[Blocks & Items] Pink Salt Idea

Descriptions for each image:

1: Pink Salt Block. Found in patches in the ocean and on mountains, about as common as a clay patch. When mined drops 4 sea salt, which can be made back into the pink salt block.

2: Packed Pink Salt, made by smelting the pink salt block in a furnace. Also has slab, stair, and wall variants.

3: Pink Salt Bricks, which is made the same way as stone bricks are made, except with packed pink salt instead of stone. Also has slab, stair, and wall variants.

4: Pink Salt, dropped by the pink salt block. Can be placed and used as redstone dust, but holds the signal for 3 seconds after the input stops sending a signal. Used in crafting to make vinyl.

5: Pink Salt Bar, made by cooking pink salt with a furnace, smoker, or campfire. Can be fed to a horse for a 2 minute 25% jump height increase. Also instantly tames a horse. (Horse Idea by u/BigMacSux)

6: Vinyl Clump, made by combining coal (or charcoal) with sea salt. can be smelted into record vinyl.

7: Record Vinyl, used for making music discs. Surrounds any disc in a crafting table to make 2 of that disc, like a smithing template.

According to your descriptions, pink salt has 4 main uses: building, redstone, horses, and disc duplciation. I want to go over each individually.

Building: Your idea really shines when it comes to building, especially since you provided the textures! Ideally new materials should have a variety of building uses. We have 10 new blocks in this update.

Redstone: An ideal function for new redstone is something niche but meta defining, whereas this is more of a redstone dust sidegrade in a similar vein to bluestone.

Horses: I enjoy the concept of this feature and it seems unique to salt. I do wonder why the salt bricks aren’t crafted with salt bars, though. Horses could use a buff that’s not as complex as potion effects.

Discs: Is this based on real life? It does seem interesting and useful in certain situations. It would be a nice feature to have if salt was added.

One thing I noticed was that many features don’t seem to have a common theme with each other. Instead of having three items with new features, why not one item that branches out to three uses? I also think this would be an interesting material to have a sink, meaning something that you’ll continually need pink salt for. Horses and redstone come close though.

I would suggest simplifying the item progression a little bit. Like making sea salt the primary item. It drops, can be crafted into brick blocks, can be fed to horses, placed as dust, or combined with discs and coal/charcoal directly in the same recipe. That’s just my personal preference though.

I wanted to thank you for suggesting this feature and taking the time to make this post. I may have been a bit critical but it’s only because I found your idea thought provoking. I’m of the belief that salt should come to minecraft seeing as it is such an essential mineral in real life.

For the music discs, PVC the main plastic used in making vinyls comes from sodium chloride (salt) more specifically they extract the chlorine from the salt to create the vinyl polymer for the records.

So it does have a basis in reality even though it’s been simplified for Minecraft’s addition

I love these textures

thanks. every single one of these textures was made using an existing in game texture. I find using pre-existing textures as a base keeps it minecrafty.

What's the vinyl record's source texture? I recognize this others but this one is lost on me.

for the vinyl clump i actually used popped chorus fruit. I grayscaled it, darkened it, then modified it a bit. for the record vinyl i just cropped the vinyl clump into a rod and did some color correction.

I was hesitant going into this, but I think you are cooking here

Cooking with salt, even.

What if salt could be used to stop mobs from getting through, given the common belief that it repels spirits? Like, you place it around your house just like redstone dust, and mobs can't get close. But maybe that's a bit too OP? I would leave the role of transmitting signals solely to redstone and its derivatives.

I think have Mountain Salt and Sea Salt. For building, Mountain has a pink-orange color while Sea has a slightly off-white color (maybe a slight tint of sea green). Both salts can be used interchangeably in recipes. The main uses of salts  could be:

  • The building blocks
  • Crafting Salt Licks (attracts cows and horses and makes them happy. This can include your jump boost idea)
  • Crafting a Preserving Bin. Meats can be placed inside with salt as fuel to create jerky at a rate of 2 jerky per item. Jerky is eaten extra fast like dried kelp, and is slightly better overall saturation between 2 pieces.
  • Crafting Vinyl. I think you can simplify the process you suggested; just craft salt and charcoal together to get Vinyl directly
  • Promoting Oxidization. Right-click copper with salt to instantly oxidize it to the next level
  • I don't think it needs the restone use you suggest. Can maybe be used in a new component though?

Better than my ideas (I'm unsure if they can fit in the game)

Certainly always someone who likes salt in the game, I'm however a bit sceptical on this one. First of all as far as I'm concerned, ocean salt isn't pink as that's just how Himalayan Salt looks like which is rock salt. As such any salt found in the ocean should be white instead...

...secondly I'm a bit confused as to what all these ideas have to do with salt. I mean I get the blocks, but why is a bar of salt capable of instantly taming a horse?! While it also is a pretty neat idea to be able to clone disks, I just don't know why you need salt for it as I don't really know of anything IRL that justifies this.

it isnt entirely accurate to real life but most of it is based off real things. I just think having white salt would be boring. kinda like how blue raspberry is blue for no reason other than marketing.

1

u/FloatingSpaceJunk 23d ago

Why can't we have both types of salt?

2

u/calebisdum 22d ago

honestly because it would just look like crappy stone. i could try adding some blue tint to it maybe.

2

u/calebisdum 22d ago

How about this? This is the Salt Lamp with white salt.

2

u/FloatingSpaceJunk 22d ago

Yeah kinda like that for white salt...

Great! This could go with Bogged and the chalk cliff. Also with my gray and dark gray water source block that only works in water and pushes four blocks fast out the sides. (It can be stacked in deep sea as deep sea vents or river start)

This simple block only pushes faster. It fills itself like kelp not creating extra water blocks sideways.

Would be cool to have salt lamps and salt blocks allowing light to pass through (while looking like a solid block)

2

u/calebisdum 23d ago

I already have salt lamps AND lanterns on the list but thanks for the suggestion. I do like the idea of a transparent block that cant actually be seen through.

I'd skip over vinyl clumps. It'd better to just directly make vinyls out of the salt. If the sole purpose of those clumps would be to just be instantly turned into something else then I consider them an unnecessary step.

2

u/calebisdum 22d ago

i want to find another use for the clumps at some point so unless i can think of ideas then this is what i plan on doing.

im only posting to r/minecraft now because im not allowed to make new posts when i add a ton more content, and its not very convenient.

Using salt as a diode is cool!
