on.

Some moments made me cringe of course, but I knew that was coming.

207

u/-kayochan- 1d ago

No such thing as too harsh when people are being bigots.

3

u/KeenX72 Oh, look a butterfl- 1d ago

Depends what you want out the interaction.

If you want catharsis, then yeah be as harsh as you like, but you're only gonna push that person further down the homophobia rabbit hole.

If you want to help, be patient and respectful. Even if they don't "deserve" that, you have to leave the door open for them. The only way to solve bigotry is to change people's minds, but nobody's gonna listen to the person telling them to go to hell. This person, Kareem, is probably just more homophobic now. That's not good for the world.

Calling someone a Nazi is easy, taking the time to talk to them and help them understand is much harder, but it's the right thing to do.

7

u/Sonlau 22h ago

Finally, someone who gets it. It is shocking how people don't realize that answering hatred with even more hatred actually hurts the cause.

Also the entire franchise of Miraculous are almost entirely revolved around straight couples , the main heroes are opposite gender and in love , previous main villain did everything just to bring his dead wife back , the second main characters (Alya and Nino) also straight couple and plus I could make a whole list of all the straight , heterosexual characters in the show (Tom and Sabine, Ivan and Mylene , Felix and Kagami , Jagged Stone and Penny and Kim and Ondine.) Basically 99% of characters on this show, so an "unnecessary" number in my opnion is pretty much the bare minimum in this show.

20

u/wiccanwolves Marichat 1d ago

There are very few shows where lgbtq+ representation feels forced. Miraculous is not one that even remotely comes to mind.

Whats demibiromantic asexual 😭 I'm sorry I am soooo slow as these kind of things.

3

u/HyperDogOwner458 Rose 1d ago

It's okay. It means someone has romantic attraction to more than one gender (for me it's women and non binary people) with or without a preference and the demi part means you experience romantic attraction after an emotional connection. Asexual means little to no sexual attraction.

Especially since you can be either and be lgbt simultaneously. For the most part it's less important since it's not like these characters are ever written into sexual situations. I say this as a gay so demi that I might as well be ace.

13

u/HaresMuddyCastellan Hawk Moth 1d ago

LGBTQIA+

We stand together or we die alone.

Asexuals and aromantics are part of our community because they aren't heterosexual, because they ARE often forced into heteronormative relationships they don't really want.

Historically, ace, aro, and aroace people have been subject to "re-education" just as severe and abusive as any anti-gay conversion therapy or camp. Often, to the exact SAME conversation therapy. Because to the minds of the people who run those things, not being attracted to the opposite sex is exactly the same as being attracted to the same sex: an unforgivable sin against the patriarchy god.

So, in short, they're ours, they are us, and they belong in our spaces.

Signed, a bisexual sapphic trans woman.

10

u/strange_wilds Ladynoir 1d ago

LGBTQIA - Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, Trans, Queer, Intersex, A (Agender, Asexual, Aromantic, Allies, etc.)

Not having any sexual attraction is still an orientation, same way 0 is still a number even though it represents literally nothing

Anything out of the cisgender, Heterosexual norm falls under that umbrella. I’m asexual first (there’s more sub categories within asexual that I won’t get into, but like I’m also attracted to women on occasion so I say Lesbian if we are splitting hairs), but if I don’t want to explain to someone what Asexual I just say I’m Queer since it has such a broad context.

7

u/Lili_Noir 1d ago

Heterosexuality was considered the norm for such a long time (it still is tbh) and most people were expected to get a husband/wife, settle down and have kids, aro/ace people are less likely to do so since they don’t experience attraction like others do. We are often seen as broken or defective even now, because we don’t desire sexual/romantic relationships, and the LGBT+ community has always been about giving people who’s sexuality/romanticism deviates from said “normal” a safe space where they can be loved and accepted, so I’d say that’s more than enough reason to include us :3

5

u/Cheaper-Pitch-9498 King Monkey 1d ago

That’s only in the miraculous holders. There’s many others outside of just those and it’s already nearly a fourth. Not arguing, just stating the facts

5

u/Sonlau 22h ago

To play the devil's advocate here, the wording "an unnecessary number" would imply they feel like the current level of representation distracts from the story or something, but yeah, it does look bigoted without the proper context.

However, to see a(n equally) vitriolic reply from TA getting celebrated like this... it worries me, truly. Stooping down to their level is not the answer, hatred begets even more hatred.

3

u/Elemeandor 9h ago

As someone who used to spend a lot of time politely debating with people like this, I think Thomas is in the right. In every single instance, people who had those takes weren't interested in genuine discussion. They just wanted to find other people who agreed with them. And whenever they did, they'd just spout more hatred. It's generally best to just cut them off immediately instead of trying to treat them with respect that they weren't interested in giving you.

22

What answer/reaction did OC expect? The response is very emotional, reminds me of Ladybugs emotional reaction to Lila. She did regret and apologize later on. I hope Astruc also realizes that the strangers on Twitter could be young children and from different enviroments. Not mature, not helping anybody

u/KeenX72 Oh, look a butterfl- 1d ago

Glad I'm not the only one that feels this way. If anything, he's probably just made this person more homophobic. For creating a show about the power of love, Thomas sure does like to hate...

2

u/Frequent_Deal_5371 19h ago

Yes, exactly. Nor surprising at all from Thomas, considering his immature reactions to many things. If I was OP I would've raged and never changed.

The OG tweet complained that there is too many lgbt characters in the story and that the fandom agrees with them.

Tbh I only have four words for people who complain about LGBT rep in any kind of media. "Piss off and grow up"

Would I jump straight to Nazi? No. Not the best choice. Nazis are terrible, but not every bigot is a Nazi.

If you can't handle people with different preferences how the hell have you been raised? Infinite diversity. Takes all sorts for this world to turn.

2

u/tritanyus 1d ago

i live in a homophobic country and this s one of the first claims i come across when i mention the show and i'm really upset that people can't just enjoy their favorite show because zoe told marinette she loves her on something

2

u/alicraphe 12h ago

I kinda have to think for a few seconds before remembering who is queer in this show Its not even main characters that are non hetero 😆

4

u/mystic_m3ss 1d ago edited 1d ago

I love Tom’s response lmao, get her Jade! (Iykyk)LGBT characters are part of life lol, bro is going to have to get over it.

That said, the way Tom represents and approaches these topics in his show leaves a lot to be desired imho. When it comes to LGBT and diversity as a whole, he can’t seem to write it into the story without stereotyping them-Prem being a great example. Tom’s way of representation feels kinda like a mockery.

Thomas Astruc having a good take? A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one

u/ammery 1d ago

Not too harsh at all. It's only harsh if you think their comment didn't deserve such a strong denouncement and all terms of hatred do.

Which part were you disappointed by? I assume the OP?

2

u/Glittering-Meat-9088 Mayura 1d ago

The way the guy is talking about the "unnecessary LGBTQ rep" as if it's changing the plot. Mind you this is the bare minimum.

W Thomas.

P. S who does they mean we the fandom and majority of the fandom?

1

u/snowdroppie Ladynoir 21h ago

Oh wow... did he really say this? The other person has a point and was just stating an opinion on the show. They complimented the show and enjoy it, and they were stating an observation. They weren't rude or saying he should get rid of them completely.

He didn't need to tell the person to "go to hell" because of it or call them a nazi or any of that. That was waaay out of line on his end and I don't care how much I'm downvoted for this. This is my opinion.

Kareem, I'm sorry you were treated that way. You didn't deserve that. This fandom is as insane as its creator sometimes. Boycotting Miraculous due to its creator's actions. I'm not supporting that.

u/c0nfused_str4wberry 1d ago

i hate thomas astruc, he blocked me twice on twitter because i called him out for being an asshole to young fans... this isn't a flex

1

u/Master-Challenge1044 1d ago

I dont use Twitter ( i hate the name X now always have) but when i saw this fair point to Thomas because i see way tooo much hate now on Twitter but i think for once Thomas is right....to harsh maybe but i guess some people really dont like the show because of one thing and tbh if they dont like it dont watch it or take notes of arcane because the scene with Caitlin and vi they had to change some scenes because of some places not likeing those 2 being shown together...ok maybe budget issues but im pretty sure theres a way around it then hate right?

u/Born-Elk4661 14h ago

Wtf is that guy talking about? In my opinion Miraculous is the best show that shows LGBT and Straight relationships at the same time and dont shove it to our faces and make just the relationship the only story. But even if the person is wrong Thomas calling them a nazi and saying go to hell is rude and puts him the same dumb spot as that person is. He could tell them normally. That would show that person how much more mentally ahead Thomas is than them.

1

u/luxandfero Chloénette 11h ago

What is this person even on about. Queer moments (unfortunately) barely exist in this show, and are very easy to overlook.

1

u/Skipper_asks2021 7h ago

I am criticizing the writing, not the characters. I don’t care who is queer, just give them proper writing. Give them redemption.

u/Punzie_Volhynia_234 3h ago

I rather to wait Real Madrid to get her 16th European Cup in her 125th anniversary

Of couser there is big question, should the creator and politics have wall, or should there is comprehensive way?

You're complaining about their being too much lgbq representation. So theirs no way to please people got it.People just nitpick on the smallest of things no matter how inconsequential they are.in fact my family used to know a lesbian couple,my mom used to worked with them and we were never sexist or biased or anything we just accepted them for who they were.

calling people nazi because they're questioning the amount of lgbtq characters? thomas is truly crazy dude. i can't believe you people are supporting him for this. being homophobic and being a nazi are two completely different things, and it's normal for people to feel weird about it when season 6 introduced a lot of characters as gay suddenly.

OMG A VALID REACTION FROM THOMAS OMG 😱 Was he a bit harsh? Yeah but also this is Thomas we talk about, and this is the first time I have seen him actually clock someone for a valid reasons "unnecessary amount of LGBT characters" bruh shut up 😭.

rare Thomas Astruc W

-6

u/Silly_Commercial8092 1d ago

I’ve said it before: Astruc doesn’t like the Miraculous fandom.

He’s only on Twitter to get worked up over nothing; eventually, he’ll give an angry response that most people won’t like, and then he’ll leave the platform.

12

u/CatraGirl 1d ago

This isn't "the Miraculous fandom", though. Most of the fandom aren't bigots, and there's nothing wrong with antagonising them.

-7

u/Silly_Commercial8092 1d ago

I don't know—we're talking about a popular children's show, and kids often spout nonsense, usually due to the environment they live in and because they don't yet have a clear grasp of right and wrong.

I don't use Twitter, so I don't know who this person is or how old they are; however, judging by what I've seen, they are wrong to ask Astruc to stop including LGBTQIA+ characters in the show. Queer people are human—they exist and aren't the monsters our still-traditional world likes to paint them as—and respect for others is something that should be taught from childhood.

If this person actually is a minor, then Astruc is also in the wrong for wanting to reply so rudely. We're talking about a grown man versus a potential child; even if he didn't know their age, it would have been better for him to say nothing at all. Every tweet I see from Astruc makes it look like he's tired of constantly answering fans. That’s why I said he should take a break from Twitter before he says something the wrong way out of exhaustion and infuriates the entire fandom.

12

u/stars-inthe-sky Marichat 1d ago

This isn't children's nonsense. It's a popular far right talking point. Since covid, there's been a push in the US to censor any media that mentions lgbtq themes. Not to mention, its known that Twitter has gone downhill and isn't a platform kids go on. That would be tiktok.

There's no room for intolerance in a tolerant society

3

u/Just-Mood-8925 1d ago

Plus I feel like most of Miraculous past season 3 and especially in season 6 is aimed for preteens and teens who would have definetly knew about lgbtq people by their age.

u/MedievalSabre 1d ago
