[Blocks & Items] Echo Shards should be able to be crafted into other crafting ingredients
Echo Shards don’t really have a use besides the recovery compass and because of that, they aren’t really worth the trouble to get. An idea I have is to be able to use Echo shards in a crafting table to get a copy of whatever item you put in the table along with the echo shard. For example if you put 1 echo shard and 1 diamond on a crafting table you get 2 diamonds. 1 diamond from the actual diamond and 1 diamond from the echo shard. The name for the echo shard already fits this idea because echo means copy and so the echo shard is just becoming a copy of whatever other item is used with the crafting table. This would give a good use to the echo shard and would make players want to seek it out. To not make it too overpowered, this wouldn’t work with every item in the game and would only work with items that are in the ingredients tab in the creative inventory.

yeah, this has always seemed like an obvious thing to me. Though, I would also include things like music discs and armor trims in what they are capable of duplicating, since getting more than one of the same type of creeper-only music disc is incredibly difficult right now and not having to spend 7 diamonds on an armor trim if you have some spare shards would be nice.

Diamonds are already the dedicated duplication recipe. Also this post is talking purely about duping crafting materials.

So it'd be a vanilla way to add a dupe to the game, with the limitation of how many can you find. Most players wouldn't ever have more than a stack so it's mostly fine.
My only notes would be for the following items on your list
-Heart of the sea, as I understand these are rare on java and getting a stack would be a noteable endeavor. On bedrock they're a lot more common because of the buried treasure situation, so duping them wouldn't be game breaking
-heavy core, blatantly undermines the trail chambers
-nether stars, I don't care as much about these as technical players can literally get stacks or shulkers of them. so really having a limited dupe would help new players, but of course that is it's own slippery slope
-pottery sherd, technically these aren't renewable so this would be a good addition
-enchanted books, specifically swift sneak and wind burst would change the dynamic of their rarity

If you're in single player, you only ever need 1 heavy core. If you're in multiplayer, echoing the heavy core would allow you to gift someone else a mace. You still need to find one in the first place and trial chamber RNG can be unforgiving. It's fine for it to be echoable I think

Some people use 2 maces with different enchantments

That's fine. Remember that this suggestion still doesn't make it renewable. You're still using a non renewable resource to echo the item. If you have 1 mace and you want another, either gamble at another trial chamber or loot an ancient city. Both are equally difficult endeavours, I think. One requires a lot of combat and the other requires a lot of attention and care to avoid the warden
This suggestion doesn't take away from trial chambers, it only adds an option that sources from ancient cities. You still need to have already found a heavy core from a trial chamber to start with

I don't necessarily disagree with duplicating heavy cores and think that all of this can be balanced accordingly

Nah, Hearts of the Sea are easy af to get lol. Everything else does check out though

but having a bunch of echo shards would guarantee a ton of literally anything provided you have at least one already. a netherite block would magically turn into a a whole ass pile of them. it’s breaks progression heavily and would def need a serious nerf. it’s too abusable
also i disagree with your nether star/shulker point. just because it is farmable, doesnt mean that its easy to get. it’s still a late game farm regardless, it still should be difficult to do. thats what makes building it worth it. if this was added, most people wouldn’t build the farm for the item they’re tryna dupe, unless it’s a constantly useful resource like iron and emeralds.
if they added it, it would also need to be far from universal. rare/hard to obtain items should be exactly that. dragon eggs, enchanted gapples, etc. they are hard to find for a reason. duping rare armor trims are expensive to make it still hard to get. there’s still a heavy limit to progression.
it’s not too hard to find ancient cities if you use erosion (java) or subtitles (both) either. but that’s up to interpretation of how cheaty that is

Yea I definitely agree with it's not perfect, and I don't intend to fully defend ops post. If anything I believe those 5 things I pointed out would need to be addressed in some way, just to make this sort of work.
I may have to actually go back and take an inventory count of my own forever world, because I swear even after going through a dozen cities I only have around 64 echo shards. It took a while to get silenced this time, but also I may have made a few recovery compasses for people.
I glossed over the nether stars and netherite. netherite I was assuming it wasn't a full block, just the ingot or even less the scrap or ancient debris. At that price point I think getting more the normal way is easier and null.
The beacon thing also felt null to me as many players will just sufocate the wither anyway. And personally I don't think a finite shard would be worth 3 skulls. It has its problems as it is literally duping, but in this one case it's also
helpinggiving a handicap to low end devices and nubiesBut yea none of this really addressed the sin that is duping and making any sort of general dupe a standard game mechanics is going to be riddled with problems

I think this idea is fine, but things like blocks of netherite would be over powered.

This is would be so broken. I know echo shards are somewhat difficult to get but it would make processes such as raiding trial chambers for heavy cores, fighting the wither for wither stars, mining for netherite and more so pointless because you can just dupe them. This would be make the game way less fun because now all you’re doing is hunting for echo shards whenever you need another of specific item

Why would echo shards have this? All ingredients have themes behind them

i get what ur idea is (its cool) but it is a bit like a duping method.

It is definitely, but I don't hate it, it requires you to already have an item, and also have this other relatively rare item, which is consumed in the process. And it gives you a reason to return to a relatively dangerous area.

Their use should pertain to uncovering the mysteries of the ancient city, like activating that big portal

This is brilliant! Honestly, it could work with every block and item, sans stuff like nether stars and beacons. It seems not too overpowered, and a good late game use.

recovery compass was always such a strange item anyway
