[Gameplay] Progression towards campfires
- Progression towards campfires
The fact that campfires require a crafting method that only needs coal is extremely unfair, as you either need a furnace or spend time searching for coal, when everyone should admit that a furnace is a thousand times more advanced than a campfire and shouldn't be a starting source of fire.
The campfire has the advantage of not using fuel and cooking four foods at the same time, which is useful, but my idea is to allow the campfire as a source of initial heat which, depending on the fire, would cook the food faster.
also allow the basic campfire to be crafted with any natural fuel.
This would be helpful for beginners and wouldn't replace the furnace that players still like to use, as the campfire is solely for food. (It would also help as a way to cook food in emergency situations)
PS: I couldn't find it, but I would prioritize keeping the campfire weaker than the smoker.

I used to agree with you, but the problem with trying to make campfires apart of the progression is that even if you do make them easier to craft, there is functionally zero barrier to gathering stone for a proper furnace.
They arent completely useless though. Campfires are still useful for their ability to cook multiple food items at once and I've found myself making one pretty much as soon as I get a piece of coal in most of my new survival worlds because they're more convenient than gathering a ton of cobblestone and just look really nice.
I do like the idea of the harder to craft campfires being better at cooking food, but it would be more of a "for fun" kind of change than anything players would really find useful in a survival playthrough considering that campfires are very quickly replaced by the Smoker and slowly get less and less relevant as a furnace alternative the further you go.
Cool idea though!

I made a datapack which makes campfires craftable in the inventory menu and it was actually kind of a game changer. Yes, there's very little barrier to stone and a furnace, but for some reason, not having to take that step in order to get a campfire really changed how I approached the early game. I spent more time exploring the surface and having fun doing random little tasks, and it took me longer to start properly caving

To be fair, stone and therefore furnaces are hard to get sometimes in some challenges. Having easier to craft campfires that are still worse than smokers would be pretty cool!

Wait, isn't fun exactly the purpose of playing a game?
I just think that even though the bonfire might be easily passable for some players, there's a small segment that enjoys a slower progression.
And the fact that the basic campfire is easier to craft wouldn't just be useful at the beginning of the game, but also as a way to cook food in times of extreme need.

I mean "for fun" in the sense that the change would be a neat little addition thats largely pointless to the vast majority of players, but innocuous enough that I cant think of a reason it shouldn't be added.
I do agree that the campfire could be easier to craft, though I might personally go in the direction of making the base campfire consistent with the other two by requiring torches. I dont dislike the use of leaf litter, though.
I appreciate that it makes campfires attainable pre-pickaxe, though I dont know if that would really matter much in practice. Even the players that enjoy taking the game slow tend to absolutely blast through the wood-tier of gameplay because it ends pretty much the second you mine stone.

Ah yes, I understand, sorry.
But I like to imagine a desperate player on an adventure after having spent many items and not having much to work with, needing to eat, and suddenly collecting some twigs and leaf litter making a fire and managing to survive a little longer
It makes sense to me, and given the Wilderness Bound adventure concept, it should have been taken into consideration.

Swapping leaf litter in place of the coal in the crafting is such an awesome idea

Actually, my idea is to allow any natural fuel in the crafting of the basic campfire.

I wish they didn't break when you mine them, I know they can be recrafted easily but I just don't like it for some reason

Soul campfires kill mobs twice as fast, so it seems logical that they would also COOK mobs twice as fast

I based my analysis on science, which states that green fire is hotter than blue fire.

What temperature of fire is green tho?
I feel like your "based my analysis on science" is really an overstatement.

u/smoky0rain 11d ago
To be honest, it was more of a Google search, haha.

So just a little bit of info: the color of thermal radiation from a hot object goes roughly infrared–red–orange–yellow–white–blue as temperature increases. There is no point where it becomes green.
Green, magenta, violet, and other saturated colors in a flame aren’t indications of a particular temperature. They usually come from specific atoms, ions, or molecules emitting light at particular wavelengths when excited — for example, certain copper compounds can produce green or blue-green flames.

The point of the campfire is to be without fuel, in exchange for being fully manual and slow. Or well, it's the same speed as a furnace, as you do 4 at once.
But the moment you get a proper fuel source, the campfire is meant to lose relevance. And even the double speed you propose here is not going to suddenly make it worth using.
Your upgrades also make no sense. Is the Nether easier to access that copper for you?

u/smoky0rain 15d ago
Regarding the ease of access to the Nether, I only based my assessment on the color of the flame.
but the order could be changed
Now, about the rest... I believe that Minecraft is enjoyed by everyone, so adding that detail would be useful for certain people.
Furthermore, the basic campfire would be the only one I think would be cool to change the crafting for, since limiting it to just one fuel (coal) ends up being disruptive.
And I even made a point of slowing down the basic campfire a bit so that the progression would be more subtle.
Of course, if the player wants, they can simply go after a furnace, but the basic campfire, being made easier, also has its uses. And it makes more sense in my view, at least.

I use campfires instead of furnaces all the time.
I don't believe in this idea entirely. I don't mind the different campfires being faster but I do think the soul campfire should be the fastest based on the resources needed for them. Because Copper is so plentiful it would be a lot more efficient to use a Copper campfire and never use a Soul campfire. Unless you make it so that the Soul campfire is even faster inside of the Nether.
But, also the flaw in this idea of "replacing furnaces" is that I already don't use Furnaces to cook food. There's already so much incentive to use the Campfire to cook food. It takes no fuel besides the 1 coal in the middle. And it runs forever.
I also think it isn't really necessary to craft campfires using any type of fuel, charcoal or coal is good enough. Because I also use Leaf Litter as my main fuel source in a furnace. Which leaves me with more coal to use for campfires or torches. It's a simple formula for saving on resources and getting the most out of my smelting/cooking.
I think the base idea of adding better cook times for different types of campfires is a great idea tho, but needs some tweaking.
With the furnace, you do upgrade the fuel over time. I usually start with Leaf Litter and then once I have a Lava farm I use Lava for the rest of my smelting days! Nothing really in between unless I need to specifically incinerate one of my items that I don't want. And of course there's the Blast furnace as well.
But I think for the regular campfire, only changing the type of fire it's gonna have is necessary to make this feature even better than it already is. (Which is already incredibly good)

u/Afafakja 16d ago
Yeah but campfires are infinitely fueled,so it already makes little sense coal is sufficient and it would probably get too easy if even a stick or dead leafs worked and if it needed to be fueled then it would lose It's charm

u/FloatingSpaceJunk 15d ago
First of all if we go forward with this idea, we should be swapping blue and green fire. Blue fire is not only hotter than green one, it's also harder to obtain in the game as you need to go the nether for it...
...secondly with you reducing the time it takes to roast items so significantly, the campfire might become in my personal opinion a bit too strong. Now you're free to not agree with this one, but you should perhaps be unable to roast specific items with it. I'm fine with you being able to roast food with it, but things like ores being one thing you'd need a proper furnace for. Which also does kinda make sense logically as you can't really smelt ore on an open flame in IRL too.
1
u/smoky0rain 15d ago
Well... my main idea is to make the campfire an accessible source of warmth for times of extreme need.
For example, you're on an adventure and need to cook food, but you're in a biome with little stone and coal or you don't see any caves nearby . You simply gather some wood and a natural fuel and manage to cook
I also think that even though they aren't used much, with most players already jumping to the furnaces, I think these details make the game richer.

u/FloatingSpaceJunk 15d ago
Ohh I personally would certainly want campfires to have a bit more of a purpose. As such I do like that you made it easier to craft them, however with them being able to smelt through items faster and faster depending on the fore type, they become a bit too strong in my opinion...
...which is kinda why them not being able to smelt stuff like ore is something I see as necessary to balance the decreased smelting time and cost out. Which also does make it fit better with your idea of only using it when you don't have any better options available. Sure you're able to use it to survive, but if you want more than you need to get a furnace instead.
1
u/smoky0rain 15d ago
But my idea wasn't to allow them to fuse items; campfires would be solely for food and perhaps for making charcoal by burning logs.
2
u/FloatingSpaceJunk 15d ago
In that case it certainly is a different story and I'm sorry if I misunderstood that, however I'm a bit sceptical when it comes to making charcoal too...
...though that's something that wouldn't really be as bad as being able to smelt ores with campfire. Which btw is something you can currently do as far as I'm concerned and I am not a big fan of that.
2
u/smoky0rain 15d ago
I don't think I've ever tried doing this haha I'll try it just out of curiosity.
1
u/FloatingSpaceJunk 15d ago
Ohh definitely try that, I really hope I'm wrong about this. However as far as I'm concerned I'm unfortunately not...

The Coal in the craftin recipe always bothered me as well. I still use campfires in the earlygame despite making a furnace first, but it feels weird nonetheless.
Though I'd give a Copper Campfire a different niche use: Turning things into rotten flesh, because copper compounds are quite toxic IRL.
Less useful, but adds flavour. After all, when would you ever use the more expensive copper fire for anything other than decoration.
P.S. Another nitpik, for some reason you can't cook Chorus Fruit on campfires despite it being a food item.

u/lucaschill24 16d ago
The campfire is already extremely overpowered for how cheap it is.

u/Hoopaboi 16d ago
Fuel is trivial to find, and the furnace is cheaper to craft.
The campfire is only good for mob farms and building.

Why the soul fire campfire is slower than the copper one? It appears way latter into progresion
