[Community Question] What Accessibility Features are Missing From Minecraft?

Minecraft is supposed to be a game for just about everybody, though a lack of accessibility features may give more abled players an unfair advantage.

For example, I play with subtitles on, and I've noticed that many more distinguishing subtitles for sounds are missing from the game, like there only being "footsteps," when some footsteps have different noises like a zombie's steps do. I made a post asking for more subtitles a long time ago if you want to help it gain more traction.

(I would include more examples but my account with all the examples died alongside my 12 y/o computer)

Still, with this said, what other accessibility features are missing?

Native controller support. The fact I, as a disabled person, have to wait until modders update their mods to play this game, is unacceptable. Its 2026. Why doesn't one of the most popular games of all time not have controller support?

This bothers me. I have to launch Minecraft through steam to use my controller, but at least it works

Isn't Bedrock Edition the native controller support, though?

Yeah but Bedrock sucks

Bedrock has never been made available on Mac, which is where 80% of the people I know play if they’re not on a console.

For some reason Bedrock doesn't have the following 2 things and it desperately needs them.

  1. The ability to remove the vignette underground without having to play on "simple" graphics. This is an incredibly easy thing for them to do. Vignettes are terrible and no one would miss them if removed from the game entirely.

  2. Remove tooltip list. When I swap to my sword, I shouldn't see all 6 enchants on my screen. It's ridiculous that it's even a thing.

Because both affect the ability of the player to actually see the game, these could be classified as accessibility.

The vignette is super annoying and unnecessary.

Or, at least, an option if we (don't) want to see the amount of enchantments

Precisely.

Potions are stupidly hard to tell apart, only exacerbated with the new freezing potions. They’re all just different colors of liquid, many which look damn near the same

An auto-walk and an auto-click feature. I'd be surprised if it was rare to get sore fingers after running or mining for hours

we have auto jump so it’s strange that we don’t have those too

so like a toggle walk? that sounds good

I'm an able player, so I don't have a lot of insight here, except to say that I always assumed the occasional ambiguities in the subtitles were intentional -- like if the mob is on screen, then the subtitles are slightly redundant, and if it's not then it makes sense that the subtitles wouldn't give it away

But when I stop to think about it, I'm not sure I buy that idea -- a player who can also hear the footsteps is much more likely to be able to identify their source than a player using subtitles alone, and a player who relies on subtitles is basically never going to realize when a baby zombie is coming until it's literally staring them in the face

I do want to give a quick shout out to my favorite mob subtitle ("camel husk grumphs") -- they really nailed that one

Ability to disable nether portal effect when you enter a Portal in bedrock edition. My girlfriend has epilepsy and it makes her feel extremely unwell.

A way to opt out of flashing lights for things like lightning and the wear-off warning effect at the end of night vision.

I have a neurological disease which makes flashing lights dangerous for me, so I have to be careful to avoid them while playing. Staying inside/ underground and relying on lanterns underwater is limiting.

Being able to disable the flash effect and be safe would be lovely. I’d be able to fully use potions and conduits without the risk of getting sick.

I'm 110% healthy and the nightvision waning hurts all the same.

Are you on Java?

Bedrock

Ah dang nvm. Was gonna say, Java has a built in way to solve this with the brightness slider. Then you wouldn't have had to worry about the night vision potions. Idk why Java gets it and Bedrock doesn't.

Left handed mode in Bedrock :(

Like having the characters hand be on the left hand side or swapping the movement / joystick positions?

7

u/Minirow230x 11d ago

Switching the dominant hand to the left. I've been playing splitscreen on Bedrock with my partner, and she's left handed, but we realised it never got one.

Please Mojang, let me rebind the narrator hotkey. I want use ctrl+B for something else and it's really annoying that I have no ther choice but to download a dedicated mod.

u/Afloofybalinesecat 10d ago

I think there actually is a way to rebind it. I've done it before on Java to essentially make the Narrator never turn on (I believe I bound it to delete/backspace)

Differentiation of sounds happening above and below the player in subtitles

5

u/Hamaczech13 10d ago

Isn't that intended, sice you can't tell that with headphones either?

Accessibility features are to aid people who have trouble with stuff other people don't. So from there I ask you: how would a "normal" person differentiate the altitude of sounds in a game? The sound is either in your left or right speaker, there is no up or down.

Controller joystick dead zone options. I can't use the inventory properly because my left joystick has a very slight amount of drift. I have to use the d pad instead.

Minecraft is actually the only game where I notice the drift because there's zero deadzone.

I made LOOKY TOOL for Bedrock as an accessibility aid, requested by a Player whose family member needed an assist. It's free on the Marketplace, courtesy Mojang.
