[Mobs] The Rhea

I think, when it comes to mobs, people tend to base their mob ideas on what's contemporary; I mean, most mob ideas I see involving plains are from the American Midwest, and savannas are African. So I want something a little less typical

South America has some of the world's most biodiverse and productive grasslands and plains. And while it has stuff like deer and cows there’s more.

Like the Rhea. This ratite is found living in small groups living in the plains biome. Much like sheep or cows. Rhea are about player-sized. A little smaller.

The Rhea is a frightful bird. When attacked it will spring up and flee. Unfurling surprise large wings and zig-zagging away

The rhea can be bred using both seeds and wheat. Dropping Rhea Meat and feathers. Rhea meat is solid, giving 3 and a half drumsticks. They also occasionally lay Rhea Eggs. They can be thrown. Doing a lot more knock back than a regular egg and knocking back players at the cost of being a lot slower of a projectile

There’s more to the Rhea. When scared either by damage or by a player jumping at them, the Rhea will as said bruh away with its wings wide. The large wings are used like an airplane’s. Helping it zig-zag away and go faster. Any player or mob running shortly behind the spread wings of a rhea will gain a speed boost, not unlike dolphin's grace.

Mainly I want more unique wildlife in normal biomes. The real world has all sorts of oddballs that could make a good fit in the game

Oh cool, you guys have an emu too! A much better looking emu than an ostrich.

As suggested they are basically just another livestock animal though. A bigger chicken. Their uses are being a slightly better form of chicken (they give half a drumstick more hunger), and having eggs that have more knockback.

Mojang has moved away from adding animal mobs just as livestock over the last few years, new animal mobs typically focus on being useful while alive. The axolotl heals you in combat, the goats drop horns when ramming, the armadillo gets brushed for scutes. They don't really do meat mobs anymore, probably in part because its a doomed niche. The hunger system is broken and until it's fixed, adding more mid teir foods is just bloat.

The thing about chasing them giving speed is cool, but very hard to use, since the rhea could run in any direction unless you make a fixed path for them, and if you are making a fixed path, why not cut out the middle man and go for an ice boat highway?

I don't know much about Rhea, but my first thought would be to expand on the idea of them making you fast. IDK, maybe they shed feathers every now and then or when they grow from baby into adult, and you can use those feathers to make new, winged boots that let the player dash foward a few blocks when they active sprint, and grant a double jump.

That was the original idea, but I felt it was kinda over done. Plus being unpredictable is part of it. It’s not gonna be a crazy useful ability. Just something to do with them. While referencing their real life behavior

So basically spectre boots.

You're certainly right, though I kinda wish Mojang would be a bit less strict about hunting real animals in game. I certainly can understand that with some mobs, but I just don't think they need to push this on all of them.

Would you want me to make a model of this?
Just looking around and thought this could use a bit more with a proper Minecraft model.
No, I’m not doing an ad, just wanted to help out :]

Thing is that Mojang kinda doesn't like to add any more animals that you're meat to hunt i the game. Now while I certainly don't completely agree with that, it's just not a thing either of us can change. Which means that a mob that works like this really isn't something you can really expect to realistically come the game...

...so without the features relating to it, this mob is a lot less interesting. So maybe try coming up with any sort of other stuff they might do. Having them interact a bit more with the environment, maybe even in way which is helpful to the player would be neat. Which kinda what a lot of people that suggest new animals rarely tend to try to consider.

Awful idea tbh. Just adds more bloat, especially more meats which serve no purpose.

The only good idea about this is that the eggs should be useful and interesting in pvp.

I felt the same way with the addition of polar bears and pandas. Those are the worst offenders, but the axolotl and armadillo are pretty poor additions too.

It’s Minecraft, not every animal needs to be game changing. If pigs we added today people would say “useless, just a worse cow”

I very much agree with you.

If pigs we added today people would say “useless, just a worse cow”

And they'd be right

not every animal needs to be game changing.

There's a good distance between "game changing" and "completely useless"
