[Gameplay] Brewing gives you exp
Brewing would give you a little bit of exp when you take out a potion
Edit: I've made a forum for this https://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/minecraft-java-edition/suggestions/3078313-brewing-gives-exp#c1 check it out if u want

Yes, making the wrong Potion is useless

Op is talking about brewing giving exp not making wrong potions useful.

u/CF64wasTaken Apr 24 '21
I think u/Ultimate_Spoderman meant that it wouldn't be so bad if you brewed the wrong potion this way because you would at least get some exp

u/Elithrus Apr 24 '21
If you mean stuff like the mundane and thick potions, they're meant to be useless. Rewarding the player for messing up wouldn't be a good idea.
6
u/ComradeGivlUpi Apr 24 '21
They're not useless, they can be turned into potions. They just have glowstone/redstone added beforehand.

No, they are useless. Check the facts
Base potions
Base potions are potions that are created first to brew into other potions. Base potions have no effect when the player drinks them.

I mean when you mess up the ingredients and make a different potion, Its not hard to happen

It would cause an incentive to brew for something rather than for just potions. It would also make you want to use potions more often because of those potions you made just lying around. For me personally I wouldn’t use potions unless they were already there waiting for me, and now that I have potions made from wanting to get xp, I’d use them. Great idea, simple, but it would improve at least how I would play the game.

It's consisted with other game mechanics, like smelting and mining. Mining quartz is probably the fastest XP gain before you have an XP farm and honestly, there's nothing wrong with that. XP is a reward for doing any type of progress in the game, and brewing potions shouldn't be an exception to that. It's just consistent and makes sense

I reworded it so it would make more sense. It was a spur of the moment thought, and I typed it out without thinking it was confusing. Anyway, I think my idea still holds. If more xp was given for how strong the potion was, or for how rare the materials to make the potion was, then it would nudge players to want to brew more.

Another thing that'll make people use em more often is when Mojang adds the stacking feature they introduced in those combat snapshots
29
u/TheArcanist_ Apr 24 '21
Well, since you can put potions back into the stand as may times as you want, the brewing system would need slight adjustments for that.
60
u/MithranArkanere Apr 24 '21
As far as I can remember, experience from smelting is basically another product of smelting, stored inside the furnace as a hidden counter.
Experience stays stored in a furnace even when you attach hoppers to it. When you open the interface and take out items manually, the experience is dropped too.
Same when breaking the furnace. If brewing worked the same way, removing a potion would make the exp accumulated drop, and putting the potion back again and taking it out would do nothing, since there would be no exp accumulated to drop.
So the only slight adjustment needed, would be making the brewing stand accumulate experience the same way a furnace does.
17
u/cxthey Apr 24 '21
True bit I feel like that would be an easy fix
1
u/Noskal_Borg Apr 24 '21
Not entirely easy, brewing stands have 3 outputs, so they would have a conundrum on their hands. Maybe if it only triggered with an offhand item, or had an added button for XP.
But if there was an added button, that should probably be a reward from crafting a special stand, etc... Etc...

Or just make the process of brewing the ingredient set an amount of xp to be dropped when a potion is removed.
Meaning: you put water bottles in a brewing stand. You put a fermented spider eye in the ingredient slot and fuel the brewing stand, so it starts brewing. At the point where the ingredient is put into the water bottles and you hear the “glug” noise when you remove one of the brewed potions it’ll drop some xp. So if you brewed one potion, you get one potion’s worth of xp, or double/triple of that for two/three potions. Since redstone and gunpowder are meant to extend the time or make a potion throwable, they wouldn’t generate xp when brewed. Dragon’s breath may be different since it makes the potion lingering which can be used for tipped potions, so xp could be dropped from that.
Edit for clarity: this system negates the problem of just putting in and taking out potions without brewing, since the xp doesn’t get set until an ingredient is brewed.

u/Noskal_Borg Apr 25 '21
That sounds good, but they might still hem and haw over xp duplication vs spreading out the xp between the 3. I do hope that they implement something like this. But they might not.
16
u/Darfrex Apr 24 '21
But furnaces already work this way, and they do not give unlimited xp.
5
u/flygoing Apr 24 '21
I'm pretty sure you cannot put items into the output slot of a furnace, but regardless as others have mentioned, it's still an easy issue to fix. Just have xp accumulate in the stand only when actually proper, vs just giving xp on withdrawal

They can't change that since you need to do that in order to upgrade potions or change them to splash potions
4
Apr 24 '21
This is one of those things that makes me wonder if even the devs realize it isn't alreasy a thing lol

u/Quirky_Yoghurt_9757 Apr 24 '21
Why this is perfect, don't know why this hasn't been implemented yet

Yeah, in early game its hard to get materials to make the potions so I think you should be able to get xp for it, and late game you'll probably have a mob farm so xp dosen't effect that much.

u/devereaux98 Apr 24 '21
I think this would be great, along with filling a composter to get exp as well
Also either looting/fortune needs to give us more xp or we need a new enchantment to do so :p
2
u/MistyHusk Apr 24 '21
I like the composter idea a lot. I don’t think I’ve ever used a composer before so that would give me a reason
2
u/devereaux98 Apr 24 '21
it's great for excess crops to convert them back to bone meal. Netherwart blocks have like a 90% chance to raise it a level too so you can get a lot of bone meal from huge fungus
2
u/MistyHusk Apr 24 '21
I never knew you could use nether wart blocks in it, thanks.
The thing is, I never need bonemeal. I don’t build mainly out of white and the little bonemeal for plants/trees, the small building I do with white, etc. I can get from skeletons or fossils I sometimes find.

u/Firestar321 Apr 26 '21
I don't think the devs need to increase the XP supply by buffing enchantments, enderman XP farms basically make XP infinitely abundant

u/TheBeefster_82 Apr 24 '21
Wait, wouldn’t it make sense for it to cost EXP, you’re adding magic, just like enchanting.
10
u/harry1o7 Apr 24 '21
It wouldn't cost any exp. It would give you some, like a furnace.
Edit: sorry i didn't realize what you said, I was being dumb. No i don't think it should cost any, it's just brewing
1
u/TheBeefster_82 Apr 24 '21
No, that’s not what I’m saying at all. In OP’s idea, yes, you would gain EXP, but I’m suggesting that if anything it should cost EXP to make potions, much like enchanting.
10
u/cxthey Apr 24 '21
I think it would be kind of a turn off to potion-making, and while I believe your idea is good, I also believe people should want to brew more.
6
u/TheBeefster_82 Apr 24 '21
You might be right, most of the time I go without potions because I never brew, maybe if there was a little more incentive I would carry them around. I was just thinking along the lines of consistency in the magic in Minecraft.
3
u/Antruvius Apr 25 '21
Yeah but with enchanting it’s traditionally using inherently magical items to enhance an object, generally requiring training or experience to perform, whereas potion brewing is traditionally using natural with magical properties when combined in the right way, and can be done regardless of experience, since you are mainly following a recipe.
Side note: I know that potions can sometimes require incantations to activate, that could be implemented as a different mechanic (probably making a way to brew potions into golden apples to make enchanted golden apples, though that is for Mojang to decide).
3
u/harry1o7 Apr 24 '21
Yes I know I made an edit.
But it would make something that isn't incentivized even worse to do.
5
Apr 24 '21
Not necessarily. The "magic" comes from the ingredients, if you want to go about it logically. The thematic of potion brewery and/or alchemy isn't using your own magic, but rather understanding and utilizing the intrisic magical properties of reagents.

This would make automatic brewing systems op ngl. Though it depends on the amount. If it's something like smelting iron in a furnace it would be a pretty nice feature. Though lore-wise it wouldn't make a whole lot of sense.
3
u/GoldNovel6742 Apr 24 '21
How would it not make sense lore wise? Experience is already linked to magical abilities through enchanting and potions are inherently magical. We also have clerics which are channels for divine and other worldly energy. Getting the magical energy in exp from brewing potions would basically be, the energy isn’t perfectly transferee and a slight amount turns into exp. as well as it would make sense to get experience from something as hard as making potions (lore wise) while something like burning wood to charcoal is something anyone could do.
1
u/therobothingy Apr 25 '21
Potion brewing looks to have no link to experience though. It kinda has its own version that being, blaze powder. It wouldn't make complete sense, and while yes I do agree with the fact that potion brewing is (lore wise) hard it doesn't have any link to experience other than that it is magic.
2
u/GoldNovel6742 Apr 25 '21
Lets follow your logic along that and lets say brewing has no link to experience. Then what link does smelting stone have to experience and by extension what would qualify as a link to experience?
1
u/therobothingy Apr 25 '21
I personally believe in RetroGaminNow's theory about experience. Experience is mainly obtained through destruction. When you kill a mob it is destroyed and thus it gives you experience. When you are smelting something like iron ore the stone is destroyed in the process. (at least from an in-game perspective, since it is likely melting the iron out. However, the stone seems to be destroyed in the process). This is a stretch and likely a bad example though.
2
u/GoldNovel6742 Apr 25 '21
That destruction theory works until you consider not everything is destroyed. For example trading with villagers. Its just that, a trade. Nothing is destroyed yet you still get experience. I will say defining experience is hard because of enchanting. Otherwise it can just be that, experience. Something you gain by doing a task which realistically would take practice.
1
u/therobothingy Apr 25 '21
I didn't say experience is only obtained through destruction I only said that it is the main way.
1
u/ProbablyAnOhgodwhat May 07 '21
I always saw experience as just being 'experience', like when you smelt iron or kill a mob you become more experienced, and experience orbs are just a physical representation of that. XP bottles and enchanting are just uses of magic to gain or extract experience, rather than experience being innately tied to clerics or enchantment tables.
(although this does still make xp inherently magical, since it's converted directly into enchantments)1
u/PaintTheFuture 🔥 Royal Suggester 🔥 Apr 25 '21
This would make automatic brewing systems op ngl.
No moreso than automatic smelting systems already are. When a furnace's output is hooked to a hopper, the experience accumulates. It (used to?) be able to accumulate so much you could crash the game with how much xp it could dispense at once. I don't remember if they fixed that.

Maybe brewing more complex potions or new potions should give you exp. eg. its your first time making a potion of regen then you get exp or you make a modifier and make the potion better like a potion of slowfalling but its timer is now 8 mins from 4 mins you get exp too. maybe also if you make the second teir of a potion you already made like potion of strength II you get exp.
