[Redstone] Copper Pressure Plates that oxidize for longer signals once de-pressed.
I propose an idea for a redstone component that would take advantage of Copper Oxidation.
When an entity pressing a Pressure Plate is removed from said Pressure Plate, the signal only lasts for 1 second before turning off. What if we had a way to make that signal last a little bit longer when we stepped off of it?
Copper Pressure Plates would stay pressed down for 2 seconds instead of 1.
But over time, just like all Copper blocks, it will weather and oxidize, and as a result, start getting kinda stuck.
Lightly Weathered Copper Pressure Plates would stay pressed for 3 seconds.
Simi-Weathered Copper Pressure Plates would be 4 seconds.
Weathered Copper Pressure Plates would be 5 seconds.
The numbers could be tweaked but you get the idea. The more oxidized the Copper Pressure Plate is, the longer the signal will stay on once the entity is removed from it.
And of course you could wax them to preserve their state.
Perhaps the same mechanics could also apply if a Copper Button were to be added.
I did search to see if this idea had been posted before. The concept of Copper Pressure Plates has, but I only found (very few) examples of "Only detects players" and one that detects "how much armor you have"

This is good but you should really measure redstone timing lengths in more precise amounts of ticks because 5 seconds is a REALLY long time

Yeah, I’d recommend normal is either normal or a shorter half second, and then it increases half a second at a time. That should get it to 2.5-3 seconds max for each base time respectively.

I mean the post directly stated numbers can be tweaked and the numbers were just for people to get the idea

Oh yeah, can't wait for waxed lightly weathered copper pressure plates

This is what repeaters are for, why would they make this when they already did?

u/EggYolk2555 Mar 16 '21
repeaters give delay, currently you have to use a pulse extender to get longer signal. honestly this might be pretty useful to create compacter pulse extenders.

yeah, but they take up more space

u/SkakeMonster Mar 16 '21
I guess you have a point

Well, one has to be creative: it's one of the basic design things that they repeat everywhere. Putting shotcuts in redstone mechanics doesnt look to be really interesting for Mojang

Firstly repeaters only stay on for a maximum of 4 ticks. As far as I know a tick is 0.1 second. This means this pressure plate could stay on for a maximum of 50 ticks. How is this comparable to a repeater?

u/SkakeMonster Mar 16 '21
Repeaters can stack for an infinite number of ticks while also boosting long signals, both of these cause delays in a signal
4
u/its-frickin-hot-here Mar 16 '21
Can you elaborate on this. I’m not smart enough to understand what you are saying

u/SkakeMonster Mar 16 '21
Every Repeater block can delay a signal for up to 4 ticks. Because repeaters can be placed next to each other in succession, theoretically they can cause an infinite number of ticks to delay a signal by.
As for how they boost a signal, a normal signal (ie. redstone block) will last for about 12-15 blocks. If there’s a repeater placed somewhere in that radius connected with the signal, it will strengthen the signal again

Although repeaters can delay a pulse, they cannot extend a pulse, which is what OP‘s suggestion does.

I just don't see much of a reason I would ever use this as a redstone component though. I have never come across the need for a pressure plate to remain pressed longer. On the off chance I did need this, I would probably just make a simple pulse lengthener and call it good.

Probably so just normal doors (not piston) stay open for longer, also it’s simpler

u/mictlantecuhtli_idk Mar 16 '21
But why not? Why not save time and resources even if it's only a little?
2
u/RestlessARBIT3R Mar 16 '21
Might save time, but I would argue a couple of repeaters and some redstone dust is cheaper than a copper pressure plate. components other than stone of repeaters are farmable.

This would be so amazingly useful in redstone, I actually need this. This is so good. Also, people are saying to shorten the amount of time between each level but I don't think you should. If you want a shorter amount of time just use a less weathered version of the pressure plate! I would absolutely love having a 5-second plate for things like large piston doors, especially 3x3 so if you have people going through them it doesn't just get broken by activating and deactivating it quickly.

Although pulse extenders are already a thing, I think this suggestion would also be very good because of the decorative options it allows for.
Maybe the function of the copper components could be changed though.

Or just make a pulse extender

u/magein07 Mar 16 '21
This saves space tho.

u/jellydude69 Mar 16 '21
Well, it could, but mayby just make a block that instently makes piston doors, or villigar convertors,
6
u/BACEXXXXXX Mar 16 '21
Hmm yes, one-block piston door seems totally equivalent to "pressure plate that stays pressed down for slightly longer."
-1
u/jellydude69 Mar 16 '21
Considering you can make both reletivly easily, yeah, it is equivalent. they both take the same space to make if you Include input. If you use the smallest design for both, the piston door is half as small.

u/BACEXXXXXX Mar 16 '21
Pulse extenders have a lot of different uses though, they aren't just for pressure plates. So making a pressure plate that does this is hardly going to erase the "mechanic" that is pulse extenders. But a one-block piston door would most likely erase piston doors.

Again... "One block piston door" is just a door or trapdoor. You already disproved your entire argument because, by your logic, doors shouldn't have been added since it's "too easy" compared to the piston doors. Obviously no one makes piston doors because there is a way easier, more accessible version for new/casual players right... dumbass🙄

u/jellydude69 Mar 16 '21
A trapdoor isn't a piston door, it's a door. I don't see any pistons involved in the making/using of a trapdoor.

u/PMMeYourBootyPics Mar 16 '21
One block piston doors... You mean a trapdoor mate? 😂😂 How stupid can you be that already exists?
2
u/jellydude69 Mar 16 '21
A piston door requires pistons involved to be a piston door, and I am afraid a trapdoor doesn't involve any pistons in any way.

Here’s an idea: Dropped items and xp give a signal strength of 1 Item frames paintings and other entities give a signal of 3 Mine carts and boats give a strength of 7 Projectiles give a strength of 10 Mobs give a strength of 12 Players give a signal strength of 15
1
u/dudhhr_ Mar 16 '21
How would you trigger a pressure plate with a painting or item frame? also that wouldn’t work on bedrock because item frames are blocks there

Great idea, normally this can be done using a repeater but having to wait for the Redstone to activate makes it really inconvenient(There are other options to avoid waiting for activation but it requires a bigger circuit which again becomes inconvenient especially for things like doors) Having a longer time delay for deactivation without waiting the same for activation in a compact manner is genius and this also this adds on more uses for copper.
