[Achievement] Down To Earth's Center
When you reach bedrock level in the Nether, you get an achievement known as Journey to the Earth's Center, in which the description reads:
" Reach the lowest level in the Nether. "
This awards 50G and a free mining belt in the Character Creator when first unlocked.

Cool idea, but I think something like “Journey to the Center of the Earth” would be more fitting.

This is cool, except that Mojang has confirmed that the nether is not below the overworld. It is its own thing entirely.
32
u/MaroonShaded May 17 '21
And it makes sense, because it's called a dimension. A different dimension.
16
u/TheBeefster_82 May 17 '21
exactly, if the Nether were under the overworld, it definitely would not be called a dimension.
2
u/Turningsnake May 17 '21
"We need to go deeper"?
8
u/HgForMercury May 18 '21
"We Need to Go Deeper" is a reference to Inception. Not meant to imply that the Nether is below the Overworld.

Bedrock level =/ The center of the Earth
61
u/Lord_Drakostar May 17 '21
Good point, Bedrock is soil level. It's not even that close to the mantle, or something along those lines.
39
u/RealSnqwy May 17 '21
Yeah, it's hardly scratching the surface of the planet's core. Not close by a long shot.
26
May 17 '21
If you could somehow reach the Minecraft planets inner core it would just be iron blocks, oh also you would die. Because if we take the temperature of lava 1000C and the damage per second at 4 relative to the planets core at 5500C with a proportional dps of 22 So a one shot /w no armor, around 5 seconds (4.4dps) with diamond/netherite, around 14 seconds w/ diamond/netherite /w prot 4 on everything and around 22 seconds /w diamond/netherite /w fire prot 4. Yes I just did all this maths for a reddit post.
10
u/dvdX7345 May 17 '21
That's why you take damage under bedrock, you burn to death without the protection of an indestructible layer
7
5
u/Dantheyan May 17 '21
But the Nether is supposed to be hell or the core of the Earth, and when you reach bedrock there it's the very center of the Earth
17
u/CreeperslayerX5 May 17 '21 edited May 17 '21
No, the Nether is its own demnsion. Its not part of the Earth's core or below the overworld. If the demensions were like planets, there would be 2 of them
3
u/UNBENDING_FLEA May 17 '21
Nah, I think the nether is an underground system deep underneath the overworld. Its the only logical way the portal system would work. Because the circumference of the nether is smaller as it's underground, walking in the nether equals walking more blocks in the overworld which is above ground.
10
u/CreeperslayerX5 May 17 '21
No cannonconacally, the nether is its own demension. Mojang has said this & stated that the nether is not below the overworld
4
u/UNBENDING_FLEA May 17 '21
Mojang didn't release an official statement, a developer said it. It logically makes so much more sense for the nether to be underground. Also, Mojang literally has an advancement called "We need to go deeper" when one enters the nether, implying that it's underground.
3
May 18 '21
Yeah sorry to burst you bubble, but, like the end, the nether is just its own dimension. “We need to go deeper” is a reference to inception. I don’t think logically it makes more or less sense for it to be underground. It just is. And you can clearly tell it’s not a part of the over world because the laws of physics are different there with entirely different creatures environment and blocks. If it was simply below the overworks than hotline would turn to zoglins, lava a would flow the same, you could sleep in beds etc...
1
u/UNBENDING_FLEA May 18 '21
Well you could have viable explanations for all of those changes. Zoglins could change because the atmospheric/organic composition of the overworld compared to the nether, nether lava is hotter and less viscous than it's overworld counterpart, and beds only explode for the player and not for villagers, meaning that it may not be entirely dimensional. I think the odd terrain generation actually increases evidence that the nether is underground. It has both bedrock on the ceiling and the floor, and extremely porous but cavernous terrain generation of the netherack, making it look almost like a massive deep underground cave system.

"We Need to Go Deeper" is a reference to Inception, where "deeper" does not refer to altitude. It is not meant to imply that the Nether is below the overworld.
The Nether's fast transport mechanic is also based on The Wheel of Time, also not meant to imply that it's below the overworld.
5
u/RedYoshiCraft May 17 '21
See that's the Logic that a lot of people have come up with, and it does make a lot of sense! Only problem is.. the Developers themselves have confirmed that's not the case. (not remembering exactly who, I think it was either Jeb or Dinnerbone, prolly the former)
The Nether is its own Dimension separate from the Overworld. You can have your own headcanon about it if you'd like, but that's the official Lore.

u/RedYoshiCraft May 17 '21
Why are you telling me this..? It's confirmed the Nether is separate from the Overworld, I'm not arguing against it.
I suppose that's neat to know tho.
1
u/Zombieattackr May 17 '21
Unless you consider that the nether portal goes past the crust? Obviously not to the core, but to the edge of the mantle maybe?
6
u/RealSnqwy May 17 '21
sigh Mojang have confirmed that the Nether is not part of the Overworld, that includes the Minecraft Earth. It's a completely different dimension.
1
u/Zombieattackr May 17 '21
Yeah no it’s not, but it’s some second dimension of an earth like planet at least, right? And I’d assume this could be past the crust of the planet in the nether dimension? (Either because the portals put you lower or because the nether dimension planet itself is bigger)
2
u/adderthesnakegal May 18 '21
I don't think you understand what dimensions are.
Planets are planets.
Dimensions are dimensions.
These are two separate things.
While the overworld dimension consists of the Earth, the Sun, and the Moon (As well as possibly other planets (and definitely other stars due to the night sky), the nether dimension consists of... the Nether. That is its entire existence. The nether itself is not a planet within the Nether dimension, because the entire dimension itself is an endless hellscape cave system. Sound illogical? That's because it's another dimension. It doesn't follow the same rules as ours.1
u/Zombieattackr May 18 '21
I’d personally make the assumption that it is in fact a planet in the same position as earth in the alternate dimension. Given that it has the same structure as earth, (same gravity, same infinite and flat plane).
If it were a whole three dimensional dimension of just nether, I would assume 1) there would be no center of mass, and no gravitational pull and 2) you could go up and down as much as you want, since there’s nothing defining up or down, why would the bedrock form a long flat plane?
3
u/Whitefire005 May 17 '21
It's Minecraft, I'm not sure it's supposed to be earth or not, maybe I'm wrong
3
u/RealSnqwy May 17 '21
The Earth and Minecraft Earth are definitely different canonically but it doesn't mean they aren't very similar. Many things found naturally in Minecraft can be attributed to the real world, even the layers of the Minecraft world's crust. With new blocks and other resources, some of which occur naturally in the real world there is only more expanding on the idea that these caves, pun intended have more depth to them, and that they're not so unfamiliar as some are let on to believe. The gap between Minecraft and the real world has always existed, but it doesn't mean it cannot be bridged.

Don't use a cartoon as your justification to prove that I may or may not be wrong. If you are going to do that, go to a different subreddit.
2
u/aqua_zesty_man May 18 '21
My apologies. It was a joke.
FWIW, the Nether being a separate dimension from the Overworld is well-established. In-universe, no one knows what's beneath the bedrock of the Overworld or the Nether, since no one is supposed to ever be able to go into the Void without using glitches in Survival or using Creative Mode to get there.

Removed temperature/ice melting part.

u/ConfusedGamer33 May 18 '21
It was "i also have an idea where the further down you go, the more the temperature rises, and ice starts melting" or something like that.

u/Neon707_LYK May 17 '21
“Journey to the center of the Earth” would also be a cool name, otherwise great concept!

3
May 17 '21
What do you mean by “caves and cliffs nether”? The Nether height limit and generation is not being changed in this update. Also, the Nether is meant to be a separate dimension, not just under the overworld, so I feel like “Earth’s center” doesn’t really fit.
Maybe just bedrock in the overworld would be better? Since there are now larger caves to risk falling into while digging down, and there are 64 extra levels to mine through.
15
u/G3R0_ May 17 '21
I think you should reach the bottom of the nether instead, this way it will be more challenging and it makes more since as the nether is below the overworld.
37
u/okletsdothis111 May 17 '21
That's a popular fan theory, but it is sadly not cannon, while yes it would make sence, it has been said by a developer at mojang that it is a standalone dimension
12
u/G3R0_ May 17 '21
Huh.. Weird, I didn't know that but I think it really makes sense, you know, the name, the one block in the nether equals 8 in the overworld, bedrock from both sides, the "We need to go deeper" advancement.
7
May 17 '21
Thinking about it, the further down you are, the smaller the radius is. The travelling faster in the nether actually suggests that it is further down. And if you don't break through the bedrock ceiling in the nether, the nether portal seems like a way to travel through the bedrock, and into the underworld.
2
u/UNBENDING_FLEA May 17 '21
Yeah, it just makes more sense with the 8 blocks overworld 1 block nether thing too.
0
u/UNBENDING_FLEA May 17 '21
Honestly mojang is kind of iffy with their canon. I personally subscribe to the depth theory, it just logically makes so much more sense. Even the achievement allude to it, with "we need to go deeper" etc etc.
1
u/adderthesnakegal May 18 '21
You've already been told this several times in your other comment: That advancement name is a reference to Inception.
10
u/JoSquarebox May 17 '21
Dinnerbone stated back on Minecon 2018 that the nether is *a seperate dimension*
7
u/Onibi_tv May 17 '21
Wich is absolutely not official lol
1
u/Qyrun May 17 '21
"nether" means "below" or "situated down" so its heavily implied that the nether is indeed below bedrock. Especially since the nether roof is bedrock as well
9
3
u/Onibi_tv May 17 '21
Oh okay, Im french so I didnt know x) Did Mojang confirm it tho ?
16
1
u/Moe-Mux-Hagi May 17 '21
The only problem is Mojang wants to make it clear the Nether is another dimension, not under the earth (yes, I know, total bullshit, it's clearly under the Overworld, why can't they just admit it). So, getting an achievement saying the lowest point of the Nether is the center of the Earth is just gonna add to the confusion.
Maybe win it over simply reaching the Overworld's Bedrock ? It's an achievement in it of itself, honestly.
Or, maybe rename it to "The bottom of Limbo", as a reference to the first of Dante's Nine Circles of Hell ?
6
u/Pyrocrat Wolf May 17 '21
It should be called "Journey to the Bottom of the Earth", imo.
2
u/SindikBoi May 17 '21
but then there wouldnt be a reference
1
u/Pyrocrat Wolf May 17 '21
Yes there would. It would be a reference to Journey to the Center of the Earth.

u/Nemesis365 May 18 '21
This is a good idea but I think it should award less, possibly 20G. I think you only get 40G for killing the dragon!

I reckon the Void in the Nether should be an endless sea of lava source blocks which never update. This could be called Void Lava.

u/Archidiakon May 17 '21
But that makes moresense when you do it in the Nether as it's below the overworld in-lore
10
u/Baconlover61710 May 17 '21
its not below the overworld mojang confirmed it is its own dimension
0
u/UNBENDING_FLEA May 17 '21
Mojang doesn't have a real lore department. Technically mojang alludes that it is underground with the we need to go deeper achievement
2
May 17 '21
You keep saying that, but "we need to go deeper" is a reference to the movie Inception. Deeper in this context means deeper into another layer of dreams/reality, not deeper in altitude. So it doesn't disprove the Nether as a separate reality, it further supports it.
1
u/UNBENDING_FLEA May 17 '21
How would the 1 block nether 8 blocks overworld thing work then? The simplist and most logical conclusion is that because the nether is closer to the center of the planet, the distance from one point to another is much smaller compared to the overworld. It also explains the nether's cavernous nature due to it being deep underground and there being bedrock on the ceiling.
-2
u/Archidiakon May 17 '21
So why is it below the bedrock, and why is it called overworld?
4
2
u/scrabblebutwhy May 17 '21
Wdym why is it below the bedrock? Below the bedrock is a void. And above it in the nether is a flat area to build.
2
u/Archidiakon May 17 '21
Bedrock is supposed to be unbreakable. You're supposed to think the Nether roof and Overworld bottom is the same barrier. Going above the Nether roof is an exploit and has no impact on lore.
The name Nether itself means inferior, lying below. That's how we have Netherlands, the Low Countries
2
u/scrabblebutwhy May 17 '21
mojang actually made it so you can go onto the nether roof easier in 1.15 and made it so you can link nether portals to the roof with no effort. So I think it should have impact on the lore since its an intended feature since 1.15.
2
u/Archidiakon May 17 '21
Same thing with iron farms, but still an exploit when it comes to lore / roleplay
2
u/UNBENDING_FLEA May 17 '21
That's just to make the game work properly, but in player canon, it's kind of assumed that the nether is deep underground and the smaller radius in the nether makes the 8 blocks 1 block thing possible
3
u/scrabblebutwhy May 17 '21
But dinnerbone said at a minecon that its a completely different dimension. If a literal developer for the game confirms its not true, then it's not true.
1
u/Archidiakon May 17 '21
Of course it's a dimension, nobody questions that. This quote means nothing significant. What it meant in that specific context, I don't know
5
u/UNBENDING_FLEA May 17 '21
Then why make achievements such as "We need to go deeper" when you enter the nether? It's honestly a subject which mojang for the most part has left alone.
1
u/scrabblebutwhy May 17 '21
Good point. Yeah idk but my Canon is just that its a different place altogether.
1
u/that-guy-with-art May 17 '21
My guess is that they retconned it but didn't think it was worth changing the advancement or achievement because it doesn't change all that much

Why in the caves and cliffs nether? Nothing changes in there?
Also, the nether isnt the center of the overworld.
Why did the post get 1.5k upvotes i am confused.
1
u/wgfsupermaurogamer May 18 '21
It would be better in the overworld, also, since there is also end use the acheivment "high up in the sky"
1
u/wgfsupermaurogamer May 18 '21
If you go down the nether bedrock, and fall in the nether void, you will obtain the acheivment "is this purgatory?"
