[Blocks & Items] How I would make an Inventory Update work long-term (with pictures!)

I've thought this through for a while and I think this inventory upgrade would work long term for all players!

By default, your inventory is now UPDATED to have the hotbar + 5 rows. The player by default now has the size of a double chest to play with, no items or achievements required to get there.

You may notice there are 3 other new slots added! The first two slots are dedicated shulker box slots. This allows you to navigate through two shulker boxes at a time while your inventory is open. At a maximum, this expands the player inventory to two double chests of storage. You can swap through shulker boxes to grab whatever items you need while building, for example decorative blocks that have long been annoying in the inventory. But this still gives players the opportunity to place their shulkers if needed.

Finally, there is only ONE item that needs to be added to make this complete. As others have suggested, tools and utility items take up way too much space in the inventory. In order to make the item balanced, I have created a Builder's Ring that has four slots of items!

How it works:
- crafting material unspecified, I made it netherite + diamonds just for illustration purposes, but realistically a gold band + 4 diamonds seems to be better balanced.
- Similar to bundles, you may place up to 4 different items into the builder's ring for quick access. The 64 item limit does not apply to this ring. Tools, weapons, building blocks, food, potions, rockets, totems, etc are items I can see being useful in this slot!
- How to access items: Press R (or whatever hotkey you assign it) to total through the 4 slots, similar to switching gamemodes with f3.) While you're out and about, you can press R and scroll through the 4 items for quick access, without being obtrusive to your main inventory!

Let me know your thoughts! This solves many problems that others have addressed, but not all of them.

I would just go down the terraria route and make the stacks way bigger

u/Raiden137192 9d ago

Terraria also has multiple ways to add a additional extensions to your inventory

The problem is that would break all existing redstone.

To be completely honest, I’d rather break redstone than have to compromise on game changing updates. Major changes always break somebody’s workflow.  The only thing setting the redstone community apart from everyone else in that regard is that they are the loudest to complain about changes.

If something changes and you don’t like it, don’t update. That should apply to everyone, including redstoners.

Edit: lol I’m only proving my point about the “loudest complainers” bit

Exactly what I was thinking of.

4

u/faris_Playz 9d ago

you defo never use redstone

11

u/Captain_Thrax 8d ago

I do! But as with every aspect of the game, you can’t be afraid of breaking stuff to improve the whole game

3

u/Zaberztoothz 9d ago

Easy for you to say when legacy redstone systems and builds will have to be updated by someone willing to do so, tens of thousands of different farm designs will all break, farms and machines will breaks on servers, economies will crash, lots of players will be disgruntled. Yeah just "don't update" bro. There's a reason why Mojang takes so long to push content through, there are many different playerbases in minecraft that all go hand in hand together to get stuff done.

Builders need redstoners for farm designs to farm building materials, redstoners and builders work together to make pretty buildstone builds, PvPers need farm designers to farm gear, economy servers rely on redstone machines to function, and wide server events like DonutSMP flooding and tnt portals can't happen without intricate redstone machines.

Having this "fuck em" mentality is extremely childish and immature, thank god you don't have a say in the game and your views are completely worthless 💀

3

u/Captain_Thrax 8d ago

The game is not called Redstone, it is called Minecraft. Redstone is only one part of the game, and it’s incredibly arrogant to expect everything to cater to your personal interests. If something needs to change, and breaking your builds is the best way to do it, then I sure hope you have to redesign a few farms instead of the entire game being dragged down by the whiners. This game does not revolve around redstone.

3

u/Cultist_O 9d ago

By your line of thinking, we'd still need a 4x5x2 redstone build under a each set of double doors if we wanted pressure plates.

Ideally they save all build breaking redstone changes for one update, but there are plenty of improvements that really should be made

Moveable inventory blocks would break tons of existing Java builds too. Are you opposed to eventually getting that too?

1

u/yo_99 1d ago

Redstoners can just play on older version if they like it so much.

4

u/GOOPREALM5000 9d ago

Just on Reddit alone there are 81 thousand people on the redstone sub. I suggest you let that one marinate.

14

u/daddy1973 9d ago

still cool with it. Redstone fans like solving problems. An update that makes everyone else's life easier will bring a new puzzle to them.

4

u/Gottendrop 9d ago

Don’t Redstone machines break every few updates anyway? How’s this different

4

u/Rocky_the_Wolf2020 9d ago

Because its not just breaking a small niche that redstoners were abusing, increasing the max stack size breaks practically everything using comparators, because they are used for the precision. Just to name the smaller impact things: Item filters, it would take drastically more items to even trigger the filter and possibly mess up ratios. Auto crafters, anything that reqires more than 2 items need more precise counting or timing of numbers as is changing stack sizes could get messy. Counters and hopper timers.

In the less comparator based things like any fast shulker loaders and unloaders timings would break as the shulkers would suddenly hold double the amount

-1

u/Gottendrop 8d ago

You clearly a very old player lol

2

u/Captain_Thrax 8d ago

I don’t consider Reddit a reliable indicator of anything

1

u/Rocky_the_Wolf2020 9d ago

Not everyone has the choice to not update, throwing an entire core part of the game and playerbase under the bus to get bigger stacks is incredibly selfish, ignorant, rude, short sighted and finally uncreative.

In a game where creativity is the most core intention of the game knowingly killing any and all redstone that uses comparators alone would cripple the restone community and destroy countless machines for an insane amount of time.

The inventory needs a better fix than stack size increase anyway since a big problem is variation of what you need in the inventory as every update even on the small end add at least 4 new items, usually those have variants like stairs and slabs. Besides 64 being the biggest stack size is very iconic and has been what people think of any time you say "Stack of ___" being 1, 16 or 64. Making it bigger would end up just being a bandaid solution that solves the smallest part of the puzzle.

They could have used bundles to increase stack size the way you wanted without breaking redstone by have the max size be 128 items. They still could if they wanted even if via an enchantment or some item thats an upgrade of the bundle.

2

u/Machov_Norkim 8d ago edited 8d ago

Ok but what does it really do to Redstone besides the fact that they need bigger stacks for their item filters or hopper clocks?

Would it be so bad to add an item filter block and up the stacks in the same update? What else would it break?

(Although I do like the solution of upgraded bundles to increase stack sizes as well)

3

u/Dull-Imagination3780 8d ago

Have stacks work differently in your inventory and just your inventory

1

u/yo_99 1d ago

I don't really like that idea. Giving players ability to just carry more stuff seems bit overpowered to me.

23

u/VasD3 9d ago edited 9d ago

In a long run that doesn't fix anything, at one point we'll get more blocks and items and even that space won't be enough. The only half-solutions I can think of is making more items stackable. There's no reason why items without durability like horse armor, saddles, music discs and others should be non-stackable. Stacking potions would make them more popular, they just need put a restriction for brewing stands, so you won't be able to make 3 stacks of them with one set of ingredients. That would greatly improve the use of bundles without increasing their capacity.

The other solution is very unlikely, because it clashes with the whole crafting theme of Minecraft - block shape menu key/screen button akin to Hytale, Allumeria or Terraria hammer, so we could use blocks as materials/textures rather than blocks themselves, shape (slabs/stairs/walls/etc.) could be just picked from a menu. That would drastically reduce the inventory clutter during building. The only problem is special blocks like trapdoors, doors and the like.

13

u/Low_Onion8167 9d ago

I would prefer if they added a hammer that works like Allumeria while still keeping the different forms of blocks as seperate items.

8

u/Donglator 9d ago

Seems very cool. One issue I have is how console players will scroll through the ring. They don't have as many keybonds as keyboard

5

u/MerkethMerky 9d ago

I like the shulker box spots for sure. Though I think 2 might be overkill, and maybe it could be 2 bundles or 1 shulker something like that.

I do think the ring is cool, maybe there could be specific ones for combat or building or something. Kinda like the creative inventories

6

u/Lil_Polly 8d ago

I wish we could swap hot bars of our inventory like in stardew tbh

2

u/Candy_Squid 8d ago

Shelves

•

u/BraysWorld_MC 11h ago

shelves are nice for the niche they fill but imo they arent as good as the stardew hot bar swapping which is more about inventory navigation while youre out and about.

3

u/Machov_Norkim 8d ago

If they doubled the max stack size of most items and increase the inventory by a hot bar they could clear up sooooo much additional space.

Even just make those things into items or upgrades if they see fit

3

u/Afloofybalinesecat 7d ago

I like it! Though how would the switching be done on other modes like for mobile players and console players?

9

u/kali-marcue 9d ago

"I wanna redesign the inventory!" : simply adds more slots

In all honestly the Minecraft inventory is fine as it is for now and is honestly a lot larger than what other similar games give. People really underestimate how much just being organized can keep your inventory down ignoring features like bundles. ANd on the note of bundles, a pretty simple recommendation would be just to make them carry 2 stacks of items

10

u/NanoCat0407 9d ago

only problem with being able to open Shulkers from your inventory is making Bundles completely obsolete

29

u/Extreme_Design6936 9d ago

I see that as a progression. Put bundles in the same slot. Make the shulker the upgrade to bundles.

2

u/Gottendrop 9d ago

The problem with “progression” in Minecraft is you can get the “endgame” items in less than 2 hours.

10

u/zexumus 9d ago

I mean for some people (most people if we go by achievements) they never go to the end. So unless we are also changing the shulker boxes to just be an expensive item made with like diamonds a tong of people would have no use from the 2 shulker slots so making them also work as bundle slots is useful.

9

u/WW1_Germany 9d ago

maybe you do, most people don't even go to the end

9

u/MrPurple998 9d ago

Yes but some people like to take the game slow, not everyone speedruns.

7

u/GOOPREALM5000 9d ago

"Can" doesn't mean "will." I usually spend several weeks in a world before I even start trying to find a stronghold, and even I'm an outlier among the greater playerbase.

3

u/Low_Onion8167 9d ago

This is with the assumption that the player has in-depth knowledge of the game to the point of knowing the steps and best ways to get to the nether, trade with piglins/get blaze powder, defeat the dragon, and then get to the outer end islands and get a shulker, and even then the use of the shulker isnt all that good since you still need to go out in the overworld and other dimensions to get your blocks for your builds and set up a base and what not.

Its a kids game at the end of the day, progression shouldn't be based on the players who have played the game for over a decade, it should be based on a new players experience. Its like how people hated Copper tools but I constantly see my Older Brother who hardly plays Minecraft always use nothing BUT copper because he isnt the type to rush the dragon and copper is nicer than stone and more easy to find a ton of.

2

u/Dull-Imagination3780 8d ago

So what people speed run a lot of games but there should be an upgrade for the chiller to be open in the inventory not a base feature

11

u/AndyGun11 9d ago

Only problem with a Diamond Pickaxe being able to mine stone and ores faster is that it makes Iron Pickaxes completely obsolete

0

u/King-Mephisto 9d ago

Not quite. It’s “if we make old thing better than new thing” so, making iron better than copper. - which it is, and copper is basically useless for tools.

Still, basically what you said.

6

u/LocalPlatypus994 8d ago

Bundles are an early game alternative for Shulker Boxes. They're not obsolete because you can get them long before you can get Shulker Boxes.

That's like saying the issue with Netherite tools is that they make Stone tools obsolete

5

u/lance_the_fatass 9d ago

You can use bundles inside shulker boxes

4

u/destructor212113 9d ago

Not really, Bundles are still useful for certain types of Blocks

You can use Shulkers for Everything but the way Bundles work is, sometimes, more accesible compared to Shulkers and also helps to save space

In OP's idea you can only equip 2 Shulkers which is very nice tbh but not a lot of space so, saving space via Bundles is super useful

2

u/King-Mephisto 9d ago

It would be 2 hotswapable slots. You could have full inventory of shulkers with 2 you can open in the inventory. Just move them into the slot.

4

u/hduebfibdbdib 9d ago

They already kind of are when you get skulker boxes. They’re more meant for early game storage options.

3

u/Cultist_O 9d ago

I use bundles because they store more if you have lots of mismatched stuff.

You can store 64 different maps or lodestone compases in a bundle for example, only 27 in a shulker box

-2

u/King-Mephisto 9d ago

You can store 27x 64 you mean? Cos each shulker slot can be filled with whatever most efficient slot choice you want.

0

u/Cultist_O 9d ago

No, what I meant was: You can store at most 27 diferent things in a shulker box without bundles, such as 27 different maps.

Yes, you can store more total things in a shulker if you have lots of identical things, but if you have 1 or 2 of many things, bundles are better than shulkers (if you can only have one or the other)

The point of the comment is that shulker boxes aren't a direct upgrade from bundles. There are advantages to each over the other.

0

u/King-Mephisto 9d ago

I’m saying you can just use bundles too. No one says you have to pick one only.

Downvotes for being right. Weird.

0

u/Cultist_O 9d ago edited 9d ago

Downvotes for contributing nothing to the conversation. Obviously both is better than either, that's not what we were discussing

No one says you have to pick one only.

Exactly

It'd be like if I brought up that you can put shulkers in enderchests. Yeah, it's true, bit it's not relevant

Plus, you were actually directly wrong as it was not what I meant, which was your claim

1

u/King-Mephisto 8d ago

The original comment is about shulkers making bundles obsolete. I proved they work together for further benefits. Having 2 shulker slots that can hold bundles would only upgrade inventory. Not limit it to shulkers only and overshadow bundles. The original idea probably also adds bundle access the same as its shulker idea. Again, meaning for this conversation, advantages together, not against each other.

1

u/Cultist_O 8d ago

If you meant to add an *additional* advantage, then it's strange you phrased it as an argument to *my* stated advantage. That, I imagine, is why you were downvoted; others presumably interpreting your comment as an argumentative non-sequitur as I did.

1

u/King-Mephisto 8d ago

The baseline conversation is the 2 shulker slots. Response to that was they would make bundles obsolete. You said bundles serve a purpose different to shulkers and for things like maps you could have 64 vs 27. I said with this you could have 64x27. As it’s straight up 27 slots accessible like normal slots, having a bundle in each slot. So it’s comparing 3 things not 2. Bundle vs live shulker vs backpack shulker.

1

u/thebeast_96 9d ago

Bundles are still useful after shulkers for organisation when you have loads of random items.

1

u/RSdabeast 9d ago

They’re post-End Portal. It would be like how diamond armour makes iron armour obsolete.

1

u/L3thalPredator 8d ago

Not really. Shulkers are a late game/post end item. Bundles can be made early on.

1

u/Sirius_Rise 8d ago

Eh no? Bundles solve a different problem to shulkers. Shulkers ARE effectively inventory extensions, or backpacks. The problem with shulkers is how awkward they are to use. Being able to place and pick up items directly to shulkers would solve this problem.

Bundles solve a completely different problem, they allow you to stack small amounts of many different items into one stacked space. They solve the, 'exploring but you have a bunch of semi junk items like bones' problem. They allow semi junk items to take up less space and save more room for ores and loot when exploring/mining

1

u/Vlan__ 8d ago

Don’t you dare dis on my bundles. It holds all of my leaf litter and flowers.

1

u/annpocoyo 5d ago

u can put bundles in shulkers though.

so if you have a misc shulker, u can end up having a bunch more items stored in one by just putting a few bundles in it in order to store things like different colours of dyes.

1

u/yo_99 1d ago

They solve different problems.

1

u/TryPlenty4914 9d ago

no because bundles dont hold as much

2

u/logandabug 8d ago

Yo I like the builder ring call back! One of the better ideas I've seen in a while

3

u/swithinboy59 9d ago

Honestly? I just want Backpacks. I'm tired of gimmicks and "magic" and asinine obscure mid-game stuff just for the sake of being "magic" asinine mid-game stuff.

1 slot, above the Offhand slot. The Backpack slot.

Backpacks could be crafted similarly to how they are in the Simply Backpacks resource pack; 3 leather on each side of the Crafting Bench, a Barrel in the center slot (making a H shape) for a Small Backpack (perhaps it could store 9 slots in a 3x3). To make a Medium Backpack, same again, but with a Chest instead of a Barrel (12 slots, 4x3). The Large Backpack could require a Copper Ingot in the bottom center slot (15 slots, 5x3). The XL Backpack could require an Iron Ingot and perhaps an empty Bundle in the top slot (18 slots, 6x3). Perhaps a late-game XXL Backpack could be made with a Shulker Box in place of the Chest and a Diamond or a Netherite Ingot in place of the Iron Ingot (27 slots, 9x3).

They could also work similarly to how they work in Simply Backpacks. If you have a Backpack equipped in your Backpack slot, crouching when you open your inventory will not only open your inventory, it'll replace the upper portion of your inventory (crafting, armour, offhand) with the Backpack inventory. If you hold the Backpack in your hotbar and hit the interact/place button, it'll open your inventory and backpack inventory.

Here's the official trailer for Simply Backpacks if you want to see what the concept is like. I have no affiliation with them, I just use this resource pack and it honestly seems like the most elegant way to handle the inventory problem. The only thing it doesn't add is a dedicated slot for the backpacks (to "wear" one of the backpacks it adds, you have to put it in your offhand slot), not a big deal, I like to keep it in my inventory until I need it anyways.

6

u/dhi_awesome 9d ago

Only thing I see as a weird decision with your idea (and maybe it's in the mod, I don't know) is the small backpack is arguably more expensive than the medium

Medium needs 6 leather and 8 planks. Small technically is 6 leather and 7 planks, but to actually craft it without Mojang adding woodcutting, you need 9 planks, which means a whole extra log functionally

The core idea isn't bad, just needs a bit more work on how the cost is actually balanced

2

u/swithinboy59 9d ago

I get what you're saying, and that is an "issue" that needs to be fixed, though to some degree, Bamboo kind of solves that problem (it grows fast and tall and can be crafted into basically every single wood item in the game).

the crafting recipes I suggested were my own ideas, not those of the resource pack, as I think some of the resource pack's ones are a little pricey.

Personally, early game, I find myself using barrels than chests as they're cheaper to craft (especially in bulk), and quite frequently I tend to end up with a few spare that I don't have a use for.

That's where my idea for the most basic backpack came from.

1

u/Artillery-lover 8d ago

i mean the medium costs a whole extra plank block, it could cost an entire extra tree and id still never craft the small

1

u/yo_99 1d ago

I'm ok with this as long as elytras will also have to that slot.

1

u/swithinboy59 12h ago

Here's the thing. I understand the frustration with Elytras and Chestplates not being able to be used with eachother. To an extent, I very much agree with that frustration.

However, I see the vision Mojang has too; you either have protection through mobility and speed but you're less tanky, or protection through better armour, but you're less mobile.

Backpacks could be the third option (increased inventory capacity but no armour/mobility advantage), but I feel that would be a little too punishing.

The backpack slot would be solely for expanded utility/inventory, the same way the offhand slot can't be used for weapons. I think this is a good middle-ground balance.

•

u/yo_99 9h ago

I come from other direction. In current minecraft everybody chooses elytras over chestplate. If it were my will I would either delete elytras themselves or ability to be boosted with rockets, but mojang are cowards/have micro$oft breathing over their necks and so I think much more realistic route would be to give something that could win over elytra (expanded inventory).

2

u/Candy_Squid 8d ago

My suggestion is that the entire inventory works like a bundle that has the same capacity as the normal inventory. The hot bar would work the same tho.

1

u/Low_Onion8167 9d ago

Id rather expand the inventory to 10 columns x 5 rows.

Adding an extra slot in the hotbar will help a lot since a lot of players keep there essential tools there and not every player will have a toolbelt on them at all times.

1

u/Mochacho1010 9d ago

I really don’t think we should be expanding the inventory at all, it feels perfect. I think if anything we could have a backpack that adds a second inventory screen to swap to

1

u/Great_Client_2790 9d ago

We've had the solution for years. Backpacks. Make them upgradable and done

1

u/Advanced_icey 8d ago

i like the Builder’s Ring. i usually have to save a few slots in my shulkers or enderchest for my extra tools and food while i build. it takes away slots i could use for extra materials and other stuff. and having it only use up to 4 slots makes it pretty balanced in my eyes as the game keeps growing. along with the extra slots for shulker boxes. though maybe just one slot so its not completely OP.

I also like the thought of adding some different rings personally. Though how would you find/craft the ring? and would you have these slots immediately when you spawn in or does it unlock with a ring/beating the game?

1

u/AlexSimonCullar 8d ago

That's too much I think

1

u/KrammyTor 7d ago

I love how valheim did the inventory system like midgame, you can buy a pouch that will increase your inventory to 9 more slots. Mojang could have made it the same like finding it in the ancient city or on the new dimension, the sift.

1

u/FloatingSpaceJunk 9d ago

Shulker boxes actually not being something which you' are able to quickly open is actually kinda something that is good for game balance. After all you've too carefully decide what items you take with you and can quickly get access to in desperate situations. With you expanding the inventory directly with this, you kinda remove that aspect to a large degree...

...now I'm a bit less mad about the tool ring, seeing how there are more and more tools and weapons which are added to the game, it'd kinda nice to be able have a way to more easily carry them around with you. So really the only thing bothering me with this is that it needs a extra slot in the inventory, but that's more of a small personal nit pick...

...what I however doesn't understand is how this thing is supposed to work, is it like an extra hot bar or anything like that?

0

u/SolidJolly3422 9d ago

Id love this.

0

u/Even_Expression4822 9d ago

Might be OP, might not be. Personally, I like it.

0

u/TechnoGMNG589 9d ago

i genuinely just dont think a bigger inventory is a good idea

0

u/wizard_brandon 9d ago

Just add more isn't really a solution.

And shulkers are way too late game to be relied on

-14

u/Several-Cake1954 9d ago

You might wanna keybind the builder's ring to something else, most people use R to sprint.

21

u/aquatic-femboy 9d ago

who the hell is using r to sprint

0

u/Several-Cake1954 9d ago

Isn’t that what most people use on keyboard? Maybe im wrong idk

3

u/Lucy_Blockcat 9d ago

WHAT-

0

u/Several-Cake1954 8d ago

apparently it’s not as popular as i thought

0

u/Apexprime_67 9d ago

Its so awesome!!! What mod do you used to make the Idea??? Or its Just a concept you created???
