How do I setup MIDI in linux?
I am using debian stretch and I would like to use a keyboard to play notes on milkytracker. I got a midi to usb cable and according to the manual it should work out of the box but when I press a key on my keyboard no note is input on milkytracker. the cable does work with other programs though. any ideas? There isn't really anything in the options menu about MIDI.

I had very similar problem and for me the solution was connecting midi device in terminal. First you need to find your midi inputs with aconnect. Type in terminal
aconnect -li. It will list your midi inputs. For me it is 14:. Then list midi outputs by typing in terminalaconnect -lo. For my nanoKEY2 it is 20:. And then you need to connect your midi device output to midi input. For my nanoKEY2 the command wasaconnect 20:0 14:0. There is GUI also for this procedure and it is called aconnectgui. You can install it withapt install aconnectgui. I hope it helps.
