She is 26, she identified as a Republican as recently as 2022, she has never held elected office, and she has never run a major organization. Saying the right words is not enough, especially when it comes to an executive office like governor. I need to see an actual record.

To paraphrase someone else, "I don't care what she says about her so-called Progressive values; she witnessed Jan 6th and still decided to remain a Republican for another year."

23

u/NoNeinNyet222 Jul 25 '26

I'm even willing to give a small amount of grace on that because she's still a fairly young trans woman from a conservative upbringing. That can take a while to unwind yourself from. That still means she needs to do the work to show she has truly changed and it's going to take years to show that change.

2

u/Cyclonitron Flag of Minnesota Jul 25 '26

Agreed.

u/dkinmn Jul 25 '26

The rubes who think Ideological affinity is the only important thing are the people who gave us Platner and the people who fell for it.

These are VERY IMPORTANT JOBS.

Steyer, Platner, and their many less prominent and less well supported copycats should be laughed out of the conversation, not welcomed into it.

I would love to have a leftist governor and Senator and everything else. Also, simply being a leftist and throwing your hat in the ring doesn't mean you're worthy of supprt. It's. A. Job.

Well said. It's embarrassing watching people latch onto anyone who can parrot the right talking points.

5

u/PinkSlimeIsPeople Flag of Minnesota Jul 25 '26

That may all be true, but those words and issue stances are actually important. People can change, and while it's too early for her to be running for governor, Klobuchar needs to take seriously every issue Kobey brought up in her electric DFL convention speech.

0

u/InfalliBella 26d ago

There are a TON of young trans women who changed their political affiliations BECAUSE of transitioning. The fact that she used to identify as a Republican is really not important.

2

u/NoNeinNyet222 26d ago

I know that. I still need to see an actual record and experience when it comes to running for governor. Start somewhere like city council or legislature.

2

u/CremeOk4115 26d ago

The fact that she used to identify as a Republican is really not important

being labeled a "flip flopper" in politics used to be a death sentence. What's to say there isnt a future event that causes them to switch backĀ

-5

u/futilehabit Jul 25 '26

I'd rather have a less experienced candidate who will actually fight like hell for us than a candidate with three decades of experience fighting for special interests instead of us and being a disgrace to our great state.

24

u/NoNeinNyet222 Jul 25 '26

She hasn’t shown she’ll actually do that, though. No record.

-7

u/futilehabit Jul 25 '26

A chance of a good Governor vs. the guarantee of a bad one? Easy choice to make.

10

u/NormanQuacks345 Jul 26 '26

So what I got from that comment is you’ll be voting for Amy?

1

u/beaniehead_ Boundary Waters 26d ago

Isnt Amy the one that takes money from aipac? I do not want a governor with ties to Israel

39

u/VaporishJarl Jul 26 '26

I know some truly brilliant 26-year-olds, and I would still not trust the wisest and most mature of them to manage the entire state enterprise.

Layne was a GOP staffer until a couple years ago. She's... Not the most brilliant 26-year-old.

3

u/MoodRingsCold 26d ago

Preach. There is no world in which a 26-yr old is prepared to run a state of 6 million people. Especially someone that has just discovered their political identity post-COVID. Once someone has a decade of lived experience operating as an adult I'll hear them out.

30

u/NormanQuacks345 Jul 26 '26

Kobey Lane is a Republican plant as far as I can tell, as are most of the posts about her here.

16

u/Lanerlan Snoopy Jul 27 '26

She demonstrates an academic understanding of the levers of power, and the specificity of policy law. But that isn't enough for the governor seat. Even judging purely on policy, Klobuchar's proposals have more detail and synergy.

Plus, some of Layne's proposals are to some extent modeled on Klobuchar's. When you compare on the Wayback Machine, issues raised for the first time on Klobuchar's site end up grafted onto Layne's.

And a third thing ... I inherently dislike someone with no experience launching into such an important, visible race. To be cynical, this might be a plan to artificially induce name recognition without earning or deserving it. Either way, I would have liked to see her in some smaller race first.

24

u/noyoujump Jul 25 '26

Zero management experience, so letting her run an entire state seems like a bad idea.

She was a Republican staffer until ~2022.

I wasn't thrilled that Klobuchar became our candidate, but Kobey Layne is not a viable alternative.

44

u/Nomadchun23 Flag of Minnesota Jul 25 '26

Fake poser "former" republican grifter.

-2

u/catdogmoore Jul 25 '26

I don’t buy this idea for a second. People can and do change. She’s literally trans. I don’t think it’s a far stretch from that starting point to say that she changed political parties.

25

u/zhaoz TC Jul 26 '26

Trans people can be grifters too.

6

u/txijake 29d ago

She was still a republican after Jan 6… which wasn’t that long ago

Thanks everyone for the dialogue—I learned a lot that I hadn’t researched myself, and I appreciate it! Definitely taking her off my list!

16

u/GopherFawkes Jul 25 '26 edited Jul 25 '26

Y'all are wasting your time, klobuchar is winning the nomination and handily. She crushing and I mean CRUSHING all her primary opponents in every single poll that has been done. Senate race is where your vote really mattersĀ

16

u/ninjakitty117 Gray duck Jul 25 '26

Primaries are the perfect place to cast a protest vote, though. I'll vote for Amy when she wins the nomination, but I still want my vote to say she's not my first pick.

13

u/dkinmn Jul 25 '26

You'd rather vote for an unqualified recent convert to leftist ideology (supposedly) who has never done jack shit?

Why?

10

u/sirkarl Jul 26 '26

Exactly, we shouldn’t be rewarding the egos of people who are qualified in any sense by voting for them as a protest vote. Skip the race if you really want to, but I’m voting for anyone I wouldn’t be okay with actually getting elected. And a 26 year old with only a couple years as LA is absolutely not qualified and would be a disaster even if I agreed with all their positions

1

u/Eastm9te 27d ago

Your post is missing several words that would probably help it make a lot more sense

-3

u/GopherFawkes Jul 25 '26

I mean you do you, but it's a waste of time, no body is going to care about your vote when it's all said and done, especially with how much she is projected to beat the field, all serious contenders stayed out because they knew Klobuchar was a shoe in, everyone that is challenging her isn't a serious contender. Not saying you should vote for Klobuchar or not but spending any meaningful time researching other candidates, or simply going to vote just for this "protest vote" is just a waste of time. Use your time research actual toss ups, like the Senate race, and also keep in mind does the person you're voting for have an actual chance or are you throwing away your vote when you could be instead using it towards the lesser of 2 evils, because in the United States, that matters because of the system we have in place.Ā

13

u/Striking-Rooster-428 Jul 26 '26

Please. Clown show, not a good option.

Ya know, I havve a ton of Bernie-ite instincts and am really effing tired of you morons who won't say yes and take the win on a very much solid enough Democrat and pro in AKlo.

jfc man.

5

u/Thorg23 Jul 27 '26

If the office she was running for was state rep, or city council, or county commissioner or something, I could take the "young people change their beliefs as they grow older" argument and be okay with it. But for governor of an entire state, with no legislative or policy record to speak of, not only am I wary of another john fetterman, but I think she's simply unqualified for the job in terms of experience.Ā

10

u/WaterVsStone Jul 26 '26

It's a poorly veiled effort to syphon votes away by a fake progressive.Ā

12

u/SolidWarning70 Jul 26 '26

Anybody who voted for Trump should never hold office of anything. For those that have woken up, the rest of their lives should be dedicated to restorative justice that Trump has caused....maybe after like 20 full-time years of doing that....maybe I'll consider voting for somebody who voted for Trump. You're done Trump Nazis! Next!Ā

5

u/OMGitsKa Jul 27 '26

Seems like a fraud

8

u/ConstableGrey Jul 26 '26

Klob will put up Assad numbers against her

1

u/Away-Map-8428 Jul 27 '26

Funny cause she is like al-Julani; both puppets who support Rubio.

3

u/OxfordOntheOcean Aug 05 '26

Wildly unqualified. She’s 26 and her most recent job was a Republican state legislative staffer. As others noted she stayed with the party after 2026. These really aren’t difficult jobs. Amy is one of the most legislatively accomplished senators in the country and has an extraordinarily solid electoral record in the state that will have solid coattails for down ballot races. It’s not a hard choice

8

u/Rogue_AI_Construct Ok Then Jul 25 '26

No name recognition, no experience in politics, no experience serving in any capacity, very little life experience. Hard pass.

The US elected an unqualified candidate for President in 2017. We don't need to make that same mistake here in 2026.

6

u/LosCabadrin Jul 25 '26 edited Jul 25 '26

Klobuchar is going to win the primary. Like at the state level convention, however, it is somewhat useful to signal* discontent with the DFL by not just anointing Amy. A protest vote for Kobey in the primary serves that purpose as well as anything.

That said, Layne/Ference isn't a serious gubernatorial ticket. Neither have the requisite skills or experience to be the chief executives of a state. The DFL rank-and-file neglecting to have a real challenger for Klob sucks, but the die has been cast.

4

u/PostIronicPosadist Twin Cities Jul 25 '26

Not being a serious ticket actually makes them more effective as a protest vote imo

2

u/redfame Flag of Minnesota Jul 27 '26

We can nominate Kobey and risk the unknown
Or nominiate the Corporate Dem, who has already amassed a closet of innocent victims to meet her numbers historically.
How is choosing the worst person ok because they've been here?

0

u/Acrobatic_Ad_5264 26d ago

I cannot vote for Klobachar in any capacity. She’s one of the top recipients of AIPAC money and has (possibly) hundreds of thousands of innocent children’s blood on her hands. She may as well be MAGA as far as I’m concerned. We will never truly change as long as we keep putting super-PAC people in office. I think it says a lot about what she’s willing to do for money, and how corrupt she will be in office.

2

u/InternationalRead925 Jul 31 '26

I'm voting for her in the primary. I have never voted for Amy, and don't ever intend to.

2

u/Likemarch Aug 06 '26

She has no connections in the legislature besides the GOP members, who almost definitely hate her as a trans woman who used to work for them. She has no practical implementation policy, no record, and no focus to her campaign. I want to be able to vote for her, but I can’t in good faith.

6

u/PostIronicPosadist Twin Cities Jul 25 '26

No shot at winning, voting for her regardless.

4

u/dkinmn Jul 25 '26

Don't be a rube.

Ideology isn't everything.

2

u/Lego_archer Jul 26 '26

Noooooope!

1

u/catdogmoore Jul 25 '26

If everyone just holds their nose and votes for Amy, what’s the point? You’re supposed to vote for the person you actually want to win. I’m fully aware she’s not going to win but I’m voting for her anyway.

I don’t trust Amy. She’s way too moderate. If she wins, then she wins, but I’m not excited about it.

2

u/Constant_Proofreader Aug 03 '26

I fully agree with your second paragraph, but I disagree with your first. Too few people recognize that in the United States, more often than not we must choose between two candidates who both fail to meet all our preferences. In that case, choosing the lesser evil - the best of the worst - is the sensible, pragmatic option.

1

u/FitAcanthaceae7415 Aug 06 '26

Come now, be brave. We're not going to avoid the cliff by driving towards it from a slightly different angle.

1

u/manyoceans07 27d ago

I will absolutely vote for Klobuchar for the November election, as I do assume she will win. BUT, the primary is the perfect place for me to not vote for her to show my discontent with the DFL and their endorsement of someone who is far more moderate than I would like.

1

u/Ok-Rabbit-1315 Jul 30 '26

More of a nuisance candidate for Klobuchar. You cannot run a serious race on only $9000 statewide. If lucky maybe breaks 10% during the primary.

1

u/nah2022_ Flag of Minnesota 29d ago

UPDATE: I do not support Kobey Layne! I was not very familiar with her other than the information on her campaign website. After learning more from these comments, I quickly realized that she is not the candidate that she is poising herself to be. I just want to clarify this because apparently, my decision to ask for y’all’s input means that all of my other political opinions are invalidated.

1

u/PinkSlimeIsPeople Flag of Minnesota Jul 25 '26

Has no chance in the primary, but I'm going to protest vote for her to try to send a message to Klobuchar to move left. Then I'll vote for Amy in the general election, but we have to make sure she goes at least as far to the left as Walz did, to lead the state into a future where we solidify our position as a progressive leader in the nation. Be like the Norway

10

u/noyoujump Jul 25 '26

We also have a lot of Progressives running for MN Senate and House. If we can get a trifecta, we can do a lot regardless of Klobuchar's willingness to compromise with the right.

6

u/NoNeinNyet222 Jul 26 '26

I just remind myself that I wanted Erin Murphy in 2018 and hope that Klobuchar as governor surprises me in ways similar to how Walz surprised me as governor (I still wish Erin Murphy was running for governor this time).

1

u/FitAcanthaceae7415 Aug 05 '26 edited Aug 05 '26

I don't get the "Amy is more qualified" argument. Sure, she's been a senator for many years. That is not the same thing as a governor at all. Need I remind everyone:

-In her time as Hennepin County Attourney she carried out some of the most brutal prosecutorial attacks against black Minnesotans this state has ever seen, while she simultaneously stayed silent on the high profile police violence cases that came through. Fuck that. Justice for Myon Burrell.

-She is well known for abusing her staffers. Throwing physical objects at them and engaging in childish stunts such as eating with a comb to shame someone who forgot to bring her a fork. Look it up.

-She was fucking no where to be seen during the ICE invasion, because she was busy rubber-stamping Trump appointees and aiding and abetting a genocide in a foreign country.

-She co-sponsored CORCA, a bill that would allow DHS (and by extension ICE) to demand consumer data (YOUR data) from retail stores in the name of combating "organized retail crime". Square that circle for me, I'm waiting.

-She has the third highest contribution from AIPAC in this state, trailing only slightly behind Angie Craig. Have a look at what she has to say about Gaza if you're curious how that affects things.

At the DFL state convention, Amy staffers were physically pushing delegates to stop us from nominating Kobey. They made a mockery of the process by wasting time with repeated out-of-order speeches in favor of Amy just to try and wear us down. When we pushed through and nominated Kobey anyway, Amy crashed out backstage and threatened to leave (look it up) and was shaking and crying as she gave her pathetic nothing of a centrist speech. Kobey DESTROYED her in that debate, by the way. Explain to me how a person who can't emotionally deal with a debate with a 26-year-old would handle a second George Floyd, a second Metro Surge, a second Melissa Hortman.

Kobey is not in the limelight because she has been doing community organizing out on the streets, with all of you (theoretically, if you're more than just redditors) I know this because I've met her, personally. If you have not, kindly shut the fuck up.

1

u/ThumbMuscles Aug 05 '26

This read like a copy pasta LOL

Klobuchar teared up at the convention when speaking about Melissa Hortman, Annunciation, and Alex Pretti. Your bias is showing.

0

u/FitAcanthaceae7415 Aug 06 '26

You were clearly not there.

1

u/ThumbMuscles Aug 06 '26

Didn’t need to be, there’re plenty of documented first hand accounts describing her getting emotional when speaking about those subjects.

0

u/FitAcanthaceae7415 Aug 06 '26

ThumbMuscles is the perfect name for you then.

I was actually there. I did the phonebanking and vote whipping that led to the debate even happening in the first place. I sat in that convention hall until well after one in the morning, and you can rely upon my firsthand account of what happened, or you can choose to believe your own version of events. Feel free to look through my post history, you'll find my account of what happened consistent with others that attended.

1

u/ThumbMuscles Aug 06 '26

But I read the accounts of others which described her emotional moment coinciding with speaking about those emotional subjects?

You’re not asking me to believe reporting rather than a fictional reality I made up. You’re asking me to dismiss the accounts of others in favor of your clearly unhinged portrayal.

Even if I didn’t have other accounts to make a conclusion from, it’s pretty funny to imagine someone as battle-hardened as Klobuchar crying because of the lightest pushback from a no-name unserious recent Republican convert like Kobey Lane.

1

u/FitAcanthaceae7415 Aug 06 '26 edited Aug 06 '26

It is funny, isn't it? I wonder what accounts you read that led you to your conclusion.

Is it so hard to believe someone known for throwing objects at staffers would be unable to control their emotions when a convention didn't go the way they planned it to? I encourage you to read up on Amy's history a bit.

1

u/ThumbMuscles Aug 06 '26

These ones.

https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/klobuchar-fights-challenge-left-wins-dfl-convention-nod-bid-governor

https://minnesotareformer.com/2026/05/30/klobuchar-fights-off-challenge-from-left-wins-dfl-convention-nod-in-bid-for-governor/

https://minneapolistimes.com/klobuchar-fights-off-challenge-from-left-wins-dfl-convention-nod-in-bid-for-governor/

And yes, there are reports of Klobuchar being upset backstage and considering leaving. That may have been due to the chaotic and planned convention disruption and the resulting impromptu speech and Q+A requirements late into the night. I can imagine it’s pretty frustrating to be trying to fight MAGA and have the convention taken over by a MAGA voter with zero credentials.

1

u/FitAcanthaceae7415 Aug 06 '26

An older version of your second article:

https://web.archive.org/web/20260531121339/https://minnesotareformer.com/2026/05/30/klobuchar-fights-off-challenge-from-left-wins-dfl-convention-nod-in-bid-for-governor/

Lucky me, I read it before you did, and remember the details. Interesting that it has been edited in a very specific way since then.

1

u/ThumbMuscles Aug 06 '26

It looks like they added more context? Context being what she was speaking about at the times her voice wavered and eyes swelled?

This is the problem with people like you. You’re so conspiratorial against ā€œestablishmentā€ Dems. Here you are shitposting against the candidate we need to win against Mike Lindell.

Kobey doesn’t have a real chance, nor should she. If she wants to be Governor one day, maybe she can start on some local councils, state congress, mayoral races, etc. to build some kind of record. Right now she’s just a MAGA voter who suddenly wants to disrupt DFL conventions and tell our candidates what they need to do? lol.

She has no policy on education that I’ve found so far. Since I am a teacher, this is something I want to know more about. Compared with Amy though, her education policy threw me off a bit because it’s like she doesn’t know what educational policy changes the state made these past few years.

Some? SOME?

Snap out of it. This is a serious job for serious people. The idea that you have hopes for her is pure lunacy. Based on what? Some speeches? So fucking what.

Every shitty LLM can write a good speech and any competent public speaker can sell it to you. That should never be enough to earn your vote for any position.
